What’s next for Klay Thompson and Warriors in free agency? “He’s a Warrior for life no matter what”

Previewing 2024 NBA free agency for Klay Thompson and Golden State Warriors, with reporting from HoopsHype Senior NBA Insider Michael Scotto.

With Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and coach Steve Kerr signed through the 2025-26 season, will Klay Thompson be the next Warriors cornerstone piece to get a new deal in free agency this summer?

Thompson, a five-time All-Star before suffering a torn ACL and Achilles that caused him to miss two and a half seasons, is among the top free agents available this summer.

With that in mind, HoopsHype asked eight NBA executives for their free agent projections for Thompson. Three executives believed Thompson would get $18-20 million annually, and the other five predicted he’d get $20-25 million annually. Four executives believed Golden State would ideally try to align Thompson with his fellow “Splash Brother,” Curry, on a two-year deal. Green, meanwhile, has a player option for the 2026-27 season.

2005 NBA re-draft: The way it should have been

HoopsHype re-drafts the 2005 class, one that was pretty weak overall but did feature Chris Paul, one of the best point guards ever.

The 2005 NBA draft will not be remembered all that fondly, as it features just one surefire Hall-of-Famer, a few other low-level All-Stars, a whole lot of role players and many more busts.

The only thing preventing the 2005 class from being thought of even more poorly is the fact that many second-round picks that year wound up enjoying solid careers for many years, including some winners of impressive accolades. Still, it’s not a draft class you’ll be blown away by.

Below, check out our re-draft of the 2005 class in the order players should have gone, in our opinion.

2004 NBA re-draft: The way it should have been

HoopsHype re-drafts the 2004 NBA Draft class, led by great players like Dwight Howard, Luol Deng and Andre Iguodala.

The 2004 NBA draft followed what was considered one of the most exceptional draft classes in the history of the league.

As such, it didn’t quite measure up in terms of top-tier talent. Nonetheless, it did boast a considerable depth of proficient players, many of whom went on to have lengthy careers in the NBA, effectively becoming valuable role players.

Below, check out our 2004 NBA re-draft, with players taken in the order they should have gone in.

Ranking: Top scorers in NBA history (regular season and playoffs combined)

We present the top scorers in NBA history using their regular-season and playoff total points combined.

Though he passed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in regular season points on February 7, 2023, LeBron James actually became the top scorer in NBA games one year earlier if you combine regular season and playoff points.

King James just reached the historical regular season 40,000-point milestone, and he’ll keep running up the score with great advantages over the likes of Kareem, Karl Malone, Kobe Bryant and Michael Jordan. The closest active player,  Kevin Durant, is almost 15,000 points away from LeBron.

2003 NBA re-draft: The way it should have been

HoopsHype re-drafts the legendary 2003 NBA Draft class, featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Bosh.

The 2003 NBA Draft class is considered one of the GOAT draft classes in league history, along with the 1996 and 1984 groups.

Not only does the ’03 class have one of the two main GOAT candidates as the No. 1 pick but it also features three other current or future Hall-of-Famers right after him, along with an abundance of serviceable role players.

Below, check out our re-draft for the 2003 class, with players going in the order we believe they’d go in today.

College Football Playoff committee agrees on ‘5+7’ format

It appears that we finally have confirmation on the playoff format.

The College Football Playoff committee announced an agreement on the format for the 2024-25 season and beyond.

“This is a very logical adjustment for the College Football Playoff based on the evolution of our conference structures since the board first adopted this new format in September 2022,” said Dr. Mark Keenum, President of Mississippi State University and Chair of the CFP Board of Managers. “I know this change will also be well received by student-athletes, coaches and fans. We all will be pleased to see this new format come to life on the field this postseason.”

The original play for the ‘6+6’ model was officially scrapped once the Pac-12 lost 10 of their 12 members to the ACC, Big 12, and Big Ten conferences. Originally the Power Five champions earned an automatic bid with the highest-ranked group of five champions also earning a berth. The remaining spots would be awarded to six at-large bids.

The new format would award the power four champions (ACC, Big 12, Big Ten, and SEC) with one final automatic bid going to the highest-ranked group of five champion and the remaining seven spots will be at-large bids.

Starting with the 2024 season, the top four conference champions will be ranked No. 1-No. 4 and will each receive first-round byes. The remaining eight teams will face off in the first round of the playoffs with the highest ranking team hosting the game. The winners will move on to face the top four seeds at the hosting team’s stadiums.

‘5+7’ CFP Format:

  • No. 1 vs the winner of No. 8 vs No. 9
  • No. 2 vs the winner of No. 7 vs No. 10
  • No. 3 vs the winner of No. 6 vs No. 11
  • No. 4 vs the winner of No. 5 vs No. 12

The quarterfinals and semifinals will be held in the New Years Six bowl games. The CFP national championship will be a neutral site game.
