Rumor: Big Ten Conference to cancel College Football this Fall

According to multiple reports, the Big Ten Conference is heavily leaning towards canceling the college football season this fall.

[jwplayer FN7IWpf5]

If there is one word I think we are all getting sick of hearing, it’s ‘uncertainty.’ Well, it looks like some uncertainty surrounding this upcoming college football season might become a real certainty tomorrow, as rumors have swirled Sunday evening that the Big Ten Conference will be canceling the Fall College Football season this week.

According to numerous reports, the Presidents and Chancellors of all the Big Ten Conference schools met tonight along with the Big Ten Commissioner Kevin Warren to discuss this upcoming season, and according to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, the prevailing sentiment on the call was to cancel the fall season.

Matt Jones of Kentucky Sports Radio also posted a similar report. According to his sources, the Big Ten will most likely be announcing the cancellation of College Football in the Fall on Monday:

While I also have some concerns about pushing the season to the spring and making college players play both a spring and fall season next year, the most immediate need will be to keep players healthy this fall and this seems like a logical way to do that.

Big Ten ready to pull plug on football this fall according to ESPN report

According to ESPN, sources close to the situation say that the Big Ten is prepared to cancel or postpone the 2020 college football season.

The news about the potential of a college football season continues to be grimmer by the day. After the MAC canceled its fall football season rumors and speculation ran rampant about the Big Ten and other Power Five conferences following suit.

We didn’t get the official new yesterday, but some prominent Power Five presidents told CBS Sports’ Dennis Dodd that the cancellation of the season appeared inevitable. And it wasn’t the only sourced report out there about the potential of a doomsday scenario.

Now, today, we get word that the Power Five commissioners had an emergency meeting to discuss the fate of fall sports and that the Big Ten presidents, following a regularly scheduled meeting Saturday, as a whole were ready to pull the plug on the season and perhaps move it to the spring.

Sources reportedly told ESPN that no vote took place by the Big Ten presidents on Saturday but that there was another meeting scheduled to take place Sunday night.

“It doesn’t look good,” one Power Five athletic director told ESPN.

Sources told the worldwide leader in sports programming that it’s now just a matter of which Power Five conference will be the first to make the move towards a canceled or postponed season and that the others would likely follow suit.

“Nobody wanted to be the first to do it,” a Power Five coach told ESPN, “and now nobody will want to be the last.”

Based on reports, many feel either the Pac-12 or Big Ten would likely be the first conference to make the call and that the ACC, Big 12, and SEC — who would prefer to wait and see what happens when students return to school — would fall in line thereafter.

So what’s the bottom line with this? Nothing is official and so there’s still some hope, but it’s hard to see a path towards a season this fall with all the chatter and reports circulating.

REPORT: Big Ten moving towards cancelling the 2020 fall football season

The Big Ten is closing in on a decision to cancel fall football

In the last couple of days, it has sadly felt as though the writing is on the wall for fall football in the Big Ten conference. In the last hour, more outlets have stated that sources are saying a fall season is likely being cancelled due to the coronavirus and its effects.

Sports Illustrated college football insider Ross Dellenger stated that sources are telling him that the Big Ten is moving towards a cancelled season.

While nothing has yet been confirmed about the season and its cancellation, it feels at this point that the Big Ten conference, and the rest of the country, are gearing up to stop fall sports before they begin.

Stay tuned at BadgersWire for more on this developing story throughout the evening and into tomorrow.

The Big Ten releases a statement about instructions for fall camp

An update from the Big Ten on instructions for fall camp

On top of the news that the MAC is cancelling their fall football season, things are not looking great for the Big Ten conference this fall.

This morning, the Big Ten conference released a statement about the upcoming start of fall camp and announced that they would be taking a very cautious approach. Within the release, the conference detailed that athletes will wear helmets only, and will not move to pads beyond the first two days.

The decision is related to the fact that there is still uncertainty surrounding a start date to the season, and if that start date will come this fall.

Here is the complete release from the Big Ten.

Next … Big Ten statement on fall camp progression

Report: Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren prefers spring football season

According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren is pushing to move the football season to the spring.

If you’re just getting around to the news cycle for today in college sports, you’ve missed a lot. The MAC shelved its football season for 2020, the Big Ten released a statement putting a pause on progression to pads for fall camp, and there’s a meeting of Big Ten presidents where we expect some news on fall sports to come forth.

To be fair, the meeting of B1G presidents was a regularly scheduled one, but with all the developments today, one can say with pretty good certainty that discussions will center around the plausibility of having a college football season this fall.

In fact, according to a report from the Detroit Free Press, if Big Ten commissioner Kevin Warren has anything to do with it, the college football season would be moved to the spring. That’s at least according to a couple of sources not close to the situation, but not authorized to speak on the development.

While moving college football to the spring would likely give the COVID-19 pandemic a chance to mitigate because of the likelihood of a vaccine or herd immunity, it raises all kinds of operational and timing concerns that have been discussed and exhausted ad nauseum.

You will undoubtedly have several high profile player opt-out, the time between seasons would cause safety concerns, and the 2021 NFL Draft could also staddle the season.

This, like most news today, is a developing one, so as more becomes available, we’ll be on top of it.

Big Ten presidents reportedly meeting today to presumably discuss fall sports

According to sources close to ESPN and Pete Thamel, Big Ten presidents are meeting Saturday to presumably discuss fall sports.

We’ve had a flurry of glass half empty news today when it comes to the optimism of having Ohio State, and college football in general for 2020. The Mid-American conference canceled its 2020 football season, there have been several reports on social media of everything being scrapped, and the Big Ten released a statement on pausing the progression to pads for all teams’ fall camp efforts.

It’s that last big of breaking news that we might have more on a bit later. According to sources close to ESPN’s Adam Rittenberg and Heather Dinich — and first reported by Pete Thamel — Big Ten presidents are meeting today to discuss things further. It was reportedly a meeting already scheduled, but there are rumblings about some institutions’ leaders arriving at a decision to cancel the football season.

There is no context for what the meeting is about, but one can only assume that all of the news of the day has moved things closer to shelving the season. That being said, if 2020 has taught us anything, it’s that we can only take things one day at a time and continue to be hopeful.

We’ve had prospects of the season head into cloudy conditions before, only to emerge with more positive news and actions. Maybe it’ll be the same here.

However, if I were a betting man, I’d say things are not headed in the right direction. Read into that as you will. We’ll, of course, stay on top of things here.

Mid-American conference cancels football season for 2020

The Mid-American conference has canceled its 2020 football season as another casualty of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In a further sign of the times, the Mid-American conference has canceled its football season for 2020.

Now, before we jump off the college football bridge, it must be noted that non-Power Five schools canceling the season is more a product of no ability to make things work from a fiscal perspective. With the Power Five conferences largely electing to play conference-only games, the usual big-money payouts for playing the big boys just aren’t there for the Group of Five teams.

Budgets are tight in collegiate athletics, but they are even tighter for athletic programs that need this additional revenue to make things work.

Stadium’s Brett McMurphy was the first to report the news.

There is cause for concern though and we have to be realistic.

Even though this is a non-Power Five conference deciding to make this move, it still could have significant ramifications and domino effects for the rest of college football. The MAC is right in the footprint of the Big Ten, and the move will most likely be another decision point for conference commissioner Kevin Warren and the conference’s member athletic directors.

Remember, there are no games against MAC schools this year anymore, so there’s still a chance this thing gets off the ground. It sure feels like another pounding of the nail though, and we’ll just have to see how it all plays out and if there’s further reaction from the Power Five conferences.

The Big Ten has released its football schedule, starting in the first week of September. Here’s a quick first look at each game with predictions and possible lines.

 Pete Fiutak @PeteFiutak

Let’s have fun and just assume the Big Ten season will go off without a hitch. Done before the lines are released for the early games, here are the first guesses, predictions, and line projections for Week 1 of the Big Ten season.

Ohio State vs Illinois

Thursday, September 3
Memorial Stadium, Champaign, IL

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: The Buckeyes will struggle early on as they try to win the Fiesta Bowl as they press a little out of the gate, and then things will get back to normal early in the second quarter.

Illinois might have a slew of transfers coming in for the defensive front, but it won’t be enough as the Ohio State offensive line starts banging away and taking over. The big plays will come as Justin Fields and company start to score quickly, but the time of possession battle will lean the other way in the second half.

It’ll be more of a methodical win for OSU than sensational.

First Thought Prediction: Ohio State 41, Illinois 17
First Thought Line Guess: Ohio State -27.5

Big Ten 2020 Composite Schedule, 10 Most Interesting Games

Indiana vs Wisconsin

Friday, September 4
Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, WI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: These two haven’t played since 2017 with Wisconsin winning the last ten games since dropping a stunner in 2002.

How ugly has the series been? Over the last five games, Wisconsin has won by an average of 60 to 12 with the low mark an 83-20 squeaker back in 2010.

This year’s Hoosier team, though, should be more of a problem for Bucky.

QB Michael Penix and the offensive backfield should give the Badger D fits for about a half, and the lines are just strong enough to hold up. But the reworked UW O line will take over and super-recruit RB Jalen Berger gets into a groove.

First Thought Prediction: Wisconsin 30, Indiana 16
First Thought Line Guess: Wisconsin -10

Minnesota vs Michigan State

Saturday, September 5
Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, MI

Knee-Jerk Instant Analysis: It’s the opener of the Mel Tucker era at Michigan State as his Spartans get a Minnesota team looking to prove that 2019 wasn’t any sort of a fluke.

Can the Gopher passing game get hot early on without star receivers Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman around anymore? It’ll be okay, but the running game will struggle against a Spartan defensive front will be a rock right out of the gate.

On the flip side, the Michigan State offense won’t be able to take advantage of a good defensive performance as drive after drive stalls. Minnesota will pull it out on a late field goal in a rough game with points and good offensive plays coming at a premium.

First Thought Prediction: Minnesota 20, Michigan State 19
First Thought Line Guess: Michigan State -3.5

5. Big Ten 10-Game Schedule. The Basics …

The Big Ten released its 2020 football schedule. And the key parts are …

– Ten games, no non-conference dates. This was put forth before by the Big Ten, but now it’s settled. It’s all Big Ten vs. Big Ten battles spread out over the season.

– Unlike what the other Power Five conferences appear to be doing – kicking things off in mid-to-late September – the Big Ten is going to start right away on September 5th. Actually, it’ll all start on Thursday, September 3rd when Ohio State goes to Illinois. This allows each Big Ten team to have to built in weeks off along with an open date on November 28th for a possible make-up game.

– Also unlike the other Power Five conferences, the Big Ten is keeping its championship game for December 5th.

– Ohio State and Michigan don’t play on the final weekend. Go ahead and make your jokes about how the Big Ten doesn’t want Jim Harbaugh to end the season with a loss, but the October 24th date sets itself up to be something special, especially if it’s a night game.

November 21st – the final weekend scheduled for the regular season – is all interdivisional games, and so is the first week of the season. The schedule is front loaded with divisional battles with the flexibility to fill in the gaps later if there has to be a week off.
