The Seattle Seahawks made several changes to their secondary in this past week’s game against the Philadelphia Eagles. With Devon Witherspoon and Jamal Adams ruled out they had to make at least some adjustments – but head coach Pete Carroll went even further, rolling with a radically different lineup than we’ve come to expect.
The biggest change was starting Mike Jackson in the right boundary spot where Riq Woolen normally plays. It paid off, as Jackson had arguably the best game of his career in coverage. Asked if he planned to continue the competition yesterday, Carroll told reporters that “we’ll see.”

For the season Woolen’s production has been somewhat disappointing compared to his outstanding rookie year. He posted six interceptions in 2022 and has just two so far this year. Meanwhile, his passer rating allowed has jumped from 48.7 to 73.9 and he’s already missed eight tackles (15.4%).
Jackson is nowhere near the athlete that Woolen is, but his performance this week proves that natural ability isn’t everything. Carroll should continue to roll with the hot hand.
