Anthony Davis loses out on 2024 Olympics Best Defensive Player award

It looks like perhaps Anthony Davis continues to be disrespected when it comes to individual awards.

Although he didn’t score a lot of points at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Anthony Davis made a significant impact off the bench for Team USA men’s basketball. He concentrated almost solely on defense and rebounding, and he therefore gave the team a lift on a consistent basis when he would enter the game.

In the gold medal contest versus France, he had four blocked shots, two steals and nine rebounds in 20 minutes as the United States won 98-87 and claimed the gold medal. It was Davis’ second Olympic gold medal after he had been a member of Team USA in 2012.

Overall, he averaged 8.3 points, 6.7 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals a game in this year’s Summer Games. However, he may have gotten snubbed when Aleksa Avramovic of Serbia won the Best Defensive Player award.

This may have reminded some of how Davis didn’t win enough votes to be a finalist for the Defensive Player of the Year award this past season in the NBA.

Ultimately, this may serve as even more motivation for him to build on what may have been the best season of his career as he heads into the 2024-25 campaign.

Andre Iguodala: Anthony Davis was an unsung hero for Team USA

Don’t underestimate Anthony Davis’ role in helping Team USA men’s basketball win the gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

In the wake of Team USA men’s basketball winning a fifth straight Olympic gold medal, a lot of the credit has gone to its trio of aging superstars: Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and MVP LeBron James.

James had a triple-double in the semifinal round to help rescue the squad after it fell behind by as many as 17 points to Serbia. He then had 14 points, 10 assists and six rebounds on Saturday to help it outlast France to clinch the gold.

But this iteration of Team USA had stars everywhere, including deep on its bench. Los Angeles Lakers superstar big man played a key role off the bench, and Andre Iguodala, who won a gold medal with Team USA in 2012, called Davis, along with the Phoenix Suns’ Devin Booker, an unsung hero for the United States.

Davis had eight points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals in 20 minutes versus France on Saturday. Throughout the Olympics, he selflessly embraced a role in which he almost disregarded his own offense and focused primarily on defense and rebounding.

As a result, he now owns two Olympic gold medals, and he could very well earn a third one in the 2028 Summer Games, which will be held in Los Angeles.

Anthony Davis says he thinks he will play in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles

We may see Anthony Davis represents the United States in the Olympics again.

The basketball competition in the 2024 Summer Olympics is now in the books, and as plenty expected, the United States won the gold medal with a 98-87 victory over France in the final round.

LeBron James was excellent throughout group play and the knockout round, and he was named the MVP of basketball competition at the Olympics. His Los Angeles Lakers superstar teammate Anthony Davis played a key role off the bench, especially defensively and on the boards.

While it seems almost certain that this will be the 39-year-old James’ last go-around in the Olympics, Davis said he thinks he will suit up for Team USA again in the 2028 Summer Games.

The 2028 Summer Games will be held in Los Angeles, which would give Davis a nice opportunity to get some adulation from the hometown crowd. He will be 35 years of age then, which would likely make it his last appearance in the Olympics.

The superstar big man earned his second Olympic gold medal on Saturday. He had previously played on the 2012 iteration of Team USA along with James and late Lakers legend Kobe Bryant.

Watch: Team USA men’s basketball receives gold medals after beating France

Saturday was an emotional and proud moment for Team USA men’s basketball, as its members received their Olympic gold medals.

There is no feeling like winning an NBA championship. However, the same is true of winning an Olympic gold medal, even if it is a different feeling altogether.

LeBron James and Anthony Davis of the Los Angeles Lakers, as well as their Team USA mates got to experience that feeling on Saturday by defeating France 98-87. James and Davis had their usual strong performances, while Golden State Warriors superstar Stephen Curry was outstanding with 24 points and eight 3-pointers.

Once the game ended, the members of Team USA men’s basketball received their gold medals in what had to be an incredibly emotional moment for them. You can watch the video here, via NBC Sports.

James now has three Olympic gold medals, to go along with a bronze medal he earned in 2004. Davis, meanwhile, now has two Olympic gold medals of his own.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis highlights: Team USA wins gold medal

LeBron James and Anthony Davis played excellent basketball on Saturday as Team USA men’s basketball won yet another Olympic gold medal.

Going into the 2024 Summer Olympics, plenty of critics were concerned that Team USA men’s basketball was ripe for an upset loss. They felt the squad had shown multiple vulnerabilities during its exhibition games and that it had holes that would get exposed.

But for most of the last fortnight, it has been simply impressive. Even when it fell behind against Serbia by as many as 17 points in the semifinal round on Thursday, it exploded in the fourth quarter and played impressive basketball.

The United States took the court on Saturday against France with an Olympic gold medal at stake. While France was reasonably competitive โ€” it came to within three points with just under three minutes left in the fourth quarter โ€” it was no match for Team USA.

Team USA emerged victorious, 98-87, and claimed its fifth consecutive Olympic gold medal. LeBron James had another excellent performance with 14 points, 10 assists, six rebounds, two steals and one blocked shot.

As he has for the last several weeks, Anthony Davis did a nice job of sparking the United States off the bench. On Saturday, he had eight points, nine rebounds, four blocked shots and two steals in 20 minutes.

For France, San Antonio Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama had 26 points and seven rebounds

This was James’ third Olympic gold medal, while Davis claimed his second gold medal in Olympic competition.

Anthony Davis praises two fellow Team USA stars after win versus Serbia

Anthony Davis had just one shot attempt in Team USA’s Thursday win over Serbia, but he gave two of his teammates shout-outs afterward.

For much of Thursday’s semifinal game against Serbia, Team USA men’s basketball looked to be in lots of trouble. It fell behind by as many as 17 points and trailed by 13 going into the fourth quarter, and the concerns critics had about the squad coming into the Olympics seemed to be manifesting.

But the team turned it on in a big way and rallied for a 95-91 win. It will now play France for the gold medal on Saturday.

Los Angeles Lakers superstar Anthony Davis had a quiet outing with four points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal in just 10 minutes. But he didn’t exactly complain about his lack of playing time or the fact that he had just one shot attempt.

Instead, he praised Joel Embiid and Stephen Curry for carrying the United States’ scoring load en route to victory.

Embiid, who has often played poorly in the Olympics this summer, had 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting. Curry, meanwhile, had one of the more remarkable performances in men’s Olympic basketball history with 36 points on 12-of-19 field-goal shooting and 9-of-14 from 3-point range, as well as eight rebounds.

Davis’ fellow Lakers superstar LeBron James was also instrumental in the win. The 39-year-old had a triple-double with 16 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

Davis has admitted he has embraced an unselfish attitude during the Summer Games by focusing mainly on defense and rebounding. The selflessness the entire team has shown could very well result in its fifth straight Olympic gold medal this weekend.

Colin Cowherd does a 180 on Anthony Davis, calls him NBA’s second-best big man

Lakers superstar big man Anthony Davis has apparently won over sports commentator Colin Cowherd with his continually excellent play.

Although Anthony Davis has been an incredible big man for many years now and just completed arguably the best season of his life, he still has many critics.

People in the national media continue to take shots at him and accuse him of being lazy, soft and unmotivated. Never mind the fact that he averaged 24.7 points, 12.6 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.3 blocked shots a game while improving his free throw and 3-point accuracy and playing in a career-high 76 games this past season.

Davis has also looked good with Team USA so far this summer as it looks to capture a fifth straight Olympic gold medal.

It has led Colin Cowherd to admit on his podcast that he has drastically changed his stance on the big man.

“I was so anti-A,D. when we started doing this podcast together,” Cowherd said to Jason Timpf. “… I’m like, ‘It’s a dad bod, he doesn’t work out, he’s out of shape, he never plays hurt.'”

In fact, Cowherd said he considers Davis arguably the NBA’s second-best big man, second only to Nikola Jokiฤ‡.

“Take Jokic out โ€” I’m not sure there’s a big guy I’d take over him, including Giannis [Antetokounmpo]. You cannot mistake Anthony Davis in a game. (He’s a) dominant defender. He’s gotten significantly more physical to me. I don’t know what happened.

“This is the A.D. we thought we were getting out of college, and he just wasn’t emotionally ready for it.”

If nothing else, the Olympics and the exhibition games preceding it have been a reminder to Lakers fans that Davis is a beast, and that he still has a very spry fellow superstar in LeBron James.

Just imagine the damage they could do this coming season if the Lakers could somehow upgrade the roster around them.

Anthony Davis says he’s 100% after injury scare on Wednesday

Lakers superstar big man Anthony Davis seems to be OK after it looked like he tweaked his ankle in Team USA’s win over South Sudan.

On Wednesday, Team USA basketball punched its ticket to the quarterfinals of the 2024 Summer Olympics with a relatively easy win over South Sudan. It had squeaked past South Sudan nearly two weeks ago in an exhibition game, but now, it is starting to look like the squad people envisioned from the beginning.

In Wednesday’s game, head coach Steve Kerr benched Joel Embiid and placed Los Angeles Lakers superstar big man Anthony Davis in the starting lineup to replace Embiid. But Davis had to endure an injury scare when it looked like he had possibly hurt his ankle.

Fortunately, he said he was “100%” afterward.

Davis had eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal on Wednesday. Prior to being moved into the starting lineup, he had been a big spark plug off the bench.

Team USA will next face Puerto Rico in group play on Saturday.

LeBron James, Anthony Davis highlights from USA win over South Sudan

Team USA again looked robust during group play as it easily beat South Sudan thanks to contributions from LeBron James and Anthony Davis.

On July 20, Team USA men’s basketball faced South Sudan, a relatively undermanned squad, in an exhibition game. It was facing an embarrassing defeat until LeBron James saved the day with the game-winning shot in the final seconds.

On Wednesday, the two teams faced off again, this time in official group play. This game was a much different story, as the United States didn’t take long to get out to a sizable lead, and it maintained that advantage en route to a 103-86 victory.

It spread the wealth around, as six players scored in double figures. LeBron James filled up the stat sheet with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, seven rebounds and five assists. However, he did have six turnovers.

But he did provide some highlights for the fans in attendance in Paris.

Anthony Davis chipped in eight points, seven rebounds, three assists, two blocked shots and one steal in 19 minutes, and as usual, he made his impact felt.

With this win, Team USA clinched a spot in the quarterfinal round. It will next play Puerto Rico on Saturday, Aug. 3.

Davis is a hot commodity with over 30 offers from top schools such as Auburn, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Oregon, Penn State, Texas, Texas A&M and USC. A lot of competition for his commitment.
