Packers players have suffered sixth-most ACL tears since 2013

Only five teams have suffered more ACL tears over the last 10 years than the Packers.

If you’re one of those people who feel like the Packers suffer more torn ACLs than other NFL teams, it turns out you’re right. Well, sort of.

According to a tweet from ACL Recovery Club, Green Bay has had the sixth most ACL tears since 2013, a 10-year stretch:

Interestingly enough, all six teams ahead of the Packers play on grass fields. This may come as a surprise to players who have pushed for the league to require grass in all NFL stadiums.

When Green Bay’s top edge rusher Rashan Gary tore his ACL last season, it occurred on the slit turf at Ford Field. Gary’s injury provoked a strong reaction from David Bakhtiari, who also exited the same game because the field conditions aggravated his surgically repaired knee.

A week after the game, Bakhtiari posted a series of tweets voicing his frustration with the NFL for allowing teams to continue to have slit turf.

Aaron Rodgers also agreed that he would like to see all teams make the switch to grass but stated that he had no faith in NFL owners coming to an agreement because the decision would ultimately come down to money.

“I don’t have a lot of confidence when it comes to the league making that decision without some sort of big vote and gripes from certain owners who don’t want to spend the money,” he said.

Halfway through the 2022 season, NFLPA president JC Tretter wrote a column stating that slit turf surfaces have statistically higher in-game injury rates compared to all other surfaces, including injuries to lower extremities and non-contact injuries.

However, NFL executive V.P. of communications, public affairs, and safety, Jeff Miller, pushed back on Trettor’s claims citing that slit turfs fields produce “2-3 more injuries per year, most of them are ankle sprains — a low-burden injury — whereas slit film also sees a lower rate of fewer high-burden ACL injuries compared to other synthetic fields.”

Judging by the data from ACL Recovery Club, it sounds like Miller might be right. The Giants are the only team in the top 10 that uses slit turf. Meanwhile, the team with the lowest number of ACL tears, the Atlanta Falcons, play on a synthetic field.

Unfortunately, ACL injuries can’t be avoided. The Packers just happen to have had pretty bad luck when it comes to ACL tears in recent years.

Hopefully, that luck will change, and they avoid such injuries in the future.

Seahawks linebacker Jordyn Brooks headed for knee surgery

Seattle Seahawks linebacker Jordyn Brooks is slated to undergo knee surgery in the next couple of days to repair his torn ACL.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll was able to provide a number of player injury updates during his final press conference of the season on Monday. Carroll said linebacker Jordyn Brooks, who suffered a torn ACL in Seattle’s win over the Jets, will undergo surgery in the next couple of days.

While Brooks’ prognosis won’t be evident until after the operation, Carroll is hopeful he won’t miss time to start next year.

“We’re going to count on him being ready to go, but I’m saying that in all optimism because they haven’t gone in and taken a look at what it looks like yet,” Carroll cautioned. “It’s a long recovery, it’s late in the year, it’s a hard race against time for him to make it, but he’s such a well-conditioned guy and he’s such a good worker and his mentality is so strong, I think he’ll get as much out of it as you can.”

Brooks truly emerged as a leader this season – his third in the NFL – and his injury was a huge blow to Seattle’s defense.

“He’s a really big factor – he needed the time, as we changed principles and stuff that he did, he needed the time to really grow with it,” Carroll said. “He was making a bunch of tackles, but he’ll be better, he’ll be much improved. Jordyn, really, he’s a centerpiece, he’s such a good player, and we’ll continue to lean on him that way.

“So, fingers crossed that he’ll make it back and be ready to go for the season.”

Seahawks DT Bryan Mone injures ACL in Seattle’s loss to 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks suffered another blow to the defensive line Week 15 when defensive tackle Bryan Mone was carted off with an ACL injury.

The Seattle Seahawks lost more than just the NFC West division title in Week 15, they could be without defensive tackle Bryan Mone going forward this season.

Mone, who got the start in place of nose tackle Al Woods, who was inactive due to a sore Achilles, suffered a knee injury in the first quarter and was ruled out shortly thereafter.

Following the loss, coach Pete Carroll provided an update on Mone’s status.

“Big Mone, he hurt his knee,” Carroll told reporters. “We can’t say everything, but it’s a significant knee injury . . . He had a legitimate knee injury. It’s an ACL injury.”

Mone was helped off the field and into the medical tent on Thursday and eventually carted off into the locker room.

More information on his condition is expected shortly, but until then, this story is continuing to develop.

How Tennessee QB Hendon Hooker’s knee injury impacts Saints’ 2023 draft outlook

Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker went down with a knee injury this week, but QB-needy teams like the Saints should still consider drafting him in 2023:

That’s no good. The 2022 college football season took a hit this week when Tennessee Volunteers quarterback Hendon Hooker went down with an ACL injury, sidelining one of the most exciting players in the country just as things were picking up with bowl season on the horizon. It’s a big loss for the sport just from an entertainment value perspective, and it’s disappointing to see it happen to a player who had really come into his own on a big stage.

And the ramifications are long-lasting. Hooker is a top prospect for the 2023 NFL draft even with this injury added to his scouting report. He’s also been frequently connected to the New Orleans Saints in mock drafts (most recently by our own Luke Easterling over at Draft Wire just last week). The Saints will be looking for a quarterback in 2023 with Jameis Winston underperforming and the 35-year old Andy Dalton playing out a one-year deal, so Hooker is likely on their radar.

New Orleans doesn’t own a first round pick in 2023 after trading it to the Philadelphia Eagles, so they won’t be able to select anyone until they’re on the clock in the second round (right now, projected at No. 41 overall). Hooker wasn’t a sure thing to go in the first round even before this injury owing to the limited offense he ran at Tennessee and his age, which is old for NFL standards; he’ll turn 25 in January, making him the third-eldest quarterback to be drafted behind John Beck (who was 26 in 2007) and Brandon Weeden (28 in 2012).

Age and injury history aren’t the biggest concerns when it comes to scouting college quarterbacks, but NFL teams commit a lot of resources towards evaluating them anyway. It remains to be seen how heavily they’ll weight against Hooker. Former Alabama Crimson Tide wide receiver Jameson Williams wasn’t able to work out for pro teams after suffering a season-ending knee injury back in January, and he only recently returned to practice, but the Detroit Lions still traded up to get him midway through the first round.

A better example might be former Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson, who suffered a similar ACL injury to Hooker back in Nov. 2017. He was able to return and start all 16 games the following season, which suggests Hooker could hope for a similar timetable. Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow ended his rookie season with a mid-November knee injury (tearing both his ACL and MCL) but he returned to start every game in 2021, leading his team to the Super Bowl.

Obviously every injury and situation is different, but we’ve seen quarterbacks overcome them before in less than a year, and there’s a good chance this doesn’t impact Hooker’s draft status much one way or another. He was probably going to be a second-day pick anyway, and that lines up with where the Saints are expecting to make their first selection. That’s not to make light of it, though. He could have really helped his case by being able to throw in front of teams and go through all of the usual athletic testing and timing drills. It’s a shame that he won’t be able to make his case to the fullest extent.

So we’ll be watching him closely in the months ahead to see how he progresses through recovery. The Saints have made no secret of drawing talent from Tennessee, including recent second-day draft picks like Alvin Kamara (third round) and Alontae Taylor (second round). They hired the Volunteers’ former wide receivers coach Kodi Burns this offseason and should have an inside track on Hooker as a prospect.

If they like Hooker but aren’t confident he’ll be healthy next September (or ready to start right away), maybe pairing him with a stopgap quarterback like Dalton or Jimmy Garoppolo in the spring could be the move. Maybe Winston is willing to stick around, though it feels like his time has run its course in New Orleans. Until the Saints know for certain that they’ve landed their next franchise quarterback, they can’t afford to stop looking for help.

Jameson Williams returns to practice with Detroit Lions today

Jameson Williams NFL debut drawing nearer by the week

The Detroit Lions organization seems to be headed in the right direction for the first time in a long time as they are riding high on a three-game win streak. Fortunately, that’s not the only great news coming out of Detroit as their 2022 first-round pick, [autotag]Jameson Williams[/autotag], practiced for the first time today.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide speedster has missed the entire season thus far after suffering a torn ACL in his final collegiate game back in January.

While it is still unknown when he will make his NFL debut, getting Williams back into the swing of things is massive for this team as they are second in the division and not completely out of the playoff race yet.

Williams has game-changing speed that the Lions’ offense desperately needs, however, they have been wise not to rush his return. Adding a key piece like Williams at a time when morale is already soaring may be enough to sneak the Lions into a wild card spot!

Detroit Lions HC gives injury update on Jameson Williams

Jameson Williams a few weeks away from NFL debut

The Detroit Lions knew they were making a long-term investment when they selected [autotag]Jameson Williams[/autotag] with the first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft. Williams was the No. 12 pick overall, however, after suffering a torn ACL in the 2021 national championship, it was expected that Williams wouldn’t see much action in 2022.

Lions head coach, Dan Campbell, gave an update on the former Crimson Tide speedster today at his press conference. When asked for a date of return Campbell said, “I would say probably after Thanksgiving sometime, I think tentatively that’s what we are looking at, I don’t know if that would be the Jacksonville week or the week after. But he is close. He’s progressing, there are no setbacks.”

The Lions have struggled mightily this year, but they have been competitive in nearly ever game. The speedy receiver may be the difference that this Lions team needs to get into NFC North contention again.

Will Danilo Gallinari ever play for the Boston Celtics?

It’s a real concern with his future with the team in question given the size and length of his deal at 34 years old.

Injured Boston Celtics veteran forward Danilo Gallinari spoke at the team’s practice this past Tuesday and remained hopeful he’ll eventually join his Celtics teammates in their push for a championship.

He isn’t sure if that’ll be during the regular season, postseason or beyond, though, which puts his future with the team in question given the size and length of his deal at 34 years old. Gallinari had to wait nearly an entire month to have surgery on his injured knee and only days ago started walking again. Free throw shooting is the next goal in his rehab journey.

CLNS Media’s Bobby Manning recently broke down Gallinari’s future with the team, as well as a little bit about how Sam Hauser has the chance to replace him in Boston’s rotations this season.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to hear what Manning has to say in full.

Celtics forward Danilo Gallinari back on his feet again, plans to travel, practice with team during ACL rehab

The veteran Boston swingman sounded optimistic about his rehab from his ACL tear so far.

Danilo Gallinari wants you to know that just because you do not see him on the court with the Boston Celtics doesn’t mean he has given up on coming back to play for the team this season.

“I’m still here and I’m going to come back, even if I’m not that young anymore, I’m going to come back stronger and better,” he explained, relating that he plans to stay close to the team (via CLNS).

Sharing that “small things are big things in the rehab process,” the Italian revealed that he’s walking again after the operation, which took place about three weeks ago. “I can’t wait to start shooting a little bit, shoot some free throws,” he suggested.

“I’m just taking it day by day,” said Gallinari. “That’s the best way to approach a rehab and to approach an injury like this is to take it day by day and not really think about what’s going to happen in the future.”

Cowboys WR Michael Gallup held himself out Week 3; aiming for return vs Commanders

“It’s really just mental now,” Gallup said of his imminent return from ACL surgery. He’s hoping more practice reps will have ready Week 4. | From @ToddBrock24f7

After a long buildup dating back to his January ACL injury, Michael Gallup looked fully set to make his return to action in Week 3 when the Cowboys played the Giants at MetLife Stadium.

Yet in the hours before kickoff, the veteran wide receiver was surprisingly left on the inactive list, prompting many to fear some sort of setback in his recovery.

Turns out, though, it was Gallup himself who made the call, saying that he wanted to be sure he was truly ready to be back on the field- not just physically, but mentally, too.

“It was my decision,” the 26-year-old said this week, per the team website.

“This is the hardest part. It’s really just mental now,” Gallup said. “You know you’re healthy and everything’s good; it’s just mental now. You’ve got to make sure you feel like your old self. Getting to that is the hardest part.”

Gallup participated in a “full slate” of practice reps last week, with an eye toward making his season debut in New York. Now he’s setting his sights on Week 4 at home versus Washington…. after a few more practices to test out the surgically-repaired knee.

“I just needed a couple more reps,” said the Colorado State product who appeared in just nine games last year after an early-season calf injury. “I’ve only been in pads twice [since the ACL injury]. Everybody else had a whole training camp and everything like that, and I just needed to feel a couple more things out.”

Gallup says watching Tampa Bay wideout Chris Godwin re-injure himself against the Cowboys in Week 1 (after his own ACL tear in December) definitely played into his decision to wait one more week before suiting up.

“That’s tough. It makes you think a little differently about your recovery.”

The real fear for Gallup, he confirmed, was that he might be rushing back too soon and putting himself at risk to miss even more time.

“We’ve got a lot of games left to play, and I’m trying to be out there the whole time,” he explained. “I’m just biding my time so that I’m good when I get back out there, so I can help my team.”

All reports are that Gallup has looked good in practice. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday that he was back to making “Gallupesque” plays.

Gallup himself translated: “Go up in the air, snag it, do what you’re supposed to do and get the toes down. That’s exactly what it was.”

It may now be coming a week later than expected, but the prognosis for No. 13 looks positive for this coming Sunday.

Take it directly from the source.

“M.G. is back,” he said. “M.G. is definitely back.”

Danilo Gallinari is almost certainly out for the season; now what for the Boston Celtics?

Where does this leave the Celtics? What options do they have regarding making up for his loss?

While it looked like a lucky break early on, we now know the knee injury suffered by veteran Boston Celtics reserve forward Danilo Gallinari is not a torn meniscus but a full-blown ACL tear. That has much more serious implications for the Italian swingman and the rotations of his new team.

Where does this leave the Celtics? What options do they have regarding making up for his loss? What can be done internally, and for how long could it be a functional plan? Would it make more sense to look outside the team via a signing or a trade? Could the Celtics get a disabled player exception after the loss?

To explore the range of options available to the team, host John Karalis of the “Locked On Celtics Podcast” breaks down the situation in his latest episode.

Take a look at the clip embedded above to get all of the details on this unpleasant situation.
