Raiders sign free-agent QB Nick Mullens to a one-year deal

In 2021, the Raiders defeated Nick Mullens in Cleveland in one of the biggest games of the season to keep their playoff hopes alive. Mullens played adequately in that game, completing nearly 67 percent of his passes. Now, he’ll play for the Raiders.

According to Mike Garafolo of NFL Media, the Raiders have signed free-agent quarterback Nick Mullens to a one-year deal. He’ll compete with another free-agent signing in Garrett Gilbert to be Derek Carr’s backup.

Mullens is 27 years old with 17 career starts under his belt. Before his spot start in Cleveland, he started eight games with the 49ers during the 2020 season. He threw 12 touchdowns and 12 interceptions during that year with a passer rating of 84.1.

After several years in the league, Mullens has established himself as a fine backup quarterback. While he isn’t overly dynamic as a passer or a runner, he can keep the offense afloat and make enough plays to keep his team competitive. That’s all you can ask for in a backup quarterback.
