Patrick Mahomes injury update: What we know about Chiefs QB turf toe

The latest on what we know about the turf toe situation, and possible offseason surgery, for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Heading into the Super Bowl, there were rumblings about a possible injury to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

Here’s the latest of what we know, just before kickoff.

Mahomes suffered a turf toe injury during the Chiefs’ divisional round matchup against the Browns. He was also in concussion protocol after the game, so a lot of people overlooked the toe injury.

Mahomes then played (and played well!) in the AFC Championship game, so most of us thought that the toe injury was obviously under control.

Yet in an update this week, NFL.com reported that the injury is worse than first thought, and Mahomes is “expected” to undergo surgery this offseason to deal with the problem.

…That won’t stop Mahomes in this game, however. While it may be uncomfortable for him to run, Mahomes looked plenty mobile in the last game and will undoubtedly play the Super Bowl. The Chiefs offense is creative enough that they will find ways to keep things moving, even if Mahomes isn’t as mobile as he might otherwise be.
