Bobby Wagner adds another point for Hall of Fame case

Bobby Wagner adds another point for Hall of Fame case

One of the least shocking statement anyone can utter these days is this: Seattle Seahawks linebacker Bobby Wagner is a first ballot Hall of Famer. It is beyond evident how obvious it is Wagner is destined for Canton one day, as he has forged one of the single greatest careers a linebacker has ever had in this league.

But when you step back and truly think about his accomplishments, they are simply stunning. Of course, legends don’t achieve legend status without innumerous accolades. One more Wagner can add to his resume is the number of times he has been named an All Pro. See for yourself how No. 54 stacks up:

Ray Lewis and Lawrence Taylor are certainly good company to keep when it comes to how you stack up in the grand scheme of NFL history.

Wagner has stated he plans to play football in 2024. Considering he led the entire league in total tackles, this should not come as a surprise to anyone. The 10-time All Pro has plenty of gas left in the tank.

His current contract in Seattle was only for one year. Hopefully, the Seahawks will see the value he still brings and ensure Wagner’s 2024 is not spent in another city.

23 Seattle Seahawks players who will become free agents in March

Reviewing 23 pending free agents for the Seattle Seahawks in 2024.

The Seattle Seahawks have entered their offseason a little earlier than we were hoping. Getting back to the postseason next year will require a lot of work, beginning with deciding which pending free agents to keep and which to let walk. This year the team has 23 players who will hit the open market in a couple of months unless they are re-signed before them.

At the top of the list is star defensive end Leonard Williams, who the team traded two draft picks before just before the trade deadline. If they let Williams leave they’ll get a high compensatory pick. However, Williams has been their best defender this season since the deal went down and they’d be wise to retain him. Other key free agents include their top-three off-ball linebackers, Bobby Wagner, Jordyn Brooks and Devin Bush.

Here is the full list of pending free agents for the Seahawks in 2024.

Here are the full top-20 graded players for Seattle this season by PFF.

The Seahawks’ 2023 season is over. Now’s a good time to evaluate how they did across the board. According to the Pro Football Focus grades, rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon and running back Ken Walker posted the highest grades on the team this season. Starting quarterback Geno Smith finished third, followed by linebacker Bobby Wagner.

Watch: What Bobby Wagner, other Seahawks had to say after Week 18 win

Here’s what head coach Pete Carroll, Bobby Wagner, Quandre Diggs, Geno Smith and a few other players had to say after the game.

The Seahawks’ 2023 season came to an end yesterday. One could blame the Bears’ total inability to beat the Packers, but the truth is that they made their own bed, as DK Metcalf told reporters earlier this week. At the end of their last game of the year, we heard more players and coaches taking accountability for how their season ended.

Here’s what head coach Pete Carroll, Bobby Wagner, Quandre Diggs, Geno Smith and a few other players had to say after the game.

4 takeaways from Seattle’s 21-20 win over Arizona

4 takeaways from Seattle’s 21-20 win over Arizona

For a second consecutive season, the Seattle Seahawks have finished the season 9-8 thanks to a dramatic win over a division rival in regular season finale. In many ways, the 2022 and 2023 campaigns are near-perfect carbon copies of one another, even coming down to how they ended the regular season. Last year, the Seahawks needed a game-winning field goal in overtime to beat the Rams. This time, Seattle needed a potential game-winning field goal to miss.

Unfortunately, the one difference here is the fact there was no miracle upset at Lambeau Field. The Packers did something they were incapable of doing for the last three consecutive seasons: win a must-win game at home. Thus, the Seahawks are eliminated, but ended the year with a winning record.

This takeaways piece will cover aspects of the game, but at this point, what else is there to say? The Seahawks were gashed on the ground to the tune of 206 rushing yards, were outgained in total yards 466-327, lost the time of possession battle 36:03 to 23:57, but somehow made enough plays at the end to win. This sums up most of Seattle’s games from the last two years.

Here are the top takeaways from the Seahawks’ 21-20 win:

Vets react to young Seahawks smoking cigars in locker room at season’s end

The Seahawks’ season has been over for about an hour and we already have our first controversy to tweet through.

The Seahawks’ season has been over for about an hour and we already have our first controversy to tweet through.

Observe the reaction of former Seattle punter Jon Ryan to several defensive backs smoking in the locker room following their one-point win over the Cardinals – which wasn’t enough to get them in the playoffs.

Shaking with anger seems a bit of an extreme reaction – even a bit of old man yelling out cloud energy coming from a guy who seemed pretty cool when he was playing.

In any case, some Seahawks players who are still on the team are being more understanding, although still not happy with it. Free safety Quandre Diggs says he gets the celebrating but that veterans expect more.

Bobby Wagner sounded a similar note, attributing it to youth.

Anyway, the new season of True Detective with Jodie Foster starts next Sunday about this time, and it’s supposed to be really good.

Watch: Devon Witherspoon talks about making Pro Bowl as a rookie

Easily the favorite for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, the former Illinois standout has another accolade to add to his growing resume: Pro Bowler.

The Seattle Seahawks appear to have found another young star in their growing secondary. Cornerback Devon Witherspoon, the No. 5 overall pick from the 2023 NFL draft, has turned plenty of heads since he stepped on the field.

Originally questioned by some who felt the Seahawks should have taken a defensive lineman, Witherspoon has won over any doubters with his remarkable play this year. Easily the favorite for the Defensive Rookie of the Year award, the former Illinois standout has another accolade to add to his growing resume: Pro Bowler.

As one of the three Seahawks named to the Pro Bowl, alongside Bobby Wagner and Julian Love, the rookie took time to explain how he found out:

The Pro Bowl may not be what it once was, but to be named to the series of events is still an incredible accomplishment. It is a sign of respect from fans, fellow players, and those around the league about the high level of play from said player.

Well done, Spoon!

Pete Carroll: Seahawks would love to have Bobby Wagner back next year

Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward.

Whether they get eliminated on Sunday or get bounced from the Wild Card round again, the Seahawks’ 2023 season is going to be ending soon. When it’s over the front office will be facing some difficult decisions as they try to navigate this on-the-fly rebuild in the wake of the Russell Wilson era.

One of them will be what to do with beloved middle linebacker Bobby Wagner, who returned to Seattle this season after one year with the Rams. Wagner’s presence improved the team’s run defense a great deal early in the season – but the group has since regressed and is now even worse than they were last year.

While Wagner is still a valuable defender, it might make more sense for the Seahawks to get younger (and cheaper) at linebacker and shift more resources towards their defensive line. Then again, this team seems to relish building their defense from back to front and head coach Pete Carroll says they would love to have Wagner back next year.

As impressive as Wagner’s career has been – he just made his ninth Pro Bowl team – smart opponents have pegged him as a liability in coverage. While that’s true of about 85% of the off-ball linebackers around the league, it doesn’t make it any easier for Seattle’s defense, which simply can’t seem to get off the field on third down – where Wagner is most vulnerable.

Now 33 years old, Wagner is still playing his position at a relatively high level – and odds are whoever they’d replace him with would be a step down. Sometimes you have to take a step back in order to move forward, though.

Best and worst PFF grades for Seattle from loss to Pittsburgh

The Seahawks lost to the Steelers because they couldn’t tackle – especially on the back end of their defense.

The Seahawks lost to the Steelers because they couldn’t tackle – especially on the back end of their defense. While Devon Witherspoon made one impressive TFL in the third quarter, otherwise he was completely hapless trying to bring down any ball-carriers for Pittsburgh. The same case was true for practically everybody else on Seattle’s secondary. Pro Football Focus agrees, giving them all gruesome grades as tacklers this week.

On the other side of the ball, the biggest issue was bad pass protection. While Geno Smith was able to mitigate the worst of it with a great game, all that pressure kept a low lid on what the offense was able to do. As is appropriate, PFF gave exceptionally poor pass blocking grades to the Seahawks offensive line, especially their offensive tackles.

Here are the top and bottom five performers on both sides of the ball this week, according to PFF’s grades.
