The Bruins +1.5 (-230) would cost more than two times your potential return, and that’s just too risky for not much reward if you would like some insurance. Just play Boston straight up if you like them. I don’t, though.

Raanta returned to the lineup after being knocked out of Game 2, and while he allowed 4 goals on 27 shots, he played well. There was also a controversial situation in the second period where goalie interference appeared to have occurred. Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-145) is the lean here. Eventually we’re going to get a defensive game in this series, and one with very tight checking, low scoring and perhaps even a trip to overtime. But so far the Over is 3-0-1 in four games, so until we get an Under, keep going for at least 6 goals per outing.

Against the spread

The Bruins +1.5 (-300) will cost you three times your potential return if you’d like a little insurance. If you like Boston to win and even this series, just take them straight up. You shouldn’t like that, though. Carolina is going to win.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-102) bettors took it in the shorts in the final moments of Game 1, as the Hurricanes led 4-1 and the Bruins pulled their goalie. Yeah, you know how that one ended. Kuemper won his fourth consecutive start with 29 saves on 32 shots in a 5-3 win at Buffalo Saturday. The Avalanche are now 18-0-2 across his past 20 starts, with Kuemper’s last win in regulation coming Nov. 26 in Dallas.

Swayman turned aside 29 of the 31 shots he faced in Ottawa Saturday, and he is now 2-1-1 with a 1.46 GAA and .950 SV% with one shutout in four outings in the month of February.

Money line

Not only is the AVALANCHE (-170) a perfect 7-0 in the previous seven road outings, but they have had a firm grasp of this series in recent seasons, too. In fact, it’s rather amazing, but the Avs are 11-1 in the past 12 trips to Boston, while the Bruins (+135) are just 1-7 in the previous eight meetings overall.

Against the spread

The AVALANCHE -1.5 (+133) are a little better of a value on the puck line rather than straight up, where they’ll cost you nearly two times your potential return. The first two wins on the road trip have been by two or more goals, and each of the past seven wins on the road have been by multiple scores.

Over/Under

OVER 5.5 (-140) is a little expensive for my liking, and with two solid goaltenders in net, it won’t be going over much. In fact, it might come down to a late empty-net goal to push this across the finish line. Still, the Over is 6-2 in the past eight at home for the B’s, and 4-1-1 in the past six as an underdog. The Over is the lean here.

OVER 5.5 (-122) is the lean here, but play this lightly. Playing the Over is bucking the trends in this series, as the Under has hit in four of the past five in Boston, and seven of the previous eight meetings overall. Tuukka Rask (26-8-6, 2.12 GAA, .929 SV%) at Mackenzie Blackwood (22-14-8, 2.77 GAA, .915 SV%)

Rask had another fabulous season in 2019-20, splitting the duties with Jaroslav Halak. It’s a system that has worked really well for bench boss Bruce Cassidy. Rask’s 2.12 GAA was his lowest since he turned in a 2.04 GAA during the 2013-14 season. He has also won 26 or more games in seven consecutive NHL campaigns. Rask faced New Jersey twice last season, going 2-0-0 with a 0.50 GAA, .982 SV% and one shutout.

Blackwood was impressive in his first full season as the New Jersey backstop, and it’s uncertain where they would have been without him. He went 10-8-7 with a 2.76 GAA and .910 SV% with two shutouts in 25 appearances at home last season. He picked up one win with one loss in two outings against the B’s, allowing five goals on 28 shots in a loss at home Nov. 19, 2019.

Money line (ML)

The BRUINS (-175) are just about at my limit for a straight money line wager, as I tend to never go any higher than -175 or -180. They’re a good play at this price level in the opener, even though it’s a tad risky playing a road team at such a high price.

Against the spread (ATS)

The BRUINS -1.5 (+155) are a tempting play on the road, but Blackwood will certainly make them work for it. He is the best backstop the team has had since Martin Brodeur left, and he will win games that Cory Schneider and other goaltenders in recent years have let slip away.

Still, the B’s will do enough to scratch out a road win by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 5.5 (-105) is the play here, although long-term Boston’s defense is a bit worrisome. They lost Torey Krug to the St. Louis Blues, and Zdeno Chara to the Washington Capitals, so we’ll find out early if Charlie McAvoy can handle being the No. 1 guy. That’s the biggest concern betting the Under in this one, and we’ll likely find out early if it is going to be a good night.
