Phidarian Mathis didn’t expect to be a second round pick in the 2022 NFL draft

Former Alabama DL Phidarian Mathis went a little higher than he expected in the 2022 NFL draft.

One of the more surprising selections in the 2022 NFL draft was former Alabama star defensive lineman [autotag]Phidarian Mathis[/autotag] being selected in the second round by the Washington Commanders.

Fans were not the only ones surprised on draft night, Mathis himself did not expect to be selected that early in the draft. In fact, Mathis did not expect to be selected until the third or fourth round.

Mathis’ agent, Nicole Lynn would tweet out that managing expectations are part of her job as an agent. Lynn also mentioned that Mathis would have been selected by someone else within the next 10 picks had Washington not taken the talented defensive lineman.

Mathis finished his senior season in Tuscaloosa with nine sacks but is best known for his run-stuffing ability from his interior defensive line position.

Mathis will provide quality depth to the Washington defensive line that already features a pair of former Crimson Tide stars in [autotag]Jonathan Allen[/autotag] and [autotag]Daron Payne[/autotag].
