Nick Saban warns team about how Alabama could lose fear factor

During Nick Saban’s weekly radio show Thursday night, Saban spoke on the Alabama standard and wanting his players to maintain the fear factor they have created.

For the first time in a long time, the Alabama Crimson Tide looked vulnerable, even in a win.

We are now six days removed from a very narrow two-point win against the Florida Gators last Saturday, and during Saban’s weekly radio show on Thursday night he chose not to mince words when describing the performance.

“You’re playing on the road and then the energy and the enthusiasm of the other team starts kicking in, and then your players start getting a little bit frustrated and affects their decision-making and ability to be responsible and do their job,” Saban explained. “Then you start making mistakes, and the result of that is you become pretty ordinary pretty quick.”

“I probably wasn’t as pleased as what I would like to be,” he said. “Sometimes you win the game but you don’t really beat the other team was what I kind of told our players.”

Saban remarked that the team became “ordinary” shortly after securing a 21-3 lead during the first 20 minutes of the game.

He took a portion of the show to speak on the Alabama standard that has been built and preserved over a lengthy span of 14 years, saying that the standard must continue to be maintained.

“Every team has to buy into that culture,” he said. “That’s one of the things that I’m really trying to get this team to really buy into. I don’t want the other team to say, ‘Hey, we were the more physical team. Hey, we were the tougher team. They didn’t really beat us.’

“That’s not how it’s been. And that’s not how we want it to be. But we have to mature our way into that, learning lessons like we learned in Florida. Hopefully we’ll see how we respond and grow from those things.”

Saban also reminded us that there is a lack of upperclassmen on the team, saying that he does “not think people realize just how young our team really is,” adding that there are only two seniors in his 10-player leadership group.

“We have a very young team, and I think your team sort of grows in stages of development,” he said.

In many ways, the youth on the squad is a good thing. The experience they’ll gather this season will no doubt create an advantage as they age. On the flip side, inexperience and youth threatens the integrity of the season when the ultimate goal is yet another national championship.

Saban was also told about Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Urban Meyer’s comments comparing an NFL schedule to playing the Crimson Tide each week.

“Your character is much easier to keep than it is to give away and try to get back,” he said. “I’m talking about the tradition that we have here. The things, the culture we’ve created in terms of being a team that is well-respected and maybe even in some ways feared because of the way they compete, the toughness they play with, the intensity they play with and how they can finish. When you play in the league, you want the other teams in your league having that thought about you. Well, you’ve got to keep that. You can’t give it away.”

It’s clear that Saban wants his student-athletes to know that the perceived fear of Alabama could lapse if the fear itself is no longer justified by tough, intense play.

We should look at the game against Southern Miss on Saturday to see if the Crimson Tide have been able to fix some of the lingering issues still plaguing the team after three weeks.

4-star OL Elijah Prichett names UGA, Bama to top schools

Four-star OL Elijah Prichett plays football for Carver High School and is the top-ranked prospect in Georgia that remains uncommitted

The University of Georgia has offered a scholarship to football recruit Elijah Pritchett in Oct. 2020. Now, Georgia is among Pritchett’s top four schools.

Pritchett is a member of the class of 2022 and plays offensive tackle. He has great size at 6 feet, 6 inches and weighs 280 pounds. Pritchett is the top-ranked high school senior in Georgia that remains uncommitted.

Pritchett plays high school football for George Washington Carver High School in Columbus, Georgia. Pritchett is ranked as a four-star recruit and the No. 9 offensive tackle in the class of 2022.

Kirby Smart and the Dawgs will look to keep the talented in-state lineman in The Peach State.  Pritchett, who has committed to the 2022 All-American Bowl, is rated as the No. 8 recruit in the state of Georgia. The Bulldogs do not like to miss on elite in-state prospects.

The four-star offensive tackle announced his top four schools of Georgia, Alabama, FSU, and USC via Twitter:

Best of luck to Pritchett wherever he ends up playing college football. We’ll provide updates throughout his recruitment. He’s a key in-state player to watch in the class of 2022.

Georgia and Alabama are fighting to have the top-rated recruiting class in the SEC as usual. Nationally, UGA has the fifth-ranked class and Alabama has the fourth-ranked class.

Elijah Pritchett is currently projected to sign with the Florida State Seminoles. FSU desperately needs improved offensive line play and Pritchett would be a huge addition to their  recruiting class of 2022.

Buford DB Jake Pope commits to Alabama over UGA

Buford High School safety Jake Pope, who is ranked as a four-star recruit, has decided he will play college football at Bama

Buford High School safety Jake Pope has commitment to the Alabama Crimson Tide. Pope is ranked as a four-star recruit.

Jake Pope announced his decision ahead of Buford’s opening game against North Cobb. Pope committed to  Alabama over Georgia, UNC, Ohio State, and Notre Dame.

Jake Pope is a member of the class of 2022 and received numerous scholarship offers from top college programs.

Pope plays wide receiver and safety. He’s ranked as the No. 26 safety in the class of 2022, but has received more recruiting interest than what this ranking would indicate.

The four-star is 6 feet, 2 inches and weighs 190 pounds. He plays against some of the strongest competition possible at the high school level and won a 6A state championship in 2020 with Buford. Jake Pope was named all-region for his efforts in 2020.

Jake Pope is a versatile athlete and a good route runner. He is an impressive tackler in the open field and made critical plays to help Buford win a state championship. Alabama and Nick Sabab love players who excel in the clutch.

Kirby Smart and the University of Georgia could have used a talented safety like Jake Pope. Georgia could lose both of its starting safeties (Lewis Cine and Christopher Smith) next offseason. Now, it is back to the drawing board for UGA.

Pope announced his commitment via Twitter:

College Football News’ 2021 NFL draft rankings by school: Where’s UGA?

College Football News released 2021 NFL draft rankings by college. Where did Georgia football finish?

College Football News recently released its 2021 NFL draft rankings by college, ranking all the teams that had a player selected in last week’s event.

Here are the rules, per the writer behind the rankings, Pete Fiutak:

A school gets 7 points for each first-round draft pick, 6 for a second, 5 for a third, 4 for a fourth, 3 for a fifth, 2 for a sixth, and 1 for a seventh-round selection.

Georgia had nine players selected in the draft, a school record. Alabama and Ohio State each had 10 players.

Related: All the Georgia Bulldogs selected in the 2021 NFL draft

Fiutak ranked Georgia third, with 40 total points.

Georgia had one first-round pick (7 points), two second-round picks (12), three third-rounders (15), one fifth (3), one in the sixth (2) and a seventh-round pick (1).

Trailing Georgia is rival Florida, which finished fifth with 35 points. Other teams of note include Clemson checking in sixth, LSU at eighth, Auburn tied for 30th and Tennessee tied for – wait for it – 35th with 7 points and two draft picks.

The Bulldogs definitely made a statement in this draft and may even look to break draft their record next season.

2021 NFL Draft: Rankings By College. Which Schools Won The Draft?

Kirk Herbstreit releases his college football top six rankings: Gators out

Kirk Herbstreit releases his college football top six rankings: Florida Gators out, but how is Iowa State ranked over Georgia?

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit released his latest rankings of the top six teams with hopes of making the College Football Playoff. There’s only one week left to go in college football, but this upcoming week will feature the SEC and ACC Championships, which both have CFP implications.

There weren’t  many top teams playing in Week 15’s action. LSU upset Florida behind a boot from kicker Cade York and a show throw from Florida defensive back Marco Wilson in the biggest game of the week.

Clemson, Notre Dame, Texas A&M, Iowa State, Cincinnati, and Ohio State all either had the week off or had their games postponed. The Cincinnati Bearcats haven’t played in nearly a month. Alabama cruised past Arkansas in another dominant victory. The Crimson Tide look like college football’s top team this season.

In the ACC, Notre Dame and Clemson are going to have a rematch in the ACC Championship. The winner of that game certainly makes the CFP, but if Notre Dame loses, then they are still going to make it.

Here’s who Kirk Herbstreit puts in his top six schools:

Notably, Herbstreit now ranks Iowa State over Georgia and Florida. Iowa State is one of the hottest teams in college football, but they opened the season with an embarrassing 31-14 loss to Louisiana. Yes, Louisiana is ranked, but they still blew out Iowa State.

Georgia has only lost to Florida and Alabama, which are much superior competition than Louisiana. At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter because there’s essentially no path to the College Football Playoff for Georgia.

Kirk Herbstreit updates his College Football Playoff rankings

Kirk Herbstreit updates his College Football Playoff rankings. Where is Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, and more?

ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit named his latest rankings of the top six teams with hopes of making the College Football Playoff. There weren’t many upsets in Week 14’s action. Coastal Carolina knocked off BYU in the biggest game of the week. Coastal Carolina now has a chance to make a New Year’s Six bowl.

Clemson and Ohio State won in convincing conference wins. The Florida Gators slipped by Tennessee and Texas A&M won against Auburn. Indiana defeated Wisconsin cementing one of their better seasons in recent memory. Alabama dominated LSU and the Georgia Bulldog game against Vanderbilt was postponed.

In the SEC, Alabama and Florida are now set to play each other in the SEC Championship. The SEC Championship winner will make the College Football Playoff and either Florida quarterback Kyle Trask or Alabama quarterback Mac Jones is expected to win the Heisman.

In the ACC, Notre Dame and Clemson are going to have a rematch in the ACC Championship. Ohio State looks like the only other serious College Football Playoff contender. Texas A&M could get in if Florida loses in the SEC Championship Game, but the Aggies will need more help than that.

Here’s who Kirk Herbstreit puts in his top six schools:

Notably, Herbstreit now ranks Texas A&M over Cincinnati. The Cincinnati Bearcats didn’t play on Dec. 5. They’ll face Tulsa in one of their last games to impress the College Football Playoff Selection Committee.

Cincinnati would need lot help going forward. They still could make the College Football Playoff if Florida and Clemson lose in their conference championships. Still, the Bearcats would need Texas A&M to lose to either Mississippi or Tennessee.

Top prospects lead Alabama to blowout win over LSU

Mac Jones, Najee’ Harris and DeVonta Smith all delivered big performances in Alabama’s dominant win over LSU

Last year, LSU beat Alabama in Tuscaloosa on their way to an SEC title and a national championship.

The Crimson Tide got their revenge Saturday night with a 55-17 blowout win in Baton Rouge, and their top prospects led the way with dominant performances.

Quarterback Mac Jones continued his Heisman-worthy season with a near-perfect outing, completing 20 of his 28 passes for 385 yards and four touchdowns, with no interceptions. Wide receiver Devonta Smith caught seven passes for 219 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, while running back Najee’ Harris rushed for 145 yards and three scores of his own.

With the victory, Alabama clinched the SEC West, and a spot in the SEC title game against Florida.

WATCH: Alabama WR DeVonta Smith makes leaping 1-handed TD catch

Watch Alabama wide receiver DeVonta Smith go airborne for his third touchdown catch of the first half against LSU

Not much is going right for the LSU defense Saturday night against Alabama, and DeVonta Smith continues to be their biggest problem.

After torching them mercilessly for most of the first half, Smith capped off the second quarter with his third touchdown reception, a leaping one-handed in the back of the end zone.

The Crimson Tide are leading 45-14 at halftime, and Smith is proving to NFL scouts that it doesn’t matter that he’s only 175 pounds.
