What Colts’ hiring of Shane Steichen would mean for the Panthers

With the Colts reportedly zeroing in Shane Steichen, the Panthers’ search for an offensive coordinator will likely take a hit.

The Carolina Panthers ultimately didn’t want Shane Steichen as their next head coach. But it looks like there is a team who does, and it should affect their next move.

On Sunday morning, just hours before kickoff of Super Bowl LVII, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported that the Indianapolis Colts have “targeted” Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Shane Steichen for their head-coaching job. Schefter also noted that the other candidates for the position have been informed that they’re “moving in a different direction.”

Even though the Panthers moved in a different direction from Steichen, such a hire would still affect their staff. Because if the Colts do indeed have their man, one of Carolina’s apparent favorites for their offensive coordinator opening probably won’t be going anywhere.

And that favorite is Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson, who will presumably step up into the vacancy soon to be left behind by Steichen. Johnson, who was in the mix for former interim head coach Steve Wilks’ prospective personnel as well as Frank Reich’s, was also set to speak with the Baltimore Ravens for their offensive coordinator job.

But since it’s likely Johnson sticks around for a promotion in Philly, where does that leave the Panthers’ search?

For now, the field could consist of three men—Duce Staley, who was hired by Carolina two weeks ago, Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter and Los Angeles Rams assistant head coach and tight ends coach Thomas Brown. Staley is already an “in-house” candidate, Cooter has been deemed a “name to watch” and Brown is scheduled to meet with the Panthers for a second time on Thursday.

So, yes, the search will go on without one of the hottest commodities in the league.

Updated list of OC candidates the Eagles could target with Shane Steichen heading to the Colts

Here is an updated look at 10 offensive coordinator candidates the Philadelphia Eagles could target with Shane Steichen likely to accept the Colts’ head coaching job

Nick Sirianni now appears just days away from officially having his own coaching tree and with the expectation that Shane Steichen (Colts) and Jonathan Gannon (Cardinals) will land jobs, we’re taking an early look at potential replacements.

Sirianni rightfully gets a lot of credit for the Eagles’ success.

Philadelphia’s second-year head coach has far exceeded expectations and proven that he was the perfect target for the role. However, it’s important to remember that Steichen had a massive role in the offense.

Sirianni described this last summer how involved Steichen is with everything the Eagles have done offensively. He started calling plays late in the 2021 season, playing a pivotal role in the Birds’ offense taking off. It’s a change that carried over into 2022 with Philly boasting one of the top offenses all season.

Interest in Steichen will go beyond his work in Philadelphia. He served as the Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator in 2020, working alongside Justin Herbert in a record-setting rookie season.

Combine his work with Herbert and Jalen Hurts, and that’s a future NFL head coach.

Here’s an updated list of potential candidates with Steichen set to take his talents to the AFC.

Ravens to interview Eagles’ QB Brian Johnson for vacant offensive coordinator job

Baltimore Ravens to interview Philadelphia Eagles quarterback coach Brian Johnson for vacant offensive coordinator job after the #SuperBowl

The Eagles’ two top assistant coaches could be on the move and Jalen Hurts’ most trusted confidant could be leaving as well.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler is reporting that the Ravens are requesting permission to interview Philadelphia’s quarterback coach, Brian Johnson for their vacant offensive coordinator job.

Johnson is a Hurts’ family friend, and the former Utah star quarterback has over 13 years of experience as a play-caller and position coach — helping develop two of the NFL’s best quarterbacks: the Eagles’ Jalen Hurts and Dallas Cowboys star Dak Prescott.

Hurts emerged as an All-Pro and league Most Valuable Player front-runner in his second year working with Johnson, while Prescott, a three-star recruit in high school, earned All-SEC honors at Mississippi State in his final two years.

Panthers waiting on Super Bowl LVII to fill their OC position?

Even with the Panthers coaching staff beginning to fill out, the offensive coordinator job remains vacant. So they may be waiting on a certain QB coach to finish up at Super Bowl LVII.

On Friday night, the Carolina Panthers hired Josh McCown as their new quarterbacks coach. But, uh, why are they hiring a quarterbacks coach when they don’t even have an offensive coordinator yet?

Well, that’s because they’re probably waiting for the season to be officially over with.

While gauging Carolina’s growing coaching staff in a new report from Saturday, Joe Person of The Athletic noted that the Panthers—along with a few other teams—could be waiting on Super Bowl LVII to make their next personnel move. Person, who also suggests that Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson could be the top pick for Carolina head coach Frank Reich, writes:

Many in league circles believe Philadelphia offensive coordinator Shane Steichen, who interviewed for the Panthers’ head-coaching vacancy, will be the Colts’ next coach. If that happens, Eagles coach Nick Sirianni likely will promote Johnson to offensive coordinator.

Johnson’s work with Jalen Hurts makes him attractive to a team like the Panthers, who may finally draft a top-10 quarterback this year. But if Eagles defensive coordinator Jonathan Gannon gets the Cardinals’ job, he almost certainly would try to take Johnson with him to coach Kyler Murray.

Johnson, a reported target of former interim head coach Steve Wilks as well, helped push Hurts to an MVP-caliber campaign in the NFL’s third-best total offense. So he should, obviously, have quite a few opportunities ahead of him.

But what if the opportunity he chooses isn’t in Charlotte?

Person added that Jacksonville Jaguars passing game coordinator Jim Bob Cooter, who interviewed with the team this past week, may be the next name in line.

May the dominoes soon begin to fall . . .

Notre Dame offensive coordinator search: Cross one off list

A week later, who do you want as ND’s next OC?

You can cross one name off the list of potential Notre Dame offensive coordinators. On Wednesday we spent a lot of time putting together biographies on a few of the individuals [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and Ron Powlus were reportedly targeting.

We’re glad we put out that information about Philadelphia Eagles quarterbacks coach Brian Johnson when we did, because he will not be coming to Notre Dame, regardless of what someone decides to put on Twitter.

Johnson was asked Wednesday about being linked to the Notre Dame job. He couldn’t have been any clearer about his lack of interest in the job.

It’s hardly a surprise. Johnson is likely to get an NFL offensive coordinator position after the Super Bowl this weekend. Don’t fret though, Irish fans, plenty of quality candidates remain — specifically Andy Ludwig of Utah and Sean Lewis of Colorado!

Notre Dame offensive coordinator search: Report on vetted candidates

Is Notre Dame comin’ for Coach Prime’s new offensive coordinator? Are they in a battle with Miami for an offensive mind? Tons of details on the search…

The question surrounding Notre Dame football this offseason went from “how will the offense look with an elite quarterback?” to “who is going to call plays for this offense?” in no time.

[autotag]Tommy Rees[/autotag] took an offer to be the offensive coordinator at Alabama last week, and, according to Football Scoop, [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] and Notre Dame have targeted some of the biggest-names among position coaches in the NFL and offensive play-callers in college.

Here is an update on who Notre Dame has reached out to and where things seemingly stand on each candidate according to the Football Scoop report.

Ravens reportedly scheduling second interview with Broncos OC Justin Outten

Mike Garafolo reports the Baltimore Ravens are scheduling a second interview with Denver Broncos’ OC Justin Outten

With the Baltimore Ravens looking for a new offensive coordinator to take over for Greg Roman, the list of candidates keep increasing.  It’s not surprising that the team is searching and looking at all teams, and are being thorough in their search.  With that said, some candidates are being scheduled to interview for a second time as the hiring process continues.

It is being reported by Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network that the Ravens have scheduled a second interview with Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Justin Outten.  To go along with Outten, second interviews are being held with Dave Canales and Todd Monken as well.

With the news of a second interview for Justin Outten, it adds onto a list of qualified candidates who will get another opportunity to figure out of a fit between them and Baltimore is right. The Ravens have a big offseason ahead, and finding the right option at offensive coordinator is one of the top questions still surrounding the team.

4 possible OC candidates for Frank Reich’s Panthers

Are you tired of playing Charlie Kelly and trying to connect all of the offensive coordinator dots to Frank Reich? Then we got you covered, Panthers fans.

After Thursday’s hiring of Frank Reich, mum currently seems to be the word on the rest of the Carolina Panthers’ coaching staff. And that includes the offensive coordinator position, which may or may not belong to 2022’s play caller Ben McAdoo at this point.

So, who could fill the spot if the team opts for an overhaul? Here are four possible candidates, all with some sort of link to Reich, for the job.

Report: Brian Johnson, Marcus Brady and Mike LaFleur in running for Rams OC job

Three coaches are reportedly in the mix for the Rams’ offensive coordinator position

For the second time in three years, Liam Coen opted to leave the Los Angeles Rams to return to Kentucky as the Wildcats’ offensive coordinator. As a result, Sean McVay is searching for a new offensive coordinator to join his staff, and he’s reportedly set his sights on three candidates.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, former Jets OC Mike LaFleur is the likeliest person for the job and it was reported weeks ago that he’s expected to join McVay’s staff in Los Angeles.

However, Breer reported that the Rams also interviewed Eagles QBs coach Brian Johnson and former Colts OC Marcus Brady for the position.

Of the 10 OC openings, I think the Rams could fill their job first. We mentioned Jets OC Mike LaFleur for the position, one that Liam Coen vacated (to return to Kentucky) at season’s end a couple of weeks ago. And my sense is that’s still the direction this is going in, with much of the process already completed—Sean McVay’s already interviewed Eagles QBs coach Brian Johnson and former Colts OC Marcus Brady for the position, too.

Johnson has been the Eagles’ quarterbacks coach since 2021, which was his first job in the NFL. Previously, he had stints as the offensive coordinator at Florida, Houston and Utah, and he also coached the quarterbacks at all three schools, along with Mississippi State.

Brady is also on the Eagles’ staff as an offensive consultant after spending five years with the Colts coaching the quarterbacks and eventually as the OC in 2021-2022. He was fired by Indianapolis in November but was hired by the Eagles three weeks later.
