NFL Schedule: 3 late season game the Eagles could have flexed to Sunday night

NFL Schedule: 3 late season games the Philadelphia Eagles could have flexed to Sunday night

The 2022 NFL schedule has been released and the Eagles landed five prime-time matchups amid a short-term rebuild that sees the organization returning to prominence after returning to the playoffs in 2021.

One reward that comes with playing good football and being relevant late in the season is the opportunity to have a less important matchup switched out in place of a matchup with significant meaning and postseason implications.

The formula was created by the NFL to prevent fans from having to sit through meaningless football late in the season.

During the 2022 season, flexible scheduling for Sunday night may be used twice between Weeks 5–10, Weeks 11–15, and Week 17. In those select flex scheduling weeks, the games listed for the Sunday night window are tentative and subject to change.

In Week 18, two Sat. p.m. and Sun. p.m. games will be announced no later than Jan. 3.

With the Eagles facing five NFC teams in their final five and three within the division, here are the games that could be flexed to prime time.

8 NFL playoff hopefuls with the biggest risk of falling into the dreaded 0-2 hole

Only 9% of teams to start 0-2 in the Super Bowl era have made the playoffs.

No NFL team in the last three years has made the playoffs after beginning a season 0-2. It’s not that it’s impossible – 30 teams have done it in the last 32 years – but it’s highly improbable. In a league where literally every game matters, dropping two out the gate usually spells doom for how the rest of the season will go.

Overall, 265 teams have started 0-2 since 1990, according to Stathead. The 30 that made the playoffs represent just 11% of those teams. That number is down to 9% in the Super Bowl era (since 1966). Only three teams have ever gone on to win a Super Bowl after starting 0-2. The last of them was the New York Giants in 2007. Since then, the 11 teams to make the playoffs after an 0-2 start have gone a combined 5-11 in the postseason with just one reaching a conference championship game.

Teams that start 0-2 simply don’t make the playoffs, and if they do, they don’t go very far. After Thursday’s schedule release, here’s a look at the playoff hopefuls you may want to fade based on how big their risk is to start 0-2.

The Chiefs’ reign atop the AFC West could be over by Week 9

Kanas City’s opponents through Week 9 won 62% of their games in 2021.

The battle for supremacy in the AFC West is one of the most anticipated division battles in recent NFL history. The incumbent champion Kansas City Chiefs have held the title for six years now, but the Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Los Angeles Chargers did everything they could to close the gap this offseason.

The Chiefs still have the shortest odds on Tipico Sportsbook to claim the throne at +155, but the Chargers (+240) and Broncos (+260) aren’t far behind, and the Raiders have the shortest odds of any projected fourth-place team at +600. In such a deep division, the team that gets off to the best start will have an edge in winning the title. Thursday’s schedule release revealed the Broncos and Chargers as the teams with the best chances to do that.

Opponent 2021 Win % 62.50% 49.30% 42.60% 41.20%

Kansas City has the toughest early-season schedule based on opponent winning percentages from last year. They won’t play a team that had a losing record until Week 10. By comparison, the Broncos will have played four in that span, including in each of the first two weeks of the season. The Chargers will have played six. Even the Raiders get three such games. If the Chiefs aren’t somehow able to stay afloat in that time, they could easily be out of the division race halfway through the season. Overall, they have the fifth toughest schedule in the NFL.

This doesn’t mean Kansas City can’t or won’t still make the playoffs. For my money, three teams are coming out of this division. But the idea of momentum in football is simply a team finding its identity and being able to consistently impose it against other teams week to week. Going into a season without Tyreek Hill for the first time in the Patrick Mahomes era, the Chiefs may be searching for that offensive identity more than ever. And they’ll have to do it against teams that make it a little harder than others.

The Broncos, on the other hand, get a bit of a grace period while they integrate a new coach and quarterback. They open the season against the Seahawks and Texans, meaning they could potentially grow that chemistry and momentum while still winning. The Chargers could very well be 6-2 after eight games thanks to a five-game stretch where they play the Jaguars, Texans, Browns and Seahawks.

The Chiefs are still the Chiefs, so the teams on their schedule are looking at them as a tough game too. And Week 2 against the Chargers will tell us a lot about the direction of this division. But by Week 9, the Chiefs will have played on the road against the Bucs, 49ers, Cardinals and Colts, and at home against the Bills, Titans, Chargers and Raiders. If they come out of that stretch with a winning record – very possible for a perennial Super Bowl contender – they’ll be better for it down the stretch of the season. But if not, the second half of the season won’t be a matter of trying to win the division for Kansas City, it’ll be about getting a Wild Card berth.

Eagles to open the 2022 NFL season on the road against the Lions in Week 1

Philadelphia Eagles to open the 2022 NFL season on the road against the Detroit Lions in Week 1

The Eagles will have an opportunity to open the 2022 NFL regular season on a positive note, as The Inquirer’s Jeff McLane is reporting that Philadelphia will open up on the road at the Detroit Lions.

The Eagles and Lions met in 2021 on Halloween, as Philadelphia’s two-headed rushing attack of Boston Scott and Jordan Howard accounted for four touchdowns on the ground, helping the Birds dominate Detroit in a 44-6 win, that helped the team start to establish identity.

McLane is also reporting that the Eagles will face the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas Eve for the first time since 2011. The NFL will only play three games on Christmas Sunday, which will be Week 16 of the regular season.

NFL schedule 2022: The Bills should get the most primetime games (and 4 other options, like the Ravens!)

Give Josh Allen every last inch of the spotlight.

One day soon, the Buffalo Bills may finally win the Super Bowl. With Josh Allen at the helm of perhaps the NFL’s best roster on paper, they are a potential January/February inevitability.

Teams like the Bills are only capable of losing on a bad bounce. Teams like the Bills stomp out underdogs and humble other contenders, almost effortlessly. If there was one team to lock in as the Marquee Squad of the 2022 NFL season — the centerpiece — it is the Buffalo Bills.

As the NFL gets set to release its full schedule for all 32 teams later Thurdsay, they’d do well to keep the Bills front of mind. Circle those wagons!

Give them the max amount of primetime games (five). Make sure they’re on Sunday Night Football at least once a month. Aside from that, Buffalo should be playing in the national afternoon slot — with Jim Nantz and Tony Romo, or Kevin Burkhardt and To Be Determined — calling their every game.

But if the league doesn’t agree, they have other options. There are plenty of good football teams with incredible quarterbacks that could/should be in national games every week. Let’s run through them.

Philadelphia Eagles 2022 schedule: Ranking the destinations for must-see road matchups

The Eagles and 31 other teams around the NFL will find out the dates and times for their 17-game gauntlet in 2022 and the destinations this season aren’t that appealing.

With the Raiders gone from the schedule, fans lose an opportunity to visit Las Vegas, while opponents like Miami, Tampa Bay, and both Los Angeles teams (Rams, Chargers) are missing from the schedule as well, with cities like Detroit, Indianapolis, Chicago, Phoenix and Houston headlining the non-NFC East road trips.

With the NFL schedule release just one day away, here’s a ranking of road destinations based on the matchup and potential for pre and post-game fun.
