The staff predicts the winner of Auburn-Missouri

The Auburn Tigers will host the Missouri Tigers for the first time. How confident is the staff in an Auburn win on Saturday?

Week 4 in college football is the SEC opener for the Auburn Tigers. After knocking off Mercer and San Jose State to begin the season, Bryan Harsin’s squad fell to Penn State, 41-12.

After the worst home loss since a 38-0 thumping by the Georgia Bulldogs in 2012, the home team looks to bounce back in front of the home crowd at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The visitors come in with a similar resume and are led by a former Auburn assistant, Eli Drinkwitz.

Both head coaches are hovering around the .500 mark with their schools. Drinkwitz was 12-1 after one season at Appalachian State before taking over Missouri. Since the beginning of the 2021 season, both coaches are 8-8 after finishing 6-7 with bowl game losses to end the campaign.

It almost feels like these two coaches are mirror images of one another. The only difference is that Missouri’s head coach didn’t lose five-straight games to close out last year. But that is neither here nor there, the focus is on winning this SEC matchup on Saturday.

With that being said, the Auburn Wire staff weighs in on the game with predictions and X-Factors for this all-Tiger matchup.

Five reasons Auburn could struggle against Missouri

Missouri could pose more of a challenge than some might think. We break down five reasons Auburn could struggle on Saturday.

For the first time in their brief history, the Auburn Tigers will host Missouri at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

The all-time series history between these two SEC schools dates back to the 1973 Sun Bowl. Missouri won that matchup 34-17 and they wouldn’t meet again until the 2013 SEC Championship game. They played each other again in 2017 in Columbia, Missouri. Now, Auburn gets a chance to be the host in this matchup.

When you look at the resumes for both teams, they are eerily similar. Both teams have wins over an FCS opponent (Auburn vs Mercer, Missouri vs Abilene Christian). Both teams defeated Group of Five teams (Auburn vs San Jose State, Missouri vs Louisiana Tech). And finally, both teams lost to a Power Five team by 28+ points.

Both of these teams are in the bottom half of the SEC in terms of scoring offense and scoring defense. This isn’t a “must-win” game but it certainly is an important game, especially for Harsin.

With a lot on the line for this game on Saturday, Auburn Wire breaks down five reasons why the Tigers could struggle as the home favorite this week.

A quartet of conference games highlights Week 4’s SEC action

Previewing Week 4 action around the SEC.

There will be plenty of SEC action this week as all 14 teams will be on the field spanning 10 games. There are four conference games on the docket and it begins at 11:00 a.m. CT when the Missouri Tigers face off with the Auburn Tigers at Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Following that game we have the Tennessee Vols hosting the Florida Gators at 2:30 p.m. CT at Neyland Stadium.  The night caps will feature a Southwest Classic between the Arkansas Razorbacks and Texas A&M Aggies from AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, and Vanderbilt Commodores at Alabama Crimson Tide from Bryant-Denny Stadium.

Outside of those four games, the six nonconfernce tilts should all be in the SEC’s favor. We break down all 10 games with our Week 4 preview. All games are listed in order of kickoff.
