Report: New Bears GM will be involved in choosing next head coach

The Bears might actually be going about this GM, head coach search the right way. Shocker, I know.

It looks like the Chicago Bears are nearing the end of their search for a new general manager as the finalists are gearing up for their second interviews this week. Which is good news considering they’ve also lined up at least three head coach finalists.

According to 670 the Score’s Matt Spiegel, the Bears are looking to hire a GM before a head coach, which was the aim from the beginning. Perhaps the more interesting nugget is the new GM is expected to be heavily involved in choosing the next head coach, including the finalists.

Given there have been three head coach finalists announced before Chicago has a GM, there was some legit concern that the Bears were going about this thing the wrong way. But it appears as if they might actually be going about this the right way, which I know is a shock.

Former Bears scouting director Greg Gabriel has heard something similar.

The Bears have narrowed down their GM list to three, possibly four, candidates in Chiefs executive director of player personnel Ryan Poles, Titans director of player personnel Monti Ossenfort, Patriots senior consultant Eliot Wolf and potentially Colts director of college scouting Morocco Brown.

Chicago also has three head coach finalists in Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and former Lions/Colts head coach Jim Caldwell. Although, those could change or additional names could be added once the new GM is in place.

The hope has always been the next GM would get to choose his head coach, especially given John Fox was forced on Ryan Pace back in 2015. We’ll see if that’s the case as things start to heat up with the GM search.
