Saints projected to earn 3 compensatory draft picks again in 2022

Saints projected to earn 3 compensatory draft picks again in 2022

A year after the New Orleans Saints received three additional selections in the 2021 NFL draft, they’re predicted to do so again. The analysts at Over The Cap have come closest to cracking the NFL’s tightly-guarded code for determining comp picks, and after correctly forecasting the team would be awarded 2021 draft picks in the third round (for Teddy Bridgewater) and the sixth round (for A.J. Klein), they’re projecting a continued trend for the Saints in 2022.

Right now, OTC projects the Saints to receive a fourth rounder for Trey Hendrickson and a sixth rounder for Sheldon Rankins — in addition to the third round comp pick the Saints have already earned for Terry Fontenot in the NFL’s incentivized minority hiring policy. A handful of other teams are predicted to receive three comp picks each, while the Rams (five) and Chargers (four) pace the NFL.

In past years, Hendrickson’s $15 million per-year contract would have been a sure third round comp pick for the Saints. But that new incentives policy guarantees third-round compensation for teams who lose a minority candidate to a head coach or general manager role on another team, which pushes highly-valued contracts like Hendrickson’s down below the threshold and into the fourth round. It’s the difference between picking at No. 105 and waiting until No. 142 to make your selection.

Still, the Saints are direct beneficiaries of this policy so we can’t complain. And creating greater diversity in leadership roles across the league, better representing the population of players who are subject to their decisions, is a worthy cause deserving of those incentives. And, hey, remember: this is only a projection. Maybe the Saints end up getting a better pick for Hendrickson after all.

Last year, New Orleans used all of its compensatory draft picks to pad out trade packages while moving up the board to target specific players. They put the third rounders for Fontenot and Bridgewater together so they could leapfrog 22 spots and go get Paulson Adebo, who is competing to start Week 1.

The Saints then packaged the sixth rounder for Klein with a seventh round pick acquired from the Jaguars (for nose tackle Malcom Brown) so they could vault a dozen spots up the board, landing left tackle Landon Young — who was their highest-graded rookie in preseason, per Pro Football Focus. Even if the Saints didn’t remain in place and use all of their picks on different players, the draft-day versatility that extra ammo creates speaks for itself.

So is this signaling a philosophy shift in how the team approaches free agency and the draft? Or was this two-year trend more based in the logistics issues of struggling to keep a talented team together during a salary cap-shattering pandemic? Will the Saints get back to cooking the books once the cap recovers and goes to the moon in 2023, thanks to an influx of revenue from new broadcasting deals?

I’m guessing it’s a little of both. Even with the salary cap bouncing back two years from now, the Saints won’t be able to re-sign all of their priciest free agents — the 2022 class includes defensive cornerstones Marshon Lattimore and Marcus Williams, franchise left tackle Terron Armstead, and quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill. If any of them are signed by another team, the Saints should be poised to net another comp pick in 2023.

For the curious, here are the current list of Saints draft picks in 2022 (their initial sixth rounder was forfeited by the NFL for COVID-19 protocol violations last year):

  • Round 1
  • Round 2
  • Round 3
  • Round 3 comp (Fontenot)
  • Round 4
  • Round 4 comp (Hendrickson)
  • Round 5
  • Round 6 comp (Rankins)
  • Round 7

2022 NFL mock draft has Bengals going big in front of Joe Burrow

The Bengals get some big help in a new mock draft.

[mm-video type=video id=01fdqmrqpmfr9p4ney6t playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01fdqmrqpmfr9p4ney6t/01fdqmrqpmfr9p4ney6t-8a8adf58d143b3aaa149462d532f8411.jpg]

The Cincinnati Bengals have eyes on the regular season after finalizing a 53-man roster.

Well, most of the eyes. Rest assured the Bengals scouting department also has eyes on the college football season and the top names there as the long-term plan for the 2022 NFL draft starts to develop.

And during this lull in NFL action, mock drafts have crept into the conversation too. A new one from Draft Wire’s Luke Easterling has the Bengals picking fourth overall and selecting Alabama’s Evan Neal:

“Next year, they can’t afford to pass up on the top tackle prospect in the class. That’s Neal, and he’d immediately be the best blocker on a team that needs more than one upgrade in front of their former No. 1 pick.”

It’s not a terrible idea to go ahead and keep upgrading the line in front of Joe Burrow. And Neal is one heck of a way to do it — so far, he’s the consensus top tackle in the draft and checks in at 6’7″ and 350 pounds.

The Bengals will probably need some edge-rushing and secondary help too with premium picks. But with rookies D’Ante Smith and Jackson Carman playing guard spots, reinforcing right tackle once Riley Reiff leaves with a prospect like Neal is a smooth idea.

Chiefs land top Pac-12 WR in Draft Wire’s latest first-round projection

The #Chiefs snag a new wide receiver in the first round of @TheDraftWire’s latest 2022 mock draft projections.

College football season is underway and that means we’ll be getting plenty of new mock draft projections from our friends over at Draft Wire.

Luke Easterling’s latest mock draft has the Chiefs picking at No. 31, which will be a disappointment to many. However, the prospect that Brett Veach manages to land will have fans quite excited. They select USC WR Drake London, giving the Chiefs a new style for their offense.

Here’s what Easterling had to say about London and his fit with the Chiefs:

“The Chiefs wisely rebuilt their offensive line after a dismal performance in their Super Bowl LV blowout loss, but after losing Sammy Watkins in free agency, Patrick Mahomes needs a receiver with size and physicality to pair with Tyreek Hill and Mecole Hardman.

Listed at 6-5, 210 pounds, London is exactly the kind of pass-catcher this dynamic offense needs to play at its full potential. Giving Mahomes improved protection and adding a tower of a receiver like London would be ideal.”

London is already off to a hot start this season, recording 13 catches for 144 yards against San Jose State in the first game of the year. An area of his game that he’s seemingly improved upon this season is his route running, creating plenty of separation with savvy footwork. He already had the size and length to box defenders out and be a jump-ball receiver, but adding just a bit of finesse to his game, he has the potential to be much more in the NFL.

Georgia defense dominates in 10-3 win vs. Clemson

The Georgia Bulldogs rode a dominant defensive performance to a 10-3 win over Clemson

It was a top-five slugfest that lived up to the hype, but only if you like the gridiron equivalent of a pitchers’ duel.

No. 5 Georgia rode a dominant defensive performance to a 10-3 victory over No. 3 Clemson, keeping the Tigers out of the end zone on a night where the only touchdown they would need came in the form of a pick-six.

The Bulldogs’ star-studded defensive front, led by some of the top defensive prospects in the 2022 NFL draft class (Adam Anderson, Jordan Davis, Nolan Smith) held Clemson’s talented offense to just 180 total yards, while Tigers quarterback DJ Uiagalelei was sacked a whopping seven times.

Christopher Smith’s 74-yard interception return for a touchdown just a few minutes before halftime proved to be the difference in a game that could have College Football Playoff implications later in the season.

Desmond Ridder tallies 5 TDs as Cincinnati blows out Miami (OH)

Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder carved up Miami (OH) in Saturday’s season opener, accounting for five touchdowns

The Cincinnati Bearcats started their 2021 season with a bang, and their talented quarterback led the way with a five-touchdown performance.

Desmond Ridder tossed four touchdown passes in Saturday’s blowout win over Miami (OH), and found the end zone on the ground, as well.

Ridder did most of his damage in the first half, and finished his first game of the year with 295 yards through the air, completing 20 of his 25 passes. He added 31 yards rushing, but was also picked off once.

He could have likely been a Day 2 pick in the 2021 NFL draft, but Ridder returned to school for a chance to keep leading the Bearcats to a potential playoff berth. If he keeps putting up numbers like he did Saturday, he could improve his draft stock in the process.

Spencer Rattler’s season opener a mixed bag in narrow win vs. Tulane

Oklahoma barely escaped an upset against Tulane, and quarterback Spencer Rattler’s performance was a roller-coaster

If there was a preseason favorite to be the first quarterback selected in the 2022 NFL draft, it was Oklahoma’s Spencer Rattler.

He may still end up taking that title come next April, but his performance in Saturday’s season opener against Tulane proved just how much development he still needs before he can be a consistent passer at the next level.

The Sooners barely escaped with a 40-35 win over the unranked Green Wave, despite being the No. 2 team in the country and playing at home. The game was originally supposed to take place in Tulane’s neck of the woods (New Orleans), but Hurricane Ida had other plans.

Rattler threw a cringe-worthy interception on the Sooners’ second play of the game, one of two picks on the day for the Heisman Trophy candidate. He would finish the game with just over 300 yards and a touchdown through the air, completing 30 of his 39 passes, showing plenty of the flashes that will have NFL scouts intrigued.

It’s only one game, but Rattler still has plenty to work on if he wants to be the QB1 in the 2022 draft class.

Kayvon Thibodeaux in walking boot after injury in season opener

Oregon’s Kayvon Thibodeaux, one of top prospects in the 2022 NFL draft, left Saturday’s season opener with an apparent leg injury

Oregon edge defender Kayvon Thibodeaux left Saturday’s season opener against Fresno State with a leg injury, and has been spotted on the sideline in street clothes and a walking boot.

The potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Thibodeaux has been one of the most dominant pass rushers in college football since his freshman season. He showed off that ability earlier in Saturday’s game with an impressive strip-sack.

It remains to be seen how serious this injury is, or how long it might keep Thibodeaux out of action.

WATCH: Alabama WR John Metchie III goes diving for TD vs. Miami

Watch Alabama wide receiver John Metchie III finish off an impressive catch with a leap into the end zone vs. Miami

Another year, another top wide receiver prospect coming out of Tuscaloosa.

John Metchie III is the latest blue-chip Alabama pass-catcher, and he’s wasting little time making his presence felt in the Crimson Tide’s season opener against Miami.

Metchie finished off Bama’s first drive Saturday with a 37-yard catch-and-run touchdown, finishing it off with an impressive leap over the pylon for the score.

After putting multiple receivers in the first round in each of the last two NFL drafts, Alabama has another potential first-rounder in Metchie.

After scouting Ohio State-Minnesota, Saints take broad approach to CFB’s Week 1

The New Orleans Saints were one of many teams at Ohio State-Minnesota, but their scouts then traveled to West Florida, Maryland, and Iowa State:

[mm-video type=playlist id=01eqbyahgz6p2j3xp7 player_id=none image=https://saintswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

The New Orleans Saints saw a lot to like from the Ohio State Buckeyes receivers earlier this week. They were one of many NFL teams credentialed for the Buckeyes’ season-opening road win over the Minnesota Gophers, with projected first-round wide receivers Chris Olave and Garrett Wilson each rattling off deep touchdown passes — Olave reeled in scores of 38 and 61 yards, while Wilson caught a 56 yarder. Olave totaled 4 receptions for 117 yards and Wilson grabbed 5 receptions for 80 yards.

Either player would be a welcome addition to New Orleans in the 2022 NFL draft. But the Saints’ college scouting department will be busy evaluating all of their options in the months ahead. While we don’t know exactly where the dozen-or-so members of Jeff Ireland’s staff are assigned each week, some of them have been reported locally across the college football landscape.

Blue Gold News reports that the Saints are one of three NFL teams in attendance for West Virginia’s game with the Maryland Terps. Mountaineers draft prospects to watch include All-Big 12 safety Alonzo Addae and quarterback Jarret Doege, a potential late-round draft choice. But many eyes will be on Maryland passer Taulia Tagovailoa in his second year in the system.

But the Saints are part of a much larger crowd in the Iowa State-Northern Iowa matchup, with KQWC FM’s Quinn Douglas listing New Orleans among ten teams in town to scout the Cyclones. Iowa State’s top prospects include running back Breece Hall, athletic edge rusher Will McDonald IV, and safety Isheem Young. Cyclones quarterback Brock Purdy also shouldn’t be overlooked. Northern Iowa left tackle Trevor Penning has all the traits teams value and could be one of the highest-picked small school prospects with a strong season.

The Saints also checked in on West Florida ahead of their season opener with McNeese State. The Argos are looking to defend their Division 2 national championship, which was built by underrated pickups like JUCO-transfer safety D’Anthony Bell. When they aren’t up in the press box catching games live, NFL scouts are busy hitting the road to visit campuses and pad out scouting reports.

But we shouldn’t look too deeply into any of this — or feel concerned about the Saints missing out on higher-profile matchups like Alabama vs. Miami or Georgia vs. Clemson, or Wisconsin vs. Penn State. Scouts or executives could very well be in attendance without being credentialed for a seat in the press box, and all of this game tape will be available to review later on anyway. It’s just one small part of the process that leads into the draft.

Still, it’s always interesting to see where the black and gold pop up on Saturdays in the fall. And it’s fun to speculate about how things could develop as the draft cycle speeds up. Maybe the big gains those Buckeyes receivers made against Minnesota left a strong impression.
