Alabama checks in at No. 3 in preseason AP Poll for 2020

The 2020 season’s initial AP Poll was released on Monday, and the Alabama Crimson Tide checked in at No. 3 behind Clemson and Ohio State.

For the first week of the upcoming college football season, the AP Poll will look like any other season. With every team having a chance to be represented, regardless of whether or not that team is actually playing in 2020.

The second week will look different, however, as those teams from major conferences such as the Big Ten and Pac-12 fall by the wayside as a result of the cancelation of their respective seasons due to COVID-19.

With all that being said, the initial AP Poll has officially been released, and, at least for now, the Alabama Crimson Tide checked in at No. 3 behind Clemson and Ohio State.

As the SEC Network pointed out, there are seven teams from the Southeastern Conference listed in the preseason AP Poll, including Alabama, Georgia (No. 4), LSU (No. 6), Florida (No. 8), Auburn (No. 11), Texas A&M (No. 13) and Tennessee (No. 25).

Unfortunately, eight of the teams included have already canceled fall sports in 2020, so expect major changes to this once Week 2 rolls around. Until then, enjoy what could have been.

As for the rest of the Big 12, three other teams made the top 25. Oklahoma (No. 5) is the highest-ranked conference team, Oklahoma State (No. 15) is a preseason top 25 team for the first time since 2017, and Iowa State (No. 24) rounds off the conference teams.

Despite not having seasons, six Big Ten and three Pac-12 teams are ranked. Once the college football season begins on Sept. 12, schools from the two conferences will drop out of the poll.

CFN predicts Texas to debut in AP preseason poll at No. 9

CFN attempted to predict what the initial AP Poll will look like, only having five conferences available. The Longhorns came in at No. 9.

The 2020 football season is going to be a different one, with the Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West, and MAC canceling their fall seasons. Because of that, the AP Poll is going to look different, only composing of teams from six conferences.

College Football News attempted to predict what the initial AP Poll will look like, only having ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, American, Conference USA, and Sun Belt available for selection.

Texas made it into the top 10, coming in at No. 9. This would be the second year in a row the Longhorns will be a preseason AP top 25 team, also coming in at No. 9 last season.

Here are CFN’s full top 25 predictions:

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia

  5. Florida
  6. Oklahoma

  24. Baylor
  25. Navy

Three other Big 12 teams make the top 25, with Oklahoma being the highest at No. 6. Iowa State sits comfortably at No. 17 while Baylor sneaks in at No. 24.

A surprise in the poll is no Oklahoma State, who is expected to contend for a spot in the Big 12 championship game. The Cowboys are set to be one of the most explosive offenses in the conference, with Spencer Sanders, Chuba Hubbard, and Tylan Wallace leading the way.

Outside of the Big 12, legendary Texas head coach Mack Brown and North Carolina nearly crack the top 10 at No. 11. The Tar Heels are coming off a 6-6 season but sophomore quarterback Sam Howell could be one of the best in the ACC.

The official AP poll will come out on Aug. 24.

Texas Football: Top 10 in 247Sports AP poll prediction

247Sports has projected the new preseason AP top 25. For what would be the second season in a row, Texas found itself in the top 10.

247Sports has projected the new preseason AP top 25 after the Big Ten and Pac-12 decided to cancel their season. For what would be the second season in a row, Texas found itself in the top 10.

Last season, the Longhorns failed to meet up to the top 10 expectations, finishing 8-5 and without a Big 12 championship appearance. Now, Tom Herman and new coordinators Mike Yurcich and Chris Ash will be looking to find some type of consistency.

Here is what 247Sports had to say about the Longhorns.

“Remember, we’re projecting here, so this is an attempt to gauge just how fond of the Longhorns AP voters are this month. Face it, there’s a lot to like. This is Tom Herman’s deepest team in his tenure and his two best players — quarterback Sam Ehlinger and safety Caden Sterns — are guys you can bank on to have difference-making seasons. A three-game stretch vs. Oklahoma, Baylor and on the road vs. Oklahoma State will determine just how good Texas is this fall.”

The Big 12 released their schedule today, mixing up the order of the Longhorns’ games. Texas will now have two bye weeks, one before the Baylor matchup and another before traveling to Kansas.

Another benefit to the new schedule is no back to back road games. The Longhorns played three out of their final five games of the 2019 season away from Austin, losing all of them.

As for the rest of the Big 12, four other teams appear in the prediction, with Oklahoma being the highest at No. 4. Baylor and TCU sneak in at No. 22 and No. 23 respectively.

Here is the full top 25:

  1. Clemson
  2. Alabama
  3. Georgia
  4. Oklahoma

Auburn football: Tigers in top 10 of 247Sports predicted AP Poll

247Sports has predicted the AP Poll now that the Big Ten and Pac-12 have canceled their seasons.

So long, Oregon and USC. Auf wiedersehen, Ohio State and Michigan.

Yes, those teams will not have a spot in the preseason AP Poll when it is released as the Pac-12 and Big Ten have opted to cancel their seasons and try to play in the spring. That means a lot of teams that wouldn’t usually be ranked prior to the 2020 college football season are going to find themselves in the top 25.

For Auburn, it wasn’t whether the Tigers would be ranked but where. In 247Sports prediction for the preseason AP Poll, Gus Malzahn’s team comes in at No. 10.

From the article:

The word: Here’s a team with major upside this fall considering the Tigers aren’t in that elite SEC group entering camp. Part of the reason is due to the departures on defense and overall uncertainty as Chad Morris arrives as Auburn’s offensive coordinator. Rising sophomore Bo Nix is a playmaker at quarterback and ability to execute will determine how far this team can climb in college football’s toughest division.

Auburn will face six teams in the predicted top 25 including four (No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia, No. 5 LSU and No. 9 Texas A&M) that are also in the top ten. Tennessee, one of Auburn’s new opponents when the SEC went to a conference-only schedule, checks in at No. 17 while Kentucky is at No. 20.

All of a sudden, the entire college football season changed, with means the entire world of rankings flips.

The Amway preseason Coaches Poll already came out, but the preseason AP ranking voters have time to adapt and adjust to our new 2020 college football normal. That means no Big Ten, Pac-12, Mountain West or MAC teams get ranked.

What will the 2020 preseason AP college football rankings look like? It’s our predicted best guess. What will the poll be – maybe – in August?

The AP college football poll is still a really big deal, even in the era of the College Football Playoff.

The AP poll still matters.

This year, it’s crazier than ever to figure it all out with no spring football or anything normal to go off of. Even so, as long as the season is still not canceled by the time it’s August, the AP preseason top 25 poll will come out.

Where did the AP have LSU before last season started? Sixth – as did the Coaches Poll.

Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, Oklahoma, Ohio State, LSU, Michigan, Florida, Notre Dame, Texas – both major preseason polls had the exact same top ten.

Where did the AP get it wrong? Michigan State at 18 was a miss, Syracuse at 22, Washington State at 23, Nebraska at 24 and Stanford at 25 were all off – but they weren’t crazy calls.

CFN Preview 2020: All 130 Team Previews

To generalize – in this year more than any other – the preseason voters will likely go off of 1) where things were at the end of last year, 2) who has the star veteran quarterbacks in place, and 3) who has the most returning starters.

This is just a prediction and not the real preseason AP top 25 poll, so don’t get mad or too happy – we’re making the best educational guess possible on a projection.

Ohio State football with more AP Poll appearances than any other program historically

According to a graphic and research shared by FOX College Football, Ohio State has appeared in the AP Poll more than any other program.

When it comes to the history of college football, Ohio State holds a candle to almost no other program. Sure, there are some that are considered in the same breath as the Buckeyes, but good luck finding one that is considered superior.

To make that point, Ohio State has the highest winning percentage of all FBS teams that have been playing long enough, is tied for the most Heisman trophies with seven, and has churned out All-Americans and NFL draft picks among the best since all of it was being measured.

And now this. According to a graphic and research done by FOX College Football, Ohio State is tops in appearances all-time in the Associated Press College Football poll with 919. Right behind OSU is Michigan with a distant 866, followed by Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Alabama.

This is just another example and metric that proves that Ohio State — if not the greatest college football program of all time — is right in the team picture.

Michigan State Basketball remains at No. 9 in the final AP Poll of the season

Michigan State basketball closes out this season at the No. 9 spot in the final AP Poll. Read some more details about this ranking here.

[jwplayer VePIeMDQ-PROpJzTY]

Michigan State basketball closes out this season at the No. 9 spot in the last AP Poll of the season. Remember, last week the Spartans finally jumped back into the top 10. This came after a rather impressive run to end the regular season, including victories over Maryland, Iowa, & Ohio State on senior day. Note, this is the third straight year in which MSU basketball closed out the season in the top 10.

Michigan State basketball moved all over the AP Poll this year. In February, the Spartans completely dropped out of the AP Poll Top-25 during a rough stretch. MSU also spent a lot of time in the No. 16 spot this year as well. Obviously, this all comes after the Spartans opened this season at the No. 1 spot for the first time ever.

Michigan State Basketball jumps back into Top 10 in latest AP Poll

The Spartans have made their way back in the AP Poll top 10 after starting the season at No. 1 and dropping out entirely at one point.

[jwplayer sexTRsqJ]

Michigan State Basketball had an epic run to end the regular season this year, blowing through Iowa, Maryland, and Ohio State on their way to a share of the Big Ten Regular Season Championship. Because of their recent success, the Spartans have jumped all the way up the national rankings. In the latest AP Poll, MSU is back in the top 10 at No. 9. They were No. 16 last week.

This is a well-deserved recognition of the Spartans’ late-season dominance and the conclusion to a crazy story about the Spartans and their national poll rankings this year.

After starting the season as the consensus No. 1 team in the country, they actually briefly fell out of the AP Poll top 25 (they did not fall out of the Coaches Poll top 25). They have now concluded the regular season in the top 10. This is a remarkable swing for a talented team who had a number of growing pains this year.
