The winners and losers of the 2021 NFL trade deadline

Which teams bolstered their Super Bowl hopes? Which teams failed?

The 2021 NFL trade deadline has come and gone. It was, by NFL standards, a fizzling sparkler compared to the fireworks that could have been.

The list of talent traded in season this fall reads like a 2016 Pro Bowl ballot. Von Miller was freed from the Denver Broncos’ rebuild. Melvin Ingram went to the Kansas City Chiefs to serve as a band-aid for a team in need of surgery. Zach Ertz moved from Philadelphia to the opposite of Philadelphia.

Several other big names wound up on reported trading blocks, only to stay home. Deshaun Watson is a Houston Texan and is likely to remain that way until he settles his legal issues. DeSean Jackson will have to continue toiling as the Rams’ WR4, assuming Los Angeles doesn’t release him. Expensive defenders like Trey Flowers and Xavien Howard won’t get the changes of scenery they may have needed to rebound to proper form.

So who won the trading deadline? Who failed to capitalize on the last gasp of non-waiver movement for the 2021 season? We’ve got some knee jerk reactions that will assuredly age well.

Joe Douglas is adding some offensive line depth before the trade deadline.

New York is acquiring RG Laurent Duvernay-Tardif from the Chiefs in exchange for TE Daniel Brown, per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. Duvernay-Tardif has not played since 2019 but has started 57 out of 60 career games dating back to 2015.

Duvernay-Tardif opted out of the 2020 season to work as a doctor battling COVID-19 on the frontlines of the pandemic in Canada. The 30-year-old Quebec native was the first NFL player to opt-out.

A Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, Duvernay-Tardif allowed three sacks, two quarterback hits and 22 hurries in 2019, his last year as a starter.

Brown has been with the Jets since 2019. Primarily a blocker and special teamer, he has yet to record any receiving stats through seven games this season.

Duvernay-Tardif and Brown are free agents after the 2021 season.

Jets still rejecting Denzel Mims trade inquiries

It’s been a bumpy year for Denzel Mims, but it doesn’t look like the Jets are going to trade him.

Back in September, NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo reported that the Jets were turning away trade inquiries for Denzel Mims.

With the trade deadline now just hours away, that remains the case, per the New York Post’s Brian Costello. Costello reported that the Jets have consistently told interested suitors no when asked about the second-year wide receiver.

Mims is coming off his first start of the season in place of the injured Corey Davis, but he wasn’t used consistently prior to Week 8, thus fueling trade speculation. He fell behind learning Mike LaFleur’s scheme and lost weight due to food poisoning over the offseason, but that was months ago.

The Jets have since highlighted the 24-year-old’s imperfect fit in Mike LaFleur’s system, his lack of crispness running short and intermediate routes, his unfamiliarity with every receiver position, and his inability to contribute on special teams. All of this has led to questions about his future in New York, but it appears his stay will continue.

Mims has just six catches for 109 yards in 2021. He’s only played 100 snaps this season. Mims dropped a would-be touchdown in the end zone in Sunday’s win over the Bengals.

NFL trade deadline: 6 players the Jets could deal

Jets general manager Joe Douglas could be a busy man before this year’s deadline with multiple trade candidates on his roster.

The 2021 NFL trade deadline is just a day away and there is a good chance Joe Douglas will be busy fielding phone calls until 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday.

The Jets are going nowhere this season — even after their exhilarating win over the Bengals — with a 2-5 record entering Week 9. New York was never on track to contend in Robert Saleh’s first season as head coach, and with Douglas still working to rebuild the roster, odds are that moves will be made to better the organization’s future.

Who on Gang Green’s roster could be sent packing? Here are six players that could be moved for future assets.

6 teams that could trade for Jets S Marcus Maye

Marcus Maye could be a hot commodity at the NFL trade deadline. These teams might push to land the Jets safety:

There is a chance that the Jets’ 34-31 thriller over the Bengals was Marcus Maye’s last hoorah with the team that drafted him.

With Maye set to hit free agency after failed contract negotiations with the Jets and New York off to a 2-5 start, the veteran safety is a prime trade candidate for a contender in need of help in the secondary — even after his February DUI arrest that has him facing possible future discipline from the NFL.

Below are six teams that could push to land Maye ahead of Tuesday’s trade deadline if they are willing to meet Joe Douglas’ price tag.

The pros and cons of trading S Marcus Maye

The Jets could trade Marcus Maye. But that doesn’t mean they should. Here are the pros and cons of dealing the safety:

Marcus Maye is the hottest name on the list of potential players the Jets could trade this week.

The safety is playing on his franchise tag after failing to come to a long-term extension with the team and has been the subject to plenty of trade rumors over the past few weeks. Though Maye said he wants to stay with the Jets long-term, there have been reports he would “welcome” a trade and the Jets are looking for at least a third-round pick for him.

Trades don’t exist in a vacuum, though. While trading Maye could help the team in the long run, there are short-term consequences to consider.

Here are the biggest pros and cons for trading the safety.

Five NFL trades that won’t happen in 2021… but should

With the NFL’s trade deadline right around the corner, here are five deals that won’t happen… but probably should.

For every trade that happens, there are 10 that don’t. Enterprising general managers are on the phone with other enterprising general managers all the time, and they will propose the most preposterous deals just to see where teams are with even their best players. Most of these out of the park ideas have no chance of happening, but even the weirdest deals have potential for both teams involved if the conditions are right.

So, with the NFL’s 2021 trade deadline coming in at 4:00 p.m. EST on Tuesday, November 2, here are five deals that could work well for all involved, as ridiculous as they may seem on the surface.

Jets WR Jamison Crowder paying no mind to trade rumors

Jets WR Jamison Crowder makes sense as a trade candidate, but he’s not paying attention to the rumors.

Jamison Crowder is not giving much thought to trade rumors as the Nov. 2 deadline draws near.

The 28-year-old receiver is in the final year of his contract and his 1-4 Jets are not contenders. That makes Crowder a logical trade chip.

He gets that, but he’s also not thinking about the swirling rumors very much.

“It’s something that I don’t pay attention to,” Crowder said Friday. “Obviously, it’s a business, but my main focus is to come out each day and prepare for this week. That’s just how I view it.”

Crowder added that he hasn’t thought about his long-term future or having a role with the Jets beyond this season. Rather, he just wants to focus on his job.

However, trading Crowder could net the Jets some additional draft capital. His departure would also create more opportunities for rookie Elijah Moore in the slot. On the downside, the Jets don’t exactly have a high-functioning offense right now; taking an experienced target away from Zach Wilson could prove detrimental to the young quarterback.

Crowder has 11 catches for 85 yards and a score over two games this season.

Crowder is not the only Jets being mentioned in trade rumors. Safety Marcus Maye said that he wants to remain with the Jets on Thursday, but he is playing on a $10.6 million franchise tag. That’s a relatively cheap cost for a contender, and the Jets couldn’t sign Maye to a long-term extension during the offseason. However, Maye is facing potential discipline from the league following a February DUI arrest in Florida. That could complicate matters.

“They know I want to be here,” Maye said, referring to the Jets.

NFL trade deadline: 5 players the Jets could deal before the deadline

Jets general manager Joe Douglas could be a busy man before this year’s trade deadline with multiple trade candidates on his roster.

The 2021 NFL trade deadline is less than a month away and it is safe to assume Joe Douglas will be a busy man once Nov. 2 rolls around.

The Jets are going nowhere this season with a 1-4 record at their bye week. New York was never on track to contend in Robert Saleh’s first season as head coach, and with Douglas still working to rebuild the roster, odds are moves will be made to better the organization’s future in the coming weeks.

Who on Gang Green’s roster could be sent packing? Here are five players that could be moved before the clock strikes 4 p.m. ET on deadline day.
