Chargers defender named ‘hidden gem’

Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox named every team’s hidden gem at the quarter mark of the season.

The Chargers have a few players who have made their presence felt up to this point of the season.

All the while, some have played well, yet they’ve still gone under the radar.

One is edge defender Bud Dupree, who Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox recognized as Los Angeles’ biggest hidden gem.

While Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa remain the stars of L.A.’s pass rush when healthy—Bosa missed Week 4 with a hip injury—Dupree has flashed as a rotational sack artist. He recorded a pair of quarterback takedowns in Week 4, has logged three quarterback pressures and has made two tackles for loss. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see Dupree get more opportunities moving forward after playing just 56 percent of the defensive snaps over the first month.

Dupree had a big game right before the bye week, as he notched two sacks against the Chiefs. The veteran has taken advantage of his extensive playing time while Joey Bosa has been sidelined with a hip injury.

Through four games, Dupree has eight quarterback pressures, five run stops and four hurries.

If Bosa continues to be hindered by his injury, it will only lead to more playing time for the 31-year-old Dupree.

NFL analysts suggests the Vikings replace starting cornerback

Should the Minnesota Vikings be looking towards the NFL’s trade market to find an improvement over starting cornerback Byron Murphy?

The Minnesota Vikings’ defense has once again been one of the big storylines in the NFL. Last season, the defense was the only thing keeping the Vikings afloat at times. This season, they’re getting much more help from their offense but have still put together a scheme that has given opposing quarterbacks fits.

The defense has been a driving force in the Vikings’ undefeated start, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t areas that can be improvedBleacher Report NFL analyst Matt Holder suggests one of those improvements could be at the cornerback position.

Byron Murphy has been one of the Vikings’ starting cornerbacks all season, but he’s also been a weak spot in the Vikings’ defense. Murphy has given up completions on more than 70% of the passes he’s been targeted and has allowed the opposing quarterback to achieve a passer rating over 117 when targeting him, according to the charting from PFF. Murphy has also missed several tackles this season, putting the defense in tough spots.

Those numbers have Holder suggesting the Vikings reach out to the Buffalo Bills and work out a trade for their former first-round cornerback, Kaiir Elam. Elam hasn’t been a factor during his three seasons with the Bills, but Holder argues that’s because he’s been overtaken on the depth chart by a good corner in his own right, Christian Benford.

Given the lack of playing time Elam has seen in Buffalo, it may not take much to pry him away from the Bills. That would be necessary for the Vikings, as they don’t have much draft capital to offer up in any potential trade. Still, it may be worth reaching out and getting a price check on the former first-rounder to see if he could be had and at least compete with Murphy for a starting spot.

Klint Kubiak listed as one of the most impactful coordinators of 2024

Klint Kubiak was the Saints’ biggest offseason acquisition, and he’s delivered on those expectations. He needs to keep it up:

Klint Kubiak was without a doubt Dennis Allen’s biggest offseason acquisition for the New Orleans Saints. This was the belief before the season started, and he’s showing why many were excited about the hire. Bleacher Report has Kubiak as one of the most impactful coordinators through three weeks.

The Saints offense looks nothing like last year’s unit both conceptually and production-wise. The most impressive part of the transformation is the skill positions are the same guys. It’s still all Chris Olave and Rashid Shaheed at wide receiver. But Alvin Kamara has looked rejuvenated, and Derek Carr  has looked much-improved.

Taliese Fuaga and Lucas Patrick are the only true additions, but it’s a clear difference. Keeping it at the offensive line, Trevor Penning has played better after moving to right tackle. The offensive line as a whole performed much better than expected in the first two weeks before Erik McCoy went down in Week 3.

The Saints ranked second in points per game under this new system. The team has been using creative formations and motion frequently. Carr is taking advantage of the higher use of play action. Kamara is on pace to break last year’s rushing total by Week 8. If your offense is primarily the same but it looks and performs different, then the most logical place to look is the offensive coordinator. Kubiak has delivered on high expectations early on,  but he needs to keep it up through a long season.

Taliese Fuaga crowned as the NFL’s best rookie through two weeks

Taliese Fuaga went against Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence in Week 2. His performance earned him the top spot in B/R’s rookie rankings

New Orleans Saints offensive tackle Taliese Fuaga now sits at the top of Bleacher Report’s rookie rankings after being at second place a week ago behind Xavier Worthy. He earns this distinction after battling Micah Parsons and DeMarcus Lawrence in the Saints’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys

The list varies week by week, but this is a composite ranking rather than who was the best that particular week. However, because it’s early in the season, fluctuation is greater. Worthy was at the top of the list after Week 1, and now he’s out of the top-10 due to usage questions.

Fuaga doesn’t have those questions. He will be lined up at left tackle for every snap when healthy. That was the question heading into the game. Fuaga was a game-time decision due to back tightness.

The team decided he was good to go, and he delivered an impressive performance. Like many Saints players, this was Fuaga’s chance to prove it wasn’t just the Carolina Panthers. He didn’t allow a single pressure all game which includes snaps versus Parsons and Lawrence. You wouldn’t even be able to tell he missed multiple practices.

Vikings linked to five-year NFL veteran to boost WR room

With the status of wide receivers Justin Jefferson and Jordan Addison in question, Bleacher Report suggest the Vikings sign a veteran.

The Minnesota Vikings are one of the surprise teams of the 2024 season. Not many expected the Vikings to be sitting at 2-0 after an early-season tilt against the San Francisco 49ers. Perhaps just as surprising, quarterback Sam Darnold has been playing well in the early portions of the season, even leading some to wonder if the Vikings should give him another season as the bridge to eventual starter J.J. McCarthy.

For as well as Darnold has played so far this season, that could come crashing down this week as the Vikings prepare to face the Houston Texans with the very real possibility that their wide receiver corps — typically a strength of the team — is severely diminished.

All-Pro receiver Justin Jefferson suffered a quad injury in last week’s game against the 49ers. While it doesn’t appear that Jefferson suffered a serious injury, he was limited in Wednesday’s practice. Jefferson wants to play, but even if he is able to go Sunday against the Texans, he’s unlikely to be at full strength.

On the other hand, wide receiver Jordan Addison is dealing with injuries of his own, this time in the form of an ankle injury. Addison was listed as a non-participant in Wednesday’s practice and is likely questionable to go against the Texans. That leaves the Vikings with some real questions at the position, not only for this week against Houston but going forward as well, as both injuries can tend to linger.

While Minnesota may be content to wait out the injuries and see how they progress, the Bleacher Report team suggests they should be a little more aggressive in addressing the wide receiver room. In their weekly column outlining team needs heading into the week and how teams can address them, the Bleacher Report Scouting Department suggests the Vikings sign veteran wide receiver Russell Gage.

Gage, a five-year veteran, is still just 28-years-old but has not played in the league since starting four games in the 2022 season for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. That season, Gage caught 51 passes for 426 yards and five touchdowns.

During his most productive stretch, Gage was good for over 700 yards in both the 2020 and 2021 seasons with the Atlanta Falcons. Provided that he’s in shape, Gage could provide the team with a solid receiving option should they need one in place of Jefferson or Addison and could likely compete for the team’s third option when those two are healthy.
