Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie is in his second stint with the organization after coming back to Brooklyn as a result of the Kyrie Irving trade to the Dallas Mavericks. With the Nets transitioning into an era without Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving, one matter to ponder is if Dinwiddie will be part of the next stage of the franchise.

Brian Lewis of the New York Post wrote over the weekend that Dinwiddie became eligible for an contract extension on Aug. 14 and he can sign an extension for as much as four years and $128 million ($32 million per season). After Brooklyn acquired promising players like Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson (who signed an lucrative contract with Brooklyn this summer) to pair with center Nic Claxton, it’s safe to say that the Nets will not sign Dinwiddie for the maximum value of his extension.

The NBA space seems to be split on how good Dinwiddie is these days, but he can start for a good amount of teams because of his ability to score and distribute the basketball. However, with guys like Bridges and Claxton in line for sizable extensions in the near future and someone like Simmons making a little over $78 million over the next two seasons, Dinwiddie’s extension may come down to how much of the salary pie is left for him.
