Auburn forward named to award watchlist

No SEC player has ever won the Karl Malone Trophy.

The Auburn basketball team is getting some looks before the start of the season this November.

In this case, Auburn power forward [autotag]Johni Broome[/autotag] has been named to the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year Watchlist. Entirely true to its name, the award is given at year’s end to the best power forward in the nation in Division I basketball.

Broome, who transferred from Morehead State this offseason, would be looking at a first should he win the award — no SEC player has won it in its nine years of existence thus far. He’s one of three players that will try on the watchlist, as LSU’s K.J. Williams and South Carolina’s G.G. Jackson have also been named to the watchlist. Last year’s winner was Iowa’s Keegan Murray.

The award is partially based on fan vote, where the current 20 members of the watchlist will be narrowed down to 10 and then five, after which a committee will pick the winner. Last year, Auburn’s Walker Kessler was a finalist for the award but was beat out by Murray.

Broome will get his first chance to make a bid for the award on Nov. 7 when the team tips off against George Mason for its first regular-season game of the year.

Auburn Wire’s Week 8 SEC picks

Auburn may not be in action this weekend, but other SEC teams are still set to take the field.

There won’t be any Auburn Tigers football this weekend, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be SEC football.

A few SEC teams are on bye this week, but nine of them will still be in action on Sunday. As such, the staff here at Auburn Wire will make our game selections, but we won’t be debating the Tigers’ X-factors or giving you any score predictions until the team plays Arkansas next Saturday. Last week, Contributor River Wells came out on top with a 5-1 record and both Contributor J.D. McCarthy and Regional Editor Patrick Conn placed a solid 3-3. The biggest loser last week was Site Editor Taylor Jones, who turned in a 2-4 record on his picks.

So without further ado, here are the staff’s Week 8 SEC picks for Saturday’s matchups:

10 important stats to know from Packers’ first 4 games of 2022

Some stats to know after the Packers finished the first four games of the 2022 season at 3-1.

The Green Bay Packers are 3-1 after four games and prepping for what could be a tricky four-game stretch coming up. Matt LaFleur’s team will go to London to play the Giants this week, travel home to play the New York Jets next Sunday, go to Washington in Week 7 and then to Buffalo to play the Bills in Week 8.

The numbers, for the most part, look pretty good for Green Bay to start this season.

The Packers are getting yards after the catch (628, first in NFL), running the football efficiently (5.0 yards per carry, eighth), consistently winning with four pass-rushers on defense (fifth-best pressure rate) and capturing the important situational downs (first on third down).

Here are some of the other important stats to know from the Packers’ first four games of 2022:

Packers CB Rasul Douglas off to fast start in 2022

The numbers say Packers CB Rasul Douglas is having a terrific start to the 2022 season.

Green Bay Packers cornerback Rasul Douglas isn’t slowing down after a breakout season.

According to Pro Football Focus, Douglas has allowed just 48 receiving yards over 89 coverage snaps and 12 targets. He has also recorded 7 “stops” in the passing game, which leads all corners. Douglas has the third-best coverage grade among corners with at least 38 coverage snaps.

Of the 48 yards he’s allowed in coverage through three games, 24 came on the first play of the game on Sunday in Tampa Bay.

Opposing quarterbacks are averaging 5.3 yards per completion and 4.0 yards per target against Douglas this season.

The Packers signed Douglas to a three-year, $21 million deal worth up to $25.5 million after an incredible 2021 season, in which he became a Cinderella story as a mid-season addition from the Arizona Cardinals practice squad. In 12 games, he recorded a team-high five interceptions and returned two of them for a touchdown.

Before joining the Packers, Douglas had never reached his full potential. He had an up-and-down stint with the Philadelphia Eagles, who selected him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. The Eagles ended up releasing Douglas with one year left on his rookie contract. He then spent one season with the Carolina Panthers before having very brief stints with the Las Vegas Raiders, Houston Texans, and then Cardinals.

Douglas has been able to stick in Green Bay, where he has showcased impressive ball skills, football IQ, and versatility.

During most of training camp and the first two games of the regular season, Douglas mostly played in the slot despite over 91 percent of snaps coming on the outside last season. When Jaire Alexander suffered an early groin injury against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, Douglas took his place on the outside.

Per PFF, Douglas was targeted eight times and allowed five catches for 41 yards with one pass breakup. Alexander did participate in Wednesday’s jog thru, but his status for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots is still up in the air.

Luckily, Douglas gives them some flexibility. You could make the argument that Douglas’ skill set is better suited for the outside, but his play so far shows he can also be an effective nickel. When he was primarily playing in the slot in Weeks 1 and 2, Douglas allowed just four catches totaling seven yards.

In 2022, Douglas has proven he is not one-dimensional or a one-year wonder.
