Rutgers men’s basketball starts season with impressive win over Columbia

Rutgers men’s basketball starts the season with a win over Columbia.

On Monday night,Rutgers  basketball kicked off the regular season by welcoming Columbia to Piscataway. It wasn’t much of a welcome from Rutgers.

In their first home game of the 2022-2023 campaign, the Scarlet Knights got balanced scoring and impressive defense in a 75-35 win. However, their play in the second half is what stood out.

After ending the first half up 31-21, Rutgers pulled away as the night moved on. From the 1:48 mark onward, the Scarlet Knights outscored Columbia 50-14. That was after Columbia recovered from a 15-0 run to make it a four-point game.

Rutgers was led offensively by Cam Spencer, who had a team-high 17 points while going 3-5 from three-point range. Every Rutgers starter reached double figures in points as Columbia had no answers defensively. In a dominating win, the Scarlet Knight’s experience shined through.

This season, Rutgers returned the second most minutes of any Big ten team in the conference. That experience will be vital as they look to return to the Big Dance for the third straight season. With one win in the books, they will look to move to a 2-0 on the season on Thursday night when Sacred Heart visits.
