Ohio State basketball loses one recruit, reaffirms offer to Bronny James

What do you think Buckeye Nation… Is Bronny James coming to Ohio State? #GoBucks

In a week that has been all about Ohio State football, the basketball team had some big things happening as well. Some of the news positive, some not so much. Let’s start with the negative first.

The No. 2 player in Ohio, George Washington III, decommitted from the Buckeyes earlier this week. Washington was one of the first in the 2023 class to commit to coach Chris Holtmann doing so way back in November of 2021. The four-star prospect is originally from Louisville, Kentucky but currently resides in Dayton.

The change of heart for Washington seemed to come after Ohio State hosted LeBron James and his son Bronny James this past weekend during the Notre Dame game.  The coaching staff reaffirmed the scholarship offer to James and by all accounts, Bronny enjoyed his time in Columbus.

LeBron’s love for all things Buckeyes is no secret. Will King James help sway his firstborn to the scarlet and gray? My gut says the elder James will allow his son to carve his own path and make his own choices, but it can’t hurt that dad is such a die-hard OSU fan.

James is listed as the No. 10 combo guard and No. 41 overall player in the country according to 247Sports composite rankings. Ohio State currently sits with the No. 9 recruiting class for 2022, even with losing Washington’s commitment. Adding Bronny James would only move the Buckeyes up in the rankings adding to what is an already strong class.

Bronny James shared an in-uniform look from his visit at Ohio State and fans loved it

Bronny James is growing up.

Bronny James has basically grown up in front of the basketball-watching world, so in that sense, it’s remarkable that he’s developed into a legitimate Division I prospect under such an intense microscope. And now, Bronny is just starting to take in all the experiences that come with being a D-I prospect.

That, of course, includes taking a campus visit.

Bronny was in Columbus this past weekend for his Ohio State visit and watched the Buckeyes’ 21-10 win over Notre Dame from the sidelines with LeBron. That visit continued into the week, and on Tuesday, we got a first glimpse at what Bronny would look like in an Ohio State uniform.

As expected, not much about Bronny’s recruitment has been conventional. Despite being ranked 41st in the Class of 2023 by 247Sports, Bronny did not have much progress in his recruitment until recently. Coaches had all but assumed that LeBron’s son would be more inclined to joining the G League Ignite (or other professional options) and try to make the leap into the NBA as soon as he’s eligible. But as Bronny leans more towards the collegiate route, Nike/Jordan Brand-sponsored programs like Ohio State, Oregon, Memphis, UCLA and Michigan have expressed interest.

Oregon and Ohio State seem to be the most likely destinations, but much can change in the recruiting game. His visit to Ohio State had the crowd at Ohio State chanting, “We want Bronny.”

That’s always fun. LeBron had said in the past that he likely would have attended Ohio State if the one-and-done rule was in place during his high school days. So, the visit to Ohio State was extra special for both of them.

Tuesday’s look at Bronny in a Buckeyes uniform also had basketball fans excited about the possibility of Bronny playing college ball.

Weekend Rewind: Ohio State crowd chants they want Bronny James during Notre Dame game

The Buckeyes faithful made it clear: They want Bronny James.

The most-hyped college football game of the past week took place in Columbus, where Ohio State hosted Notre Dame. Thanks to a dominant defensive effort, the Buckeyes beat the Fighting Irish, 21-10.

As expected, it was an electric atmosphere at Ohio Stadium and plenty of sports celebrities were in attendance. Some of the famous alums on the sidelines during pregame included Jayson Tatum, Ezekiel Elliott and a half-dozen other NFL players.

The biggest name belonged to Akron native LeBron James, who is entering his 20th year in the NBA and fifth with the Lakers. While LeBron went straight from high school to the NBA, he’s adopted Ohio State as his favorite college football team. And as James schmoozed with potential recruits for the Buckeyes, his son Bronny got recognized by the crowd – which started a “We want Bronny” chant.

A four-star recruit, Bronny (6-foot-3, 190 pounds) is one of the most highly-sought combo guards in the country entering his senior season at Sierra Canyon (Calif.). He is ranked No. 10 at his position and No. 41 overall in the class of 2023, according to 247Sports.

LeBron disputed a recent rumor that he’d decided on Oregon. Bronny has not made an official visit yet and no offers have been reported.

‘We want Bronny!’: Ohio State fans cheer Bronny James at the Shoe

LeBron and Bronny James were among those in attendance on Saturday as No. 2 Ohio State defeated No. 5 Notre Dame.

LeBron and Bronny James were among those in attendance on Saturday as the No. 2 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the No. 5 Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Ohio Stadium.

The game featured several notable athletes, including Boston Celtics guard Jayson Tatum, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Dallas Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott. The group witnessed a 21-10 win by the home team to open the season.

Throughout the game, fans showered the Jameses in cheers. They even broke out in a “We want Bronny!” chant. The game served as the first visit to Ohio State for Bronny, who is a senior this year at Sierra Canyon High School in California.

Bronny, a four-star prospect in the class of 2023, has not publicly stated his intentions after high school, but he is apparently leaning toward attending college. His mother, Savannah, recently said in an interview that he wants to go the college route.

He has garnered plenty of interest from several collegiate programs, including Ohio State. He reportedly spent about four hours visiting the school before the football game and participated in a photoshoot and watched practice.

Bronny, who is listed at 6 feet, 4 inches, recently turned in a strong summer of performances in events across the country and in France with the California Basketball Club. The showing prompted ESPN to bump his class ranking up from No. 40 to No. 35 in its latest update.

The appearance was his first known official or unofficial college visit.

LeBron James and his two sons make the cover of Sports Illustrated

LeBron James and his sons Bronny and Bryce are gracing the cover of the latest edition of Sports Illustrated.

Like father, like son.

Over the past two decades, LeBron James has become something of a fixture on the cover of Sports Illustrated, as he has appeared there dozens of times.

The first time the sports publication featured him there was in February 2002, when he was just a junior at St. Vincent–St. Mary High School in his native Akron, Ohio.

But now, it has become a family affair.

Not only has he made the latest cover of Sports Illustrated, but he has been featured there along with his sons, Bronny and Bryce.

LeBron James reacted with excitement on social media once the cover was made public.

Bronny James is going into his senior year of high school at Sierra Canyon School in the San Fernando Valley and is starting to attract interest from college basketball programs. Bryce James, meanwhile, plays at the same school and is entering his sophomore year of high school.

LeBron James says Bronny is leaning toward going to college

Bronny James appears to be solidifying his decision to play college basketball after high school.

LeBron and Savannah James said in a recent interview with Chris Ballard of Sports Illustrated that their oldest son, Bronny, is leaning toward going to college after graduating high school next year.

Bronny, a four-star prospect in the class of 2023, has not publicly stated his intentions after high school, but he seemingly has several options to consider. He can opt to turn pro by signing with the NBA G League, Overtime Elite or another league, or he can spend time in college.

LeBron recently cleared the air by stating Bronny hasn’t taken any visits and has had only a few calls with coaches. However, he has reportedly garnered plenty of interest from Memphis, Ohio State, Oregon and USC among others.

While Bronny has not yet taken an official visit, the collegiate route is looking increasingly possible for him. His mother believes it is the path that he wants to take.

“(Bronny) wants to have a collegiate career,” Savannah said. “I think it would be really cool for him to start with collegiate basketball, just to start his legacy there.”

LeBron agreed that Bronny “wants to go the college route.”

Now a senior, Bronny figures to continue to fluctuate in various rankings ahead of his final season with Sierra Canyon. He will certainly pick up more scholarship offers throughout the season as it is looking more certain that he will soon be in the collegiate ranks.

Despite being one of the league’s elder statesman, there doesn’t appear to be any slowing down for LeBron James anytime soon.  LeBron has repeatedly voiced his desire to play with his older son, Bronny, but now James is voicing his desire to play alongside younger son Bryce as well. “I like to throw things out in the airwaves, but I’m not one to [say] what’s going to happen in the next two to three years,” LeBron told Sports Illustrated. “I am a visionary, but I’m also a guy that lives in the moment. I’d definitely be looking at who got first-round picks in 2024, 2025, things of that nature; 2026, ’27. I pay attention to that type of stuff.”

More on this storyline

When asked specifically if he could see himself playing not just with Bronny, but also with Bryce, James made it clear that it’s something he’s thought about—depending on how his body and mind feel. “I feel like I could play for quite a while. So it’s all up to the body, but more importantly, my mind,” LeBron told SI. “If my mind can stay sharp and fresh and motivated, then the sky’s not even the limit for me. I can go beyond that. But we shall see.” -via Sports Illustrated / August 30, 2022

LeBron James brings back Sports Illustrated’s ‘Chosen One’ cover with Bronny and Bryce and it’s fantastic

The Chosen Sons.

Many fans were first introduced to LeBron James when he appeared on the cover of Sports Illustrated when he was a junior in high school.

On the cover read the words “The Chosen One” next to a photo of him in his basketball jersey for St. Vincent-St. Mary in Ohio.

Now, twenty years later, history is repeating itself. James once again appears on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week, wearing a t-shirt with a print of that original issue. But this time around, James is photographed by Jeffrey A. Salter alongside his sons, Bronny and Bryce.

The tagline for this cover story by Chris Ballard reads “The Chosen Sons.”

Bronny and Bryce, who returned to school at Sierra Canyon in California this week, are both making names for themselves in the basketball world.

Bronny recently rose on ESPN’s recruiting rankings. He is expected to go the collegiate route after high school, rather than the G League, and he reportedly received an offer from Memphis. Oregon is considered a favorite to land his commitment.

Bryce recently picked up his first D-I offer letter, earning the opportunity from Duquesne. His family has a long history with the coaching staff at that school that dates back to before when LeBron was in high school.

Bronny James moves up in ESPN’s latest recruiting rankings and has ‘NBA potential’ at point guard

Bronny James is starting to make a name for himself.

Welcome to Layup Lines, our daily NBA newsletter where we’ll prep you for a tip-off of tonight’s action, from what to watch to bets to make. Subscribe here to get it delivered to your inbox every afternoon.

Bronny James is starting to make a name for himself in basketball.

After picking up an offer from Memphis, his collegiate recruiting process is officially underway. James, who just started his senior year at Sierra Canyon in California, is expected to play in the NCAA after completing high school. Oregon is one of the favorites to land his commitment. He is expected to take a visit to Ohio State.

James was ranked as ESPN’s No. 40 overall recruit in the Class of 2023, but he moved up to No. 35 in their latest update on Monday. Read how one high-major coach evaluated Bronny’s game:

“I think Bronny has some NBA potential as a backup point guard. I would like to see him settle into college and continue to grow more comfortable finding his own offense, but he’s a good, smart player.”

I’ve seen Bronny play in person and I was most impressed by his defense. Based on what I’ve seen, his spot in the Top 40 feels reasonable. It’s not too high or inflated because he is LeBron’s son, and it’s well-earned based on his own accomplishments.

The Tip-Off

Troy Taormina-USA TODAY Sports

Some NBA goodness from around the USA TODAY Sports network.

Rockets Wire editor Ben DuBose mused on whether or not Donovan Mitchell makes sense as a potential trade target for Houston:

“The Houston Rockets are under a year away from when they will likely be active in pursuing veteran additions, thanks to a large amount of salary cap room and the knowledge that future draft-pick obligations to Oklahoma City kick back in with the 2023-24 season.

So, for the right deal — and specifically, if All-Star guard Donovan Mitchell is up for grabs — might the Rockets and third-year general manager Rafael Stone expedite that timetable?

It wouldn’t be an easy decision, since the upcoming 2022-23 season is the last one until 2026-27 in which Houston will fully control its own draft pick. Bringing in a proven player like Mitchell would inherently make the Rockets more likely to win games, which could worsen their draft outlook and lottery odds to potentially land a top prospect like Victor Wembanyama or Scoot Henderson.”

I hadn’t considered the Rockets as a destination for Mitchell, but they have the assets to get the deal done if they wanted to pair him with Jalen Green and Jabari Smith.
