Duke football completely drops from AP Poll after overtime loss to SMU

The Duke Blue Devils didn’t receive a vote in Sunday’s updated AP Poll after their 28-27 loss to the SMU Mustangs.

After a brief appearance with a few votes last week, the Duke Blue Devils were nowhere to be found in the updated AP Poll on Sunday.

Duke fell behind the SMU Mustangs by 14 points midway through the third quarter on Saturday night, but a pair of touchdown passes from quarterback Maalik Murphy tied the game with less than ten minutes remaining. Despite the defense intercepting SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings twice and forcing another fumble on the closing three possessions, part of a six-turnover day for the Blue Devils, two missed field goals doomed Duke to overtime.

Kicker Todd Pelino actually had a 30-yard attempt to win the game in the final three seconds, but Mustangs defensive end Jahfari Harvey jumped over the line and got his hand up for a deflection. Murphy threw another touchdown in overtime, but a failed 2-point conversion ended the upset effort.

SMU moved up two spots to 20th as they remained one of four ACC teams in the rankings. The Miami Hurricanes broke into the top five after their 36-14 victory over the Florida State Seminoles, and the Clemson Tigers (11th) and Pittsburgh Panthers (18th) also appeared.

The Oregon Ducks, Georgia Bulldogs, Penn State Nittany Lions, and Ohio State Buckeyes remained the top four teams in order.

What the AP Poll looks like after college football’s Week 9

The Southeastern Conference is represented by seven schools un this week’s college football AP Poll.

Florida football sat out during college football’s Week 9 schedule, taking its second bye of the fall ahead of one of the most grueling stretches of games imaginable. Meanwhile, the show — as always — went on with most of the nation active on the gridiron last weekend.

This week’s edition of the Associated Press Poll saw no changes among the top four teams, with the Oregon Ducks remaining perched atop the nation with 1,549 points and 61 of the 62 first-place votes. Next up are the second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, followed by the Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes, respectively, while the Miami Hurricanes snuck into the top 5.

SEC teams in AP Poll Top 25

The Texas Longhorns, who were bumped by Miami down to No. 6, are next up after the ‘Dawgs, with the Texas A&M Aggies joining them among the top 10 at No. 10. The Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 14), LSU Tigers (No. 16), Ole Miss Rebels (No. 19) and Missouri Tigers (No. 25) wrap up the top 25, giving the SEC seven schools in the upper echelon.

The Vanderbilt Commodores fell out of the top 25 but remain at a de facto No. 26 ranking with 41 votes. The Arkansas Razorbacks also earned four votes while the South Carolina Gamecocks reeled in one.

Alabama rising in latest AP Poll after blowout Missouri win

Alabama rose in the latest AP Poll after Week 9.

After an impressive 34-0 shutout win over the Missouri Tigers on Saturday, the Alabama Crimson Tide are back on the rise in the latest college football AP Poll Top 25.

Entering Week 10, the Crimson Tide are ranked No. 14 nationally in the AP Poll, which is one spot above Alabama’s No. 15 ranking from a week ago. Missouri, whom Alabama defeated Saturday in Tuscaloosa, dropped a total of four spots to No. 25 after their loss to Alabama.

Alabama’s rise in the AP Poll was also similar to their jump in the US LBM Coaches Poll, which also saw the Crimson Tide ranked No. 14 overall.

Now sitting at 6-2 overall, Alabama will not play this upcoming weekend due to a bye week, and instead will return to action November 9 on the road in Baton Rouge against the LSU Tigers. The Tigers dropped significantly in Sunday’s AP Poll entering Week 10, falling eight spots to No. 16 as a result of their road loss at Texas A&M.

Big Ten with five teams in week nine polls

The Big Ten has five programs ranked within both the US LBM Coaches and AP Poll this week.

The Big Ten once again has at least five programs ranked inside the latest polls ahead of week nine of the 2024 season.

The Oregon Ducks are the consensus No. 1 team in the country after the former top-ranked Texas Longhorns fell to the Georgia Bulldogs over the weekend. The Ducks received 59 of 61 first-place votes in the AP Poll and 51 of 53 first-place votes in the US LBM Coaches Poll

Penn State and Ohio State are ranked No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, in the latest polls, while Indiana continues to creep up the rankings. After the Hoosiers’ win over Nebraska this weekend, Curt Cignetti’s program is now ranked No. 13 in both polls.

The final Big Ten team ranked heading into week nine is the Illinois Fighting Illini at No. 20. The Illini knocked off the Michigan Wolverines this past weekend in Champaign. After falling for the third time this season, the Wolverines have now dropped out of the top 25 and did not receive any votes in either poll ahead of week nine.

Nebraska received one vote in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and AP Poll following their loss to Indiana. The Huskers were the only Big Ten to receive votes outside the top 25. In the coaches poll, Wisconsin earned a total of three voting points but did not receive any votes in the AP Poll.

Who is the new No. 1 team in the AP Poll?

Who is the new No. 1 team in the country?

Following an exciting Week 8 of the 2024 college football season, the Associated Press released their new AP Top 25 on Sunday.

After previous No. 1 Texas was defeated by Georgia, the Longhorns dropped to fifth in the rankings. The Bulldogs now sit at No. 2.

But there’s a new team atop the poll. It’s the Oregon Ducks, fresh off of a dominant 35-0 win over Purdue on Friday night. The Ducks are undefeated and in the midst of an excellent season in their first year in the Big Ten.

Of course, Oregon is quarterbacked by [autotag]Dillon Gabriel[/autotag], formerly of UCF (2019-2021) and Oklahoma (2022-2023) and is surging under third-year head coach Dan Lanning.

After a second-straight embarrassing loss, the Oklahoma Sooners failed to receive a single vote to be included in the Top 25. OU fell at the hands of South Carolina by a final score of 35-9.

A total of nine SEC teams make up the AP Top 25, with four of those teams (Ole Miss, Missouri, Alabama and LSU) making up the rest of Oklahoma’s conference schedule.

The Sooners will try their best to hang with the Rebels next week away from home. They’ll play just their second true road game of the season on Saturday in Oxford, Mississippi.

AP voter omitted ranking Notre Dame football, apologizes for mistake

How did this happen?

We all make mistakes, and on Sunday, [autotag]Kate Rogerson[/autotag] of ABC 11 in North Carolina made a big one regrading Notre Dame football.

As a voter for the AP Poll, Rogerson omitted the Irish from her top-25 and heard from it on social media. She quickly realized her error after the ND Football Discord called her out on the mistake.

Rogerson said that she would have ranked Notre Dame at No. 13, which was lower than where they ultimately placed at No. 11. It might not have mattered much anyways, as the Irish trailed the No. 10 team Tennessee by almost 60 points in the poll.

While she may have missed putting Notre Dame in her rankings this week, you can bet that Rogerson won’t make the same mistake going forward. Especially considering the Irish play Navy this weekend, who is ranked in both the AP Poll and the US LBM Coaches Poll.

Duke football on the verge of the top 25 in newest AP Poll for Week 9

After six wins in their first seven games, the Duke Blue Devils received some votes in Sunday’s AP Poll.

After beating the Florida State Seminoles for the first time ever on Friday night, the Duke Blue Devils only need to pass four more teams to reach the top 25 of the AP Poll.

The Associated Press released its updated rankings for Week 9 on Sunday, and the Blue Devils received two votes across all ballots. Among teams outside of the rankings, only Washington State, Syracuse, and UNLV received more, making Duke the unofficial No. 29 team.

Through seven games in the Manny Diaz era, the Blue Devils have six wins after the FSU victory and a 20-point comeback against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Duke also overcame second-half deficits against Northwestern and Connecticut.

The same four ACC teams remained inside the top 25 after eight weeks of the season. The Miami Hurricanes (sixth) and Clemson Tigers (ninth) appear destined for a battle in the conference championship game, but the Pittsburgh Panthers (19th) and SMU Mustangs (22nd) have a combined 12-1 record with no ACC losses.

Here’s how the AP Poll Top 25 looks after Week 8 shakeup

Vanderbilt sneaks into the AP Poll this week to give the SEC nine schools among the top 25.

Week 8 of the 2024 college football campaign was a fun one for the fans as once again the top end of the rankings saw a bit of an overhaul following some surprising results.

As it is wont to be, the Southeastern Conference again found itself in the thick of the drama with some of its top schools battling it out on the gridiron this Saturday. The results from those clashes sent a ripple throughout the national landscape and from it emerges a new top team.

The Associated Press Poll Top 25 is headlined by the Oregon Ducks, who sit perched atop the nation with 1,523 points and 59 first-place votes. The spot was opened up by the now-second-ranked Georgia Bulldogs, who beat the previous No. 1 Texas Longhorns last Saturday and now hold two first-place votes; UT fell to fifth in the rankings.

The Penn State Nittany Lions and Ohio State Buckeyes fill in the remaining third and fourth spots, respectively, in the AP Poll’s top five.

SEC teams in AP Poll Top 25

After eight weeks of play, the SEC now boasts nine member schools among the top 25 teams, with the Tennessee Volunteers (No. 7) and LSU Tigers (No. 8) rounding out the top 10 along with the ‘Dawgs and ‘Horns.

The Texas A&M Aggies (No. 14), Alabama Crimson Tide (No. 15), Ole Miss Rebels (No. 18) and Missouri Tigers (No. 21) continue to represent the conference while the Vanderbilt Commodores snuck in at No. 25 this week after a surprisingly strong season so far. No other schools earned votes.

Alabama plummets in latest AP Poll after Tennessee loss

Alabama drops in the AP Poll after a road loss at Tennessee.

After seeing a significant drop in the latest US LBM Coaches Poll earlier on Sunday afternoon, the Alabama Crimson Tide have now also fallen notably in the latest AP Poll as well.

Going into Knoxville ranked as the nation’s No. 7 team, Alabama lost to the rival No. 11 Tennessee Volunteers by a final score of 24-17, and as a result of this defeat, dropped eight spots in the Week 9 AP Poll on Sunday down to No. 15.

The Volunteers also rose as a result of their victory over Alabama, jumping four spots up to No. 7.

Now sitting at 5-2 overall for the season, as well as 2-2 in SEC play, this new No. 15 ranking for Alabama is certainly unfamiliar territory for the program, especially as we approach the month of November.

However, the good news is you don’t have to wait long for Alabama to have a chance to improve that ranking, as the Crimson Tide will play host to No. 21 Missouri on Saturday. Alabama will also travel to No. 8 LSU on November 9 after a bye week.
