Final look at Penn State-Auburn with expert picks and analysis

One final look at predictions, and analysis ahead of the 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff of Penn State-Auburn.

Game day has finally arrived for the No. 23 Penn State Nittany Lions and Auburn Tigers. Last year the Tigers fell in State College 28-20, this time around it is Auburn looking to defend the home turf.

Eddie Timanus of USA TODAY Sports broke down several nonconference matchups, including this showdown at Jordan-Hare.

Why fans should watch this game?

This could be a yardstick game for both programs as they renew acquaintances from a year ago, though the Nittany Lions weren’t really able to build on last year’s victory over the Tigers in State College. This Penn State squad, however, has already delivered a hard-fought win on the road at Purdue, with veteran QB Sean Clifford able to shake off a terrible interception with a game-winning drive. Auburn should be equally prepared after being pushed at home by San Jose State last week, but QB T.J. Finley has been unexceptional.

Obviously, if you are an Auburn fan you will be tuned in for this game. This will be a great measuring stick for the Tigers as they look to begin the year 3-0. The wins over Mercer and San Jose State left a lot to be desired. In the opener, it was never a doubt but Finley’s two interceptions were a huge negative.

The passing attack from the starter had one long play of 39 yards, outside of the long pass to Javarrius Johnson, T.J. Finley would finish 8-13 for 73 yards. The home team needs a lot more from their quarterback. Against San Jose State, the team trailed to a Mountain West opponent at halftime despite being a three-touchdown favorite. Once again the quarterbacks threw a pair of interceptions.

We will find out at 2:30 p.m. CT if the passers are up to the challenge of the Nittany Lions defense that is giving up 11.3 yards per completion and 264.5 yards per game. Manny Diaz’s unit is also allowing just 47.5% of attempts to be completed.

Why this game could disappoint?

The atmosphere might not be as electric as it would if this were a night game, but there should still be plenty of noise in Jordan-Hare. Things could get a bit more staid if this becomes a punting contest, a likely possibility if the ground defenses take over.

A night kickoff would give a different feel to this game but the Tigers will play the schedule they were handed. The hope is that Tank Bigsby gets rolling in this game but the Nittany Lions are only allowing 80 yards per game and 3.3 YPC.

Here is how the USA TODAY Sports national experts predicted the game:

Scooby Axson: Penn State

Jace Evans: Auburn

Paul Myerberg: Penn State

Erick Smith: Penn State

Eddie Timanus: Penn State

Dan Wolken: Auburn

Though Penn State is a Top 25 team, technically, it is hard to figure why the Nittany Lions are a favorite going on the road against Auburn. Penn State was fortunate to escape Week 1 with a win at Purdue, driving down the field for the winning touchdown with less than a minute to go. Auburn is a better team than Purdue, and even though the Tigers have not looked super impressive early this season either, it’s going to be a tall order for Penn State to come down to Jordan-Hare Stadium and play against a pretty physical team. Auburn wins a very low scoring game and solidifies Bryan Harsin’s job status, at least until next week. – Wolken

Looks like Penn State gets the nod here 4-2.

Five things to know about the Penn State Nittany Lions

Get to know Auburn’s next opponent, the Penn State Nittany Lions

After two games against overmatched opponents, Auburn will be looking to get revenge Saturday against the Penn State Nittany Lions.

Both teams are 2-0 on the season but have gotten their quite differently. Penn State beat Purdue 35-31 on a last-minute touchdown to open their season and blew out Ohio 46-10 last week.

Auburn took care of Mercer 42-16 but narrowly beat San Jose State 24-16 last week. Auburn has put the disappointing win behind them and is now focused on the Nittany Lions and getting revenge from their 28-20 loss last season in Beaver Stadium.

Here are five things to know about Penn State ahead of the game, which is set to start at 2:30 p.m. CT in Jordan-Hare Stadium and will be on CBS.

Auburn vs Penn State: Quarterback Tale of the Tape

Breaking down the QBs for this weekend’s showdown at Jordan-Hare.

On Saturday we have two teams featuring 2-0 records going head to head. Unlike the Penn State Nittany Lions, the Auburn Tigers are facing their first Power Five opponent on the schedule. Penn State opened up its campaign with a Big Ten showdown against Purdue. The Tigers faced FCS foe Mercer and San Jose State of the Mountain West.

Going into the game we have quarterbacks at two different stages. The Nittany Lions roll out seasoned veteran Sean Clifford and the Tigers counter with unproven [autotag]T.J. Finley[/autotag], who will make his sixth start for Auburn since taking over for the injured Bo Nix last season.

As the kickoff for Auburn-Penn State draws near, we take a look at the tale of the tape between the two signal callers.

Sean Clifford vs TJ Finley

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

Here is how they break down:

Sean Clifford vs TJ Finley
6-2 Ht 6-7
220 Wt 246
Senior Class Junior
39 Comp 22
64 Att 34
60.9 Comp% 64.7
495 Yards 279
7.7 YPA 8.2
5 TDs 1
1 INTs 3

Based on the numbers Clifford is the more accomplished passer of the two. Finley has been splitting reps with backup Robby Ashford. Neither Auburn QB has cemented themselves as the solution to the Tigers’ offensive woes. It doesn’t help with the penalties and no clear-cut No. 1 option in the passing game either.

Last season Nix was under center for Bryan Harsin, we will soon find out if Finley or Ashford fare any better against the Nittany Lions.

Kickoff time for Auburn-Penn State announced by CBS

The kickoff time for the Auburn-Penn State rematch revealed.

One of the biggest non-SEC matchups on the Auburn Tigers football schedule is the return game from last season.

Last season it was a close battle between Auburn and the Big Ten’s Penn State Nittany Lions. Head coach Bryan Harsin and the Tigers are looking for retribution on the Plains.

Following a six-yard touchdown run by Tank Bigsby and a 43-yard field goal from Anders Carlson, the Tigers found themselves within a point at 21-20 with the entirety of the fourth quarter still to go. Unfortunately, their last-ditch attempt to tie up the game at 28-20 fell to the turf.

Bigsby hopes for better results than he and the team had in Happy Valley. We now know that this game won’t be at night like the 2021 matchup.

Per CBS, the kickoff time for the rematch is set for 2:30 p.m. CT at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Auburn and Penn State have played just three times in their history with the Nittany Lions holding the 2-1 edge. The only Auburn win came in the 2003 Capital One Bowl, in which Ronnie Brown scored both touchdowns in the 13-9 victory, the winning run came with three minutes left in the game.

Can Auburn tie the series back up at two apiece? We will find out at 2:30 pm on Sept. 17.

Auburn-Penn State among the top nonconference games of 2022

Where do you rank the Auburn-Penn State rematch among the top nonconference games of 2022?

When it comes to the 2022 college football schedule for the Auburn Tigers there is really only one game fans should circle. No offense to Mercer, San Jose State, or Western Kentucky.

The Penn State Nittany Lions are one of those iconic teams and they bring a lot more eyeballs than the other three games. This year War Eagle is looking for some retribution after dropping the game in Happy Valley, 28-20.

This year’s contest will feature a new quarterback for Auburn, we just aren’t quite sure who will be the guy under center. As far as where this game sits among the best nonconference matchups, On3 has it among the top 15 of the upcoming season.

Penn State at Auburn: Sept. 17 at Jordan-Hare Stadium

Matthew OHaren-USA TODAY Sports

What On3 Says…

This is a Week 3 game and it will be the second road trip for Penn State, which opens at Purdue. Auburn has it far easier in September: The Tigers open the season with five consecutive home games and have Mercer and San Jose State in the first two weeks. Penn State beat Auburn in Happy Valley last season. Auburn seems likely to be worse than it was last season, when it finished 6-7, but how much will the home-field advantage help the Tigers? This is the only Big Ten-SEC regular-season matchup.

Last season Tank Bigsby was the hero as he rushed for over 100 yards and both of Auburn’s touchdowns. What does he have in store for the encore?

Week 3 SEC Power Rankings: Alabama loses top spot

What are your thoughts on these SEC power rankings?

There was some moving and shaking at the top of the SEC’s power rankings this week.

Alabama edged by Florida in the Swamp, whereas Georgia continues to dominate after taking care of SOut Carolina. The Auburn Tigers lost to Penn State, and Kentucky looked horrible against Chattanooga. Ole Miss has a Heisman contender in Matt Corral, Arkansas has a 2023 Heisman contender in KJ Jefferson, Mississippi State is back to being bad, and Vanderbilt continues to get worse.

We are getting more information about these teams every single week now that teams are playing tougher levels of compeition.

Here are my SEC power rankings after week three.

Five winners from Auburn vs. Penn State

Here are five winners from Saturday night’s game vs. Penn State.

Saturday night did not go the way the Tigers intended, but some positives can still be taken away from this game.

The most impressive thing was Auburn’s ability to fight back after getting down. We’ve seen Auburn teams in the past surrender on offense early in the game when momentum starts to shift. Auburn looked calm, and it executed. It never backed down. Sure, there were some miscues, but the Tigers didn’t look panicked or out of sorts. I hope it translates to success in the future. Auburn needs a big road victory.

Here are five winners from Saturday night’s 28-20 loss to Penn State.

Five losers from Auburn vs Penn State

Thoughts?

That is not the way I expected that game to go.

So many questionable decisions. The Tigers had so many opportunities to either take control of the game, or get back into the game, and they couldn’t capitalize.

It took Sean Clifford’s best game of his life to put Penn State on top of Auburn 28-20. In the end, Auburn’s receivers couldn’t step up, and Nix missed some throws downfield. The offensive line wasn’t the issue. In fact, I’d argue they played well. There’s a lot of fingers to be pointed around.

Here are my five losers from Auburn’s heartbreaking loss to Penn State.
