March Madness: Alabama vs. UCLA odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Alabama Crimson Tide vs. UCLA Bruins odds and lines, with March Madness Sweet 16 picks and predictions.

The second-seeded Alabama Crimson Tide (26-6) face the 11th-seeded UCLA Bruins (20-9) in an East Region Sweet 16 game Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. ET at Indianapolis’ legendary Hinkle Fieldhouse and will be aired on TBS. Below, we analyze the Alabama-UCLA odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

The Crimson Tide enter on an 8-game win streak. Alabama beat 15th-seeded Iona 68-55 in the first round and No. 10 seed Maryland 96-77 in the second round, going 1-1 ATS. The Tide didn’t cover as 17-point favorites in the opener but covered as 6-point favorites against the Terps. For the season, G Jaden Shackelford leads four ‘Bama players in double figures with 14.3 PPG. In the tourney, the sophomore is averaging a team-high 15.5 PPG and senior G John Petty Jr. has 15.0 PPG.

UCLA entered the Big Dance on a 4-game skid and had to play an extra tourney game as it drew a First Four assignment. Behind sophomore guards Johnny Juzang (22.3 PPG last three games) and Jamie Jaquez Jr. (16.7 PPG), the Bruins are 3-0 SU/ATS in the NCAA Tournament, winning twice as underdogs. They needed overtime to beat Michigan State 86-80 as 2.5-point dogs in their opener, followed with a 73-62 first-round victory over 3.5-point favorite BYU and, as 5.5-point favorites, squashed the dreams of “Cinderella” Abilene Christian 67-47 in the second round.

Alabama is ranked No. 5 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports. UCLA, which finished fourth in the Pac-12, hasn’t been ranked since the week of Feb. 8, when it was No. 24.

The winner advances to an Elite Eight matchup Tuesday against either top-seeded Michigan or No. 4 seed Florida State, who also play Sunday.

Against the spread (ATS)

UCLA +6.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Excluding SEC runner-up and Sweet 16 team Arkansas, UCLA will be the toughest opponent Alabama will have faced up to this point.

Expect a game of runs that turns into a nip-and-tuck battle down the stretch. In the end, ‘Bama will prevail and move on to the Elite Eight as it’s the better offensive team.

ATS records: Alabama 18-13-1 | UCLA 15-14

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the OVER 145.5 (-110) with a HALF-UNIT play. Alabama has averaged 80.4 PPG across its last five contests, which were all elimination games, either in the SEC Tournament or the NCAA tourney.

In its last game, Alabama scored 96 points against defensive-minded Maryland. Before that outing, the Terrapins had only allowed 64.6 PPG for the season.

Alabama vs. UCLA odds: Crimson Tide slight favorites in Sweet 16

Previewing Sunday’s Alabama vs. UCLA odds and lines during their March Madness Sweet 16 matchup.

The 11-seed UCLA Bruins (20-9) meet the 2-seed Alabama Crimson Tide (26-6) at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Sunday for a 7:15 p.m. ET tip-off on TBS in the East Region.

Below, we’re taking an early look at the March Madness Sweet 16 UCLA-Alabama odds and lines. Don’t forget to check out all of the remaining teams’ March Madness odds, and check back later in the week for our full Sweet 16 breakdowns, picks and predictions.

The Bruins finished the regular season on a three-game losing skid, and they lost in the opening game of the Pac-12 tourney. Not much was expected from them, as they were forced to play their way in from the First Four.

They snuck by Michigan State 86-80 in overtime Thursday as 2.5-point underdogs. They were once again underdogs in the first round, and they managed to keep BYU at a distance all evening to win 73-62 as 3.5-point dogs. Monday night, they took care of upstart Abilene Christian by a 67-47 count, easily covering a 5.5-point number.

Alabama, the SEC regular-season and tournament champ, pushed past Rick Pitino’s scrappy Iona squad in the first round, but failed to cover the 17-point spread. The Crimson Tide didn’t have much trouble against Maryland in the second round and powered past the Terps with 96 points, their most since a 115-point explosion against Georgia Feb. 13. Alabama has won both of its NCAA Tournament games by an average of 16.0 points per game.

March Madness: Alabama vs. Maryland odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Monday’s Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Maryland Terrapins odds and lines, with March Madness Round 2 picks and predictions.

The Alabama Crimson Tide (25-6) take on the Maryland Terrapins (17-13) in an East Region second-round game Monday night. The second-seeded Crimson Tide and 10th-seeded Terrapins will tip off at 8:45 p.m. ET at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. Below, we analyze the Alabama-Maryland odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Alabama followed up its SEC tourney title with a 68-55 NCAA first-round triumph over Iona. The Crimson Tide have won seven straight and have outscored opponents by 11.9 points per game over that stretch. UA launches a ton of 3’s (29.9 per game to rank fourth nationally), but was just 5-for-16 (31.3%) Saturday. In eight neutral-site games this season, the Tide shot a mere 31.5%.

Maryland, which was under .500 in Big Ten play at 9-11, defeated Connecticut 63-54 in a convincing for a first-round victory Saturday. The Terrapins outshot the Huskies 51.2% to 32.3%. Maryland ended the regular season with disappointing losses to Northwestern and Penn State. Save for below-average metrics in offensive rebounding and forcing turnovers, the Terps have posted solid overall numbers and are on a decent trend line.

Alabama vs. Maryland: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Alabama 71, Maryland 64

Money line (ML)

Both teams are loaded with young talent, but a senior-laden Alabama frontcourt figures to cause havoc on the offensive boards and get more inside looks in this match-up. The Tide’s tremendous perimeter defense is icing on the cake.

Take ALABAMA (-250).

Play our new, free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The factors you’d want to see from a Maryland side are the ability to score single points (getting to the foul line), put-back points, or transition points. None of those figure as check marks on the Terps side of the ledger. Counting on triples against an Alabama defense, which has held foes to a 25.5% mark from beyond the arc since Feb. 1, is a fool’s errand.

Back the CRIMSON TIDE -5.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

The Under is 6-1 in the Terps’ last seven, and it’s 4-1 in UA’s last five neutral-site games.

Alabama plays at a fast pace (although a much toned-down pace of late). Maryland plays at a slow pace. Both sides have significant Under trends when playing clash-of-style games.

Take the UNDER 138 (-110).

March Madness: Alabama vs. Iona odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Alabama Crimson Tide vs. Iona Gaels odds and lines, with March Madness Round 1 picks and predictions.

The 2-seed Alabama Crimson Tide (24-6) face the 15-seed Iona Gaels (12-5) at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis Saturday for a 4 p.m. ET tip-off. Below, we analyze the Alabama-Iona odds and lines, with March Madness NCAA Tournament picks and predictions.

Alabama has been playing tremendous basketball lately, culminating in a SEC conference tournament title against LSU. They have won six in a row overall, while covering four of the past five outings. The Volunteers are also a solid 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS across their past 10 games against teams in the NCAA Tournament field, so they’re battle tested.

The big story for Iona is the man at the helm, as head coach Rick Pitino leads his fifth different school to the NCAA Tournament. Iona ran through the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tourney, winning four games in five days while going 3-0-1 ATS. They’re also on a six-game win streak, while going 5-0-1 ATS, dating back to their last loss on Feb. 17 at Quinnipiac. The Gaels didn’t face a team in the NCAA Tournament during the regular season or conference tournament.

Alabama vs. Iona: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Alabama 85 Iona 63

Money line (ML)

Alabama (-2500) is heavily favored to win this one, and it’s hard to envision many scenarios where that doesn’t happen. But Ohio State served as a cautionary tale on Friday as to why you do not play giant money lines. AVOID.

Play our new, free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

ALABAMA -16.5 (-110) is a tremendous play laying the points, even though Iona +16.5 (-110) is 5-0-1 ATS across its past six games. The Gaels are undersized and will struggle mightily against the Crimson Tide, who are strong down low but also a decent 3-point shooting team, too. The Tide are also 4-1 ATS across the past five as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 146.5 (-110) is the lean, mostly because of Alabama’s high-octane offense. The Tide have posted 79.6 PPG, which ranked 31st in the regular season. Iona closed the regular season on a 5-1 Over run, although the Over hit just once in their four games in the MAAC tourney. The Gaels might have difficulty scoring against Bama’s solid D, so only go lightly on the Over.

Alabama vs. Iona odds: Crimson Tide expected to roll in Round 1

Previewing Saturday’s Iona Gaels vs. Alabama Crimson Tide odds and lines during their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The 15-seed Iona Gaels (12-5) meet the 2-seed Alabama Crimson Tide (24-6) Saturday, March 20 for a first-round game in the East Regional at the Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET and will be airing on TBS.

Below, we look at the early March Madness Round 1 matchup Iona-Alabama odds and lines. Will one of these teams end up as this year’s National Champion? Don’t forget to check out all of the teams’ March Madness odds.

Legendary head coach Rick Pitino has led the Gaels to the NCAA Tournament, the fifth school he has helped to the Big Dance.

The Gaels needed to win four games in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament, and they did just that, dispatching Quinnipiac, Siena, Niagara and Fairfield in the final while going 3-0-1 ATS during the run.

Iona has won six in a row overall, and they’re 5-0-1 ATS during the span dating back to Feb. 17, their last loss at Quinnipiac. Overall, Iona went 11-5-1 ATS against the spread this season.

The Gaels will be making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. They fell to North Carolina in the first round in 2019, 88-73. They have lost 13 straight games in the Big Dance since their lone win over Holy Cross in the first round back in 1980.

Alabama topped LSU 80-79 in the SEC Tournament Final and they secured a two-seed as a result. They have won six in a row since its last setback at Arkansas on Feb. 24, and they’re 4-1 ATS across the past five outings.

The Crimson Tide used a combination of high scoring (79.6 PPG) and solid defense (70.3 PPG) to pick up 24 wins, a regular-season conference crown and the league tourney trophy.

They’re also one of the top units defensively against the three, allowing opponents to hit just 29.0 percent from behind the arc, good for 16th in the country.

Alabama has its highest seed since 2002 when they were also a 2-seed. They pushed past scrappy Florida Atlantic in Greenville, S.C. in the first round that season under head coach Mark Gottfried before falling to JUCO transfer Antonio Gates and Kent State in the second round. Yes, THAT Antonio Gates of NFL fame.

Alabama at South Carolina odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Alabama Crimson Tide at Sout Carolina Gamecocks odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The Alabama Crimson Tide (15-5 overall, 10-1 SEC) visit the South Carolina Gamecocks (5-7, 3-5) for a Tuesday evening contest at Colonial Life Arena in Columbia, S.C. Tip-off will be at 6:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Alabama-South Carolina college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Alabama is No. 11 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

Alabama at South Carolina: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:45 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Alabama -300 (bet $300 to win $100) | South Carolina +240 (bet $100 to win $240)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Alabama -6.5 (-110) | South Carolina +6.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 155.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Alabama at South Carolina: Three things to know

  1. Both teams head into this game off a loss and after losing two of their last three. For the Crimson Tide, that 1-2 stretch comes on the heels of a 10-game winning streak (Dec. 22-Jan. 26). During its win streak, Alabama averaged 84.9 points per game. Over its last three games, the Tide have averaged 68.0 PPG.
  2. South Carolina’s last win in this series was Jan. 30, 2016. The Gamecocks have since lost five straight — by an average margin of eight points — to the Crimson Tide. That recent series include a 90-86 Alabama win last season. That game — Feb. 29 in Tuscaloosa, Ala. — featured a combined 50 trips to the free-throw line.
  3. Various pace measures differ, but at worst, these are two of the fastest teams in NCAA-I (hence the lofty point total). Both teams routinely play games with possession numbers getting into the mid- to high-70s. Their combined Over/Under, however, is a dead-even 16-16.

Alabama at South Carolina: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Money line (ML)

Alabama’s two recent losses — and its two recent victories with lower point totals — came against much stronger talent. South Carolina has not played a strong schedule. The Tide do have a key injury that could come into play with senior F Herb Jones (11.9 PPG, 6.0 RPG) is listed as questionable (back). ‘Bama coming off a loss should be a near-80% proposition in this contest.

THERE IS VALUE IN BACKING ALABAMA -300.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The road team is 4-1 ATS in the last five games of this series. Look for the Tide to have a monster advantage in transition and free-throw points. They are coming off an outlier game in what was still just a 3-point loss to a talented Missouri team.

Run, don’t walk to TAKE THE CRIMSON TIDE -6.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Fade the big early-season scoring numbers for Alabama, and respect the Tide’s more overlooked defensive abilities.

TAKE THE UNDER 155.5 (-110).

The No. 7 Alabama Crimson Tide (15-4) travel to meet the No. 17 Missouri Tigers (12-3) at Mizzou Arena for a noon ET tip Saturday. Below, we analyze the Alabama-Missouri college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Alabama at Missouri: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 11:15 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Alabama -155 (bet $155 to win $100) | Missouri +135 (bet $100 to win $135)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Alabama -3.5 (-110) | Missouri +3.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 152.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Alabama at Missouri: Three things to know

  1. Alabama rebounded after a loss in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge against Oklahoma, picking up a 78-60 home win over LSU last time out as 8.5-point favorites. The loss at OU was its first of the season away from home. They’re 4-1 SU/ATS in five true road games.
  2. Mizzou topped Kentucky last time out by a 75-70, completing a miracle cover as 4.5-point favorites. The Tigers are 4-2 ATS across the past six, and they have hit the Over in four consecutive outings.
  3. The Tide rank 38th in the nation with 79.8 points per game, and they’re 26th in the country in defensive field-goal percentage at 39.7. The Tigers are 97th in the country with 75.2 PPG on offense, and they’re 62nd against the three with a 30.5 3-point percentage allowed.

Alabama at Missouri: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Alabama 80, Missouri 75

Money line (ML)

ALABAMA (-155) is the play here, and not having to worry about laying the points is nice. Mizzou (+135) has fallen to some mediocre Auburn and Mississippi State sides recently, although both of those games were on the road. The Tigers haven’t lost at home since a 73-53 loss to Tennessee Dec. 30. That also happens to be the last time they were a ‘dog at home, though. Look for the Tide to come away with the solid road win and resume builder.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

ALABAMA -3.5 (-110) is the play on the road, although there is a little more risk since they have to win by more than a trey. The good news for Bama side bettors is that the Tide has covered four straight as a favorite of three or fewer points.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 152.5 (-110) is the play, although go lightly as this is a big number. The Under is 3-0 in Bama’s past three, although the Over is 3-1 in their past four on the road. Mizzou cruises in on a five-game Over run, and 5-3 in eight games overall at home.

LSU at Alabama odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s LSU Tigers at Alabama Crimson Tide odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks, tips and predictions.

The LSU Tigers (11-5 overall, 6-3 SEC) visit the Alabama Crimson Tide (14-4, 9-0) Wednesday for a 7 p.m. ET tussle at Coleman Coliseum, in Tuscaloosa, Ala. Below, we analyze the LSU-Alabama college basketball odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Alabama is No. 7 in the Ferris Mowers Coaches Poll powered by USA TODAY Sports.

LSU at Alabama: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:15 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: LSU +333 (bet $100 to win $333) | Alabama -450 (bet $450 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: LSU +8.5 (-110) | Alabama -8.5 (-110)
  • Over/Under: 163.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

LSU at Alabama: Three things to know

  1. LSU (82.9 points per game) and Alabama (79.9 PPG) rank second and third, respectively, in SEC scoring. Beginning with a 105-75 loss to the Crimson Tide Jan. 19, the Tigers have shot just 41.2% from the floor in their last four games while averaging nearly 10 fewer points than their season average. LSU has gone 1-3 in that stretch.
  2. Alabama lost a 66-61 in a non-conference game at Oklahoma Saturday. The loss snapped a 10-game win streak for the Tide. UA was a minus-4 in turnover margin after being on the plus side of the ledger in six of its previous seven games. Alabama has forced an impressive 15 turnovers per game for the season.
  3. Both sides have a key injury. LSU is without F Darius Days (12.1 points, 7.9 rebounds per game). Alabama is without F Jordan Bruner (7.8, 5.3). The 6-foot-10 Bruner has also logged 1.2 blocks per game and is a force in Alabama’s interior defensive scheme.

LSU at Alabama: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Alabama 85, LSU 73

Money line (ML)

Look for Alabama to be on the warpath after its loss to Oklahoma. The factor most likely to be overlooked in the Tide’s advantage here is their defense. The turnover transition game is a monster plus for ‘Bama and a big minus for LSU.

Still, the price here offers no value: PASS.

Against the spread (ATS)

The favorite is 19-6-1 over the last 26 games in this ancient SEC series and the favorite for this one is a solid play to cover by double digits. BACK THE CRIMSON TIDE -8.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Various analytic measures peg both LSU and Alabama as two of the higher-tempo teams in NCAA-I. ‘Bama, in fact, figures as a top-20 unit in possessions per game.

The lofty possession numbers on both sides were logged in non-conference play. Those possession numbers, along with the Tide’s 72.8% effective field-goal rate in the 105-75 score Jan. 19, are overbaked into tonight’s number. BACK THE UNDER 163.5 (-110).
