Steelers QB Dwayne Haskins to compete with Mason Rudolph for starting role

Dwayne Haskins looks to take over the QB position in Pittsburgh.

One of the most important competitions of the last 18 years of the Pittsburgh Steelers franchise is on the horizon. Who will vie for the starting position at quarterback?

According to Dwayne Haskins, he’ll be in the mix. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo reported that Haskins was told in exit meetings that he’ll compete with Mason Rudolph.

First, the Steelers will have to extend the one-year contract Haskins signed in January. Expect the new deal to be similar to the last.

Haskins never seemed much of a threat to supplant Rudolph as the No. 2 quarterback behind Ben Roethlisberger. He appeared in all four preseason games completing 37 of 59 attempts for 379 yards, two touchdowns and one interception.

Haskins was sacked 49 times on his way to a 3-10 record as a starter with the Washington Football Team between 2019 and 2020. He threw for 2,804 yards, 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
