8 AFC East stories from last week for Bills fans to know

AFC East stories from the past week for Buffalo Bills fans to know via the Patriots, Jets and Dolphins.

You’re probably all on top of the latest news surrounding the Buffalo Bills and we hope Bills Wire helped you get there. But let us keep you up to date with the Bills news, just outside the Bills’ realm.

The upcoming 2020 NFL season has many thinking the Bills are the favorite in the AFC East. But Buffalo isn’t just going to stroll into that title. The Dolphins, Jets, and of course the Patriots, will all have something to say about that.

So let’s stay on top of some of the latest headlines surrounding the Bills’ divisional foes now. Here are eight news stories from the other three AFC East teams from the last week right here:

Social media campaign was suggested by Dolphins’ Byron Jones

Byron Jones is a name that Bills fans are going to want to get to know. The cornerback was a big time free agency signing by the Dolphins this offseason, so when you see Stefon Diggs against the Fins in 2020, Jones might not be far behind.

But reportedly Jones already had his affect on the Bills, and the NFL in-large. On Sunday, NFL stars took to social media via their Twitter accounts and flooded the website with the “We Want To Play” campaign. Micah Hyde and Diggs were involved in that.

In doing so, the league’s stars brought attention to some of the big issues on the table against owners. The NFL and NFLPA are running out of time to agree on safety protocols for the 2020 season amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Since that happened on Sunday, the league and players have started to come together on some issues, such as eliminating the preseason.

So with Jones in mind, maybe we have reason to thank him for playing a part in getting the 2020 NFL season underway because a report says that Jones is the one who came up with the idea.

Finally, something good from South Beach.

AFC East ranked as worst tight end division in NFL

The AFC East, Buffalo Bills named worst tight end division in the NFL by CBS Sports.

Tight end play in recent years have evolved to make the position a more influential spot on the field in the NFL. The Bills’ tight end room looks a lot like a few others around the AFC East. A young promising product at the top of the depth chart that still needs time to grow.

For the Bills, that’s Dawson Knox, who’s entering the second year of his career in 2020.

But when packing the entire division into one, promise means far from perfect. CBS Sports recently ranked each NFL division by the tight ends in them. The AFC East appears at the bottom of the barrel. The worst in the NFL.

Here’s why:

There’s a lot of “what-if” here. Mike Gesicki came on strong in 2019 with 50 catches and five scores, but he still needs another step forward to be considered top-10 material. Chris Herndon flashed as a rookie and is probably underrated entering a big year for Sam Darnold, but he’s coming off a season in which he missed all but one game due to injuries and an early suspension. Dawson Knox, meanwhile, is a decent prospect who averaged almost 14 yards per catch as a rookie but should trail at least three others in targets. The Patriots, meanwhile, are taking multiple swings after granting Rob Gronkowski’s Tampa relocation, but they’ve got no surefire play-maker.

This “what if” group clearly translates to one thing: It’s time to prove it. The AFC East does have a couple of guys that have flashed, but for one reason or another, they leave something to be desired. In 2020, if there’s one guy that might have the best look at improving and it could be the Bills’ Knox.

Gesicki is probably the most-talented guy, but the Dolphins offense is a revamped unit coming into next season. It’ll take time for that grouping to lay a foundation, let alone during an offseason with a global pandemic throwing a curveball into everyone’s plans. In regard to Herndon, he falls into a bit of both Gesicki and Knox. Like the Dolphins, the Jets are re-tooling things on offense, but maybe not to as far of an extent. Like Knox, Herndon has to prove himself he can be consistent as well.

Back to Knox: The Bills have the most continuity on their offense returning in 2020. The same QB, the same offensive line, and same coaches. Plus, the addition of Stefon Diggs. Knox can really benefit from the trickle-down effect via Diggs. Defenses will have to know where he is at all times, which could lean to a bit easier coverage sent to cover other playmakers, such as the tight end.

Knox flashed as a rookie, but led the league in drops in terms of tight ends with 10. You can bet Knox has been working on correcting that this offseason, so all things considered, that’s an optimistic feeling for Buffalo’s tight end in 2020, despite this list.

AFC East said to be worst RB division in NFL

The Bills are entering the upcoming NFL season with some hope and real optimism in terms of their backfield with Devin Singletary and Zack Moss.

The Bills are entering the upcoming NFL season with some hope and real optimism in terms of their backfield with Devin Singletary and Zack Moss. But as an entire division, the AFC East was recently named the worst grouping of backfield in the entire league by CBS Sports.

In regard to the Bills’ running back duo, here’s what was said:

Singletary looked good in limited action last season and seemed like he should have become the full-time back, but it’s clear the Bills don’t want to make him a true feature guy. Moss should prove to be a nice complement, given his size and pass-catching ability.

The entire AFC East is broken down here, but in terms of the Bills’ duo, it’s truthfully not the worst assessment. As mentioned, Buffalo has hope and optimism in Western New York about their duo. But that doesn’t mean they have proven much. Combined, they have 775 rushing yards between them, all of which came from Singletary’s lone pro season. Not only does Singletary have to show he can do it again, Moss has to show he can… period.

In terms of the other teams in the AFC East, the Jets do have Le’Veon Bell, but because of offensive line play, he’s been mainly ineffective since jumped over from his Steelers holdout. CBS Sports then actually predicts Cam Newton as the Pats’ best rusher, which is not a good start for them on such a list, while the Dolphins’ pair of Jordan Howard and Matt Bredia has potential, but essentially has to prove it as well.

Overall, it’s hard to argue which division was named the best in the NFL: the NFC East. When you’ve got Ezekiel Elliot and Saquon Barkley headlining a group, it’s hard to argue.

Cam’s contract

We found out just last week that the Patriots brought former Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on board to help replace Tom Brady. Prior to that, it was assumed Jarrett Stidham would be the guy but… not so fast.

The news in general turned some heads in the NFL world. What did so further was the details of his contract. Newton signed a deal worth $1.05 million in salary in 2020, the veteran minimum for a player with the quarterback’s NFL experience. Newton is guaranteed just $550,000, but with incentives in his deal, he could earn up to $7.5 million, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. That’s pretty underpaid. But Newton has since responded to that criticism.

On Thursday, Newton took to his social media account on Instagram and wrote this message:

“THÏŠ ÏŠ ÑØT ÄßØŪT MØÑĒ¥ FØR MĒ; ïtš âbøût RĒŠ₽ĒČT.”

Newton’s looking to change the narrative about him, but of course, the Bills will have something to say about that.

NBA Draft to coincide with Chiefs vs. Bills Week 6 ‘Thursday Night Football’ game

The NBA Draft will face some stiff competition from the Kansas City Chiefs in prime-time.

As the professional sports world begins to plan for life following the COVID-19 pandemic, fans are set to experience unprecedented overlap between several professional sporting leagues.

The NHL, NBA, and MLS have all announced plans to resume play in the coming months, with July as the target start date. The MLB is expected to soon follow the other leagues. With those plans will come newfound competition for viewership between several leagues, specifically during prime-time. Some will even have events that contend with NFL games at the beginning of the 2020 season.

The 2020 NBA Draft was originally scheduled to take place on Thursday, June 25. Now they’ve rescheduled the event for October 15. What else is taking place on October 15th? The Kansas City Chiefs Week 6 matchup with the Buffalo Bills on “Thursday Night Football.” It’s a matchup between two teams that are expected to be extremely competitive within the AFC conference. It could even be a potential preview of a future game to occur in the AFC playoffs.

Why is this significant, though? In 2019, the Chiefs were part of four of the top-50 TV broadcasts in the United States. Three of those games came during the NFL’s national broadcast windows and they each had over 20 million viewers. Now, Kansas City is coming off of a Super Bowl title and features one of the most exciting rosters in football, headlined by star QB Patrick Mahomes. They’ve proved themselves to be must-watch television. The NBA is prepared to have their draft go head-to-head with one of the Chiefs’ five prime-time matchups in 2020.

The NBA Draft already struggled to attract viewership in 2019, with an average of just 3.09 million viewers. Chiefs fans shouldn’t worry about the NBA Draft attracting viewers from their Week 6 meeting with the Bills. But the NBA, they should be very worried. They could be looking at an all-time low in viewership for their draft.
