Cardinals injury report: RB David Johnson off report; Patrick Peterson limited

David Johnson did not have any injury designation to start the week.

The Arizona Cardinals began their week of practice for Week 11 to prepare for the San Francisco 49ers and released their first injury report. For the first time in several weeks, running back David Johnson did not appear on it.

However, seven players did not practice. Five were because of injuries.

Did not practice

  • DL Jonathan Bullard (foot)
  • RB Chase Edmonds (hamstring)
  • WR Larry Fitzgerald (day off)
  • LB Chandler Jones (day off)
  • DL Zach Kerr (knee)
  • LB Terrell Suggs (hamstring, back)
  • TE Maxx Williams (illness)

Suggs has been on the injury report for several weeks and still has played. The day off was probably a mix of being a day off and dealing with his injuries. With both Kerr and Bullard unable to practice, it makes more sense now why the team placed rookie Zach Allen on injured reserve. If even one is unable to play on Sunday, they would need someone else available. Miles Brown becomes that guy.

Edmonds is still unlikely to play this week but should be good for after the bye, per Kliff Kingsbury.

Another six were limited.

Limited

  • CB Tramaine Brock (hamstring)
  • OL Lamont Gaillard (thumb)
  • LB Dennis Gardeck (ankle)
  • DL Rodney Gunter (calf)
  • OL Justin Murray (knee)
  • CB Patrick Peterson (calf)

Safety Deionte Thompson, who missed the game on Sunday with a knee injury, was a full participant on Wednesday. The fact that Peterson was limited should be optimistic. Murray practiced for the first time in a couple of weeks.

49ers not planning on TE George Kittle vs. Cardinals [update]

He caught six passes for 79 yards and a touchdown when the two teams played one another two weeks ago.

The Arizona Cardinals will face the San Francisco 49ers this weekend on the road. It is the second time in three weeks they will face one another.

When they played the last time, tight end George Kittle was productive, catching six passes for 79 yards and a touchdown.

The Cardinals will not have to worry about him in Week 11.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters Kittle will not play in Week 11 against the Cardinals, tweeted Darren Urban from the Cardinals official team site.

According to the Sacramento Bee’s Chris Biderman, Shanahan told Arizona media in a conference call they “won’t have Kittle” on Sunday.

However, also according to Biderman, the team made a correction. A team representative told Biderman Shanahan misspoke on the call. Kittle is unlikely to play but has not been ruled out. Shanahan has to plan on the game without Kittle but anything could happen between now and the end of the week.

The 49ers already will be without starting left tackle Joe Staley and could be without receiver Emmanuel Sanders.

Pass rusher Ronald Blair is done for the season after tearing his ACL, while starting defensive tackle D.J. Jones will miss this week as well.

The Cardinals have given up the most receiving yards and touchdown to tight ends this season. Playing the 49ers without Kittle will be a huge break.

It doesn’t mean the Cardinals will win, but it makes the possibility more likely.

Is Kenyan Drake taking over for Cardinals?

Less than two weeks after being traded from Miami to Arizona, Kenyan Drake is already making waves. Trade: Arizona has reached agreement in principle to trade a conditional 2020 draft pick to Miami for RB Kenyan Drake, league sources tell ESPN. – …

Less than two weeks after being traded from Miami to Arizona, Kenyan Drake is already making waves.

In his first week with the Cardinals, Drake took 15 carries for 110 yards and a lone touchdown. An impressive first outing with his new team.

His Arizona debut came at the right time for him, as David Johnson, their solid back for the last few seasons was inactive.

Johnson has been battling injuries, he spent all of 2018 on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury.

Drake’s second week with the team was a true test, Johnson was back on the field, so it was a true test to see where he would fit into the mix with the incumbent starter.

In the Cardinals’ contest against the Buccaneers, Drake took over as the lead back.

The Alabama product had 10 carries to Johnson five, along with 35 yards to Johnson’s two.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury weighed in on Drake’s success with the team.

“We just felt like with Drake, needed to get something going and kept him rolling,” Kingsbury said. “The last couple weeks, practice, games [he] has brought a little pop to the run game, the pass game, and we felt like he was the guy to try and close the game out with.”

There’s still a relatively small sample size when it comes to what he’s capable of with Arizona, but with plenty of time left in the regular season, he will have the ability to show the Dolphins front office what they are missing out on.

Cardinals are double-digit underdogs to 49ers in Week 11

The banged-up 49ers are 11.5-point favorites over the 3-6-1 Cardinals in Week 11.

The Arizona Cardinals travel to Santa Clara in Week 11 to face the San Francisco 49ers for the second time in three weeks. They will do so as huge underdogs.

When the two teams played two weeks ago in Arizona, the 49ers were favored by 9.5 points.

This time, with the Cardinals on the road, they are even bigger underdogs. According to BetMGM, the 49ers are 11.5-point favorites in Week 11.

The Cardinals have begun every week this season as underdogs. Only once did they end up as favorites — in Week 3 when they faced the Carolina Panthers and Kyle Allen took over for Cam Newton at quarterback.

The 49ers are favored by that much despite having a number of key players injured. They might be missing tackle Joe Staley, receiver Emmanuel Sanders, tight end George Kittle and running back Matt Breida.

The point total is set at 45.5. The Cardinals have scored at least 25 points in five of their last six games. They have also allowed at least 25 points in every game this season.

To bet the moneyline, you can take the 49ers at -625 or the Cardinals at +445.

Cardinals place rookie DL Zach Allen on IR

He had not played since Week 4 with a neck injury.

The Arizona Cardinals have been without rookie defensive lineman Zach Allen for the last six weeks of the season. The team announced Wednesday he was placed on injured reserve, which will end his season.

To replace him on the roster, they elevated undrafted rookie defensive lineman Miles Brown.

It was a move the Cardinals were trying to avoid. According to Kliff Kingsbury, it is something the organization had discussed.

“The big thing with Zach is the reps are so valuable as a rookie,” he said on Monday. “With our bye week coming up, we’ve kind of targeted that for a while that hopefully that could be a point to get him back for the last five and get those valuable reps.”

Now Allen won’t be able to even practice.

He has not played since appearing in three snaps in Week 4 when he suffered a stinger. At some point, he had a setback and has not practiced in weeks.

What is unknown is why the decision was made to do it now. The first injury report of Week 11 was not out at the time of publishing, so it is not known if the team was going to short on players on the defensive line. Clinton McDonald was placed on IR last week and Rodney Gunter had his leg looked at during the game on Sunday, although he finished the game.

Allen began the season as a starter after getting drafted in the third round of the draft this year. He appeared in four games and finishes the season with eight tackles, one for loss and three QB hits.

Will Week 11’s Saints-Buccaneers game be broadcast in your area?

Week 11 should be a rebound game for the New Orleans Saints against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Will the game broadcast be available for you?

[jwplayer sXmBDaQ3]

The New Orleans Saints are coming off of one of their worst performances in recent memory, having been steamrolled by the lowly Atlanta Falcons last Sunday. The Saints played poorly as an entire unit, looking more like how the almost-winless Falcons were expected to perform. A stagnant offense and self-inflicted defensive penalties kept the Saints far from reach of a victory against their NFC South archrival.

Week 11 should be a rebound game for New Orleans, as they travel to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Their matchup earlier this season aside, Tampa Bay has always proven to be a tricky opponent for the Saints, especially when the Buccaneers get to play in Raymond James Stadium.

New Orleans raised a lot of questions last week about specific weaknesses within the offense, especially along the offensive line. A solid performance from quarterback Drew Brees and the rest of the offense would go a long way in assuaging any fears and questions that arose in their Week 10 outing. You will not want to miss the Saints take on the Buccaneers as they try to rebound back into the top spot in the NFC.

The broadcast map from 506 Sports highlights the coverage for each of the games during the early slate on FOX. The markets in orange will show the Saints-Buccaneers game, with Thom Brennaman and Chris Spielman on the call. The late afternoon slate, highlighted in blue, will feature the Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers. This also means that if you are in a blue zone , you will not receive any game during the early slot on FOX. Those areas in green will catch the week’s other NFC South matchup between the Atlanta Falcons and the Carolina Panthers. Finally, the majority of the country will receive the Dallas Cowboys and Detroit Lions kickoff, as denoted in red.

Loss to Buccaneers puts Cardinals in top 10 of 2020 draft

Their loss to the Buccaneers moves them to being projected to have the No. 10 pick in the 2020 draft.

The Arizona Cardinals are nowhere near the worst team in the NFL this year. However, at 3-6-1, their record says they are one of the worst. After a 30-27 loss to Sunday to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, if the season ended now, they would have a top-10 pick in the 2020 NFL draft.

They would have the 10th overall pick, as Draft Wire managing editor Luke Easterling updated this week.

Who have been the No. pick of the last few drafts?

  • In 2019, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected linebacker Devin Bush.
  • In 2018, the Cardinals selected quarterback Josh Rosen.
  • In 2017, the Kansas City Chiefs took quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
  • In 2016, the New York Giants selected cornerback Eli Apple.
  • In 2015, the St. Louis Rams (they had not yet moved back to Los Angeles) selected running back Todd Gurley.
  • In 2014, the Detroit Lions selected tight end Eric Ebron.
  • In 2013, the Tennessee Titans selected guard Chance Warmack.

The Cardinals still have six games remaining on their schedule. We will see where they ultimately end up.

Kurt Warner considers himself more of a Cardinal than a Ram

Warner told Dan Patrick he loves and respects both organizations but feels he is more a Cardinal than a Ram.

Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner made a name for himself in the NFL with the St. Louis Rams. He won a Super Bowl. He was MVP twice. He also closed out his career with the Arizona Cardinals, taking them to the Super Bowl and capping his Hall of Fame career.

It has been nearly a decade since his retirement. Appearing as a guest on “The Dan Patrick Show,” Warner was asked if he considers himself more a Cardinal or more a Ram.

The answer was a surprise.

“I would probably say a Cardinal,” Warner said. “As strange as that is and as much success and maybe the best years of my career being with the Rams, but I think a lot of it has to do with where I ended. The fact that I ended with the Cardinals, I’m still more connected with the team and the front office and stuff there. I still live in Arizona. It’s hard to say because I love both organztiaonz and both of them were about equal for my career, but I would probably say a little more with the Cardinals.”

He had his greatest successes in St. Louis. However, it was his play in Arizona that made him a Hall of Famer.

The Cardinals were quick to make sure he felt part of the organization, inducting him into their Ring of Honor and supporting his charity work.

Of course, it also easy to say now because the Rams are no longer in St. Louis, and Warner never played for them in Los Angeles.

History might remember him more for his time with the Rams, but Warner identifies more with the Cardinals.

We’ll take it.
