Michigan State Basketball rises to No. 16 in AP Top 25 Poll

Michigan State basketball is back in the AP Poll top 25 rankings at the no. 16 spot. Read more information about MSU’s placement here.

Michigan State basketball ranks no. 16 in the AP Poll Top 25 for the second time this season. Most recently, the Spartans completely dropped out of the top 25 for the first time all season. Now, MSU is right back in the mix where it belongs.

There is only one other Big Ten team in front of the Spartans in the top 25 rankings and that is Maryland. Funny enough, the Spartans just handled the Terpins in an intense Big Ten road game. Note, MSU now ranks ahead of Iowa, Ohio State, Penn State, Illinois, Wisconsin, and Michigan. The Big Ten is all over this most recent top 25 poll.

Michigan State is back in action tomorrow, Tuesday, against Penn State on ESPN. Catch the game live at 7 P.M. Stay with us on SpartansWire for plenty more coverage to come.

Michigan State rises to No. 24 in USA TODAY Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll

Despite only winning one game in the last week against Nebraska, Michigan State has risen up the Coaches and AP Men’s Basketball Polls.

[jwplayer VB85ub5l]

After a week in which Michigan State beat the lowly Nebraska Cornhuskers by double digits on the road, the Spartans have risen up the USA TODAY Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, heading up the poll by one spot to number 24 where they are now tied with Arizona.

MSU is also ranked at the number 24 spot in the AP Poll, but they hold that position exclusively in the eyes of the Associated Press.

This is a perfectly fair position for the Spartans to be in at this point as they’ve certainly had some stumbling blocks of late, particularly with a home loss to the 22-5 Maryland Terrapins.

Michigan State will have every opportunity to rise up the rankings to end the season. Their last four games will all be played against ranked opponents as they face Iowa, Maryland, Penn State, and Ohio State to close out the regular season.

The first of those match-ups will come on Tuesday when they face Iowa at home.

Michigan State Basketball drops out of AP Poll Top-25 for first time this season

Michigan State Men’s Basketball has fallen out of the AP Poll for the first time this season after starting the year at No. 1.

Sigh. Oh, how the mighty have fallen. After starting the season as the unanimous No. 1 team in the country Michigan State Men’s Basketball has officially fallen out of the AP Poll top-25 after recent losses to Michigan, Penn State, Indiana, and Wisconsin.

According to Kyle Austin of MLive, this is just the second time in NCAA history (with the last time coming in 1968) that the preseason No. 1 team has fallen out of the AP Poll top-25.

While they did not quite make the cut, they still received the most votes of any team that was not included in the top-25. The Spartans received 124 votes in total.

I personally think this is a little bit of a dramatic overreaction by the poll, and MSU is still in the top-25 of the Coaches Poll. Michigan State will immediately get back into that top-25 zone if they can knock off Illinois on the road tomorrow in a huge Big Ten match-up.

Notre Dame Football: Final AP Poll Rankings

Navy of all teams ends up being the only ranked team Notre Dame beat in 2019, a 52-20 domination in November

After LSU defeated Clemson on Monday night there wasn’t much debate as to how really 1-3 would look in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll, but where might Notre Dame land was a question for Fighting Irish fans.

I went through that a bit last week and made my best guess here, where I had Notre Dame checking in at 11.

Well, the final poll is out and I was pretty close, but not perfectly on.

  1. LSU
  2. Clemson
  3. Ohio State
  4. Georgia
  5. Oregon
  6. Florida
  7. Oklahoma
  8. Alabama
  9. Penn State
  10. Minnesota
  11. Wisconsin
  12. Notre Dame
  13. Baylor
  14. Auburn
  15. Iowa
  16. Utah
  17. Memphis
  18. Michigan
  19. Appalachian State
  20. Navy
  21. Cincinnati
  22. Air Force
  23. Boise State
  24. UCF
  25. Texas

So I was wrong in having Wisconsin drop further than they ended up doing, I just thought that two losses in a row to end the year, against top-notch competition or not would see them drop further.

Perhaps the most interesting thing in the final AP Poll for Notre Dame fans isn’t that they finished 12 instead of 11 or crack the top 10, but instead that Navy of all teams ends up being the only ranked team Notre Dame beat in 2019, a 52-20 domination in November.

Ohio State Men’s Basketball falls to No. 19 in USA Today Coaches Poll

The Ohio State men’s basketball team fell seven spots, from No. 12 to No. 19, in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll Monday.

The Ohio State men’s basketball team fell seven spots, from No. 12 to No. 19, in the USA TODAY Sports men’s basketball coaches poll on Monday.

The Buckeyes are in the midst of a four-game losing streak. And while they still have dominant wins over Villanova and a then-healthy North Carolina team, plus a strong win over Kentucky, this current skid has hurt in the eyes of the voters.

The Buckeyes are a very talented team still. And, as our own Phil Harrison pointed out this morning, there’s no reason to panic yet. Still, Ohio State fell seven spots in the Coaches Poll, and ten spots (from No. 11 to No. 21) in the AP Poll.

The Buckeyes will have a chance to right the ship on Tuesday, as they host Nebraska. After that, Ohio State travels to face Penn State on Saturday.

Gonzaga held on to the No. 1 spot in the poll, while Baylor jumped Duke for No. 2. The Big Ten has five teams in the poll, but the highest is Michigan State at No. 14.

The advanced metrics still respect Ohio State, though, as the Buckeyes sit at No. 7 in KenPom and No. 8 in ESPN’s BPI.

Oklahoma’s playoff hopes stay alive with jump to No. 7 in AP Poll

Oklahoma jumped to No. 7, making it a two-man race between the Sooners and Utah for the fourth playoff spot.

The door is open for the Sooners.

With Auburn’s 48-45 win over Alabama, Oklahoma jumped to No. 7, making it a two-man race between the Sooners and Utah for the fourth playoff spot.

Auburn jumped to No. 11 following their upset of the Crimson Tide, who dropped to No. 9 and out of the College Football Playoff race.

The Sooners defeated in-state rival Oklahoma State 34-16 with a balanced offensive and defensive effort. The Cowboys fell from No. 21 out of the top 25. No. 5 Utah beat unranked Colorado 45-15, ending their regular season at 11-1.

The Sooners are set to play No. 8 Baylor for the Big 12 Championship. The Bears jumped Minnesota and Alabama to No. 8, setting up a potential auto-bid into the CFP for the Big 12 title.

Utah will face-off against No. 13 Oregon, who has two losses on the season. If the Utes win, it could come down to resume for the fourth spot. If they lose, it will effectively eliminate the Pac-12 from title contention.

Oklahoma and Baylor play at 11 a.m. in Arlington, and the Ducks and Utes play at 7 p.m. in Santa Clara, California, both on Saturday.
