Numbers crunch lies ahead for Buffs following spring football game

Coach Prime has a numbers game to play regarding Colorado’s roster

The Colorado Buffaloes’ annual spring game is Saturday, and CU will showcase a preview of its 2023 roster.

But this one will have a different feel than the rest.

It’ll be the first one under Deion Sanders. ESPN cameras will be there, and it’ll be Coach Prime’s first opportunity to display his retooled roster to the world.

As of this writing, Sanders and Co. have signed more than 40 new players via the transfer portal or through high school recruiting. Add the approximately 50 players on last season’s team who have remained in Boulder, and that puts the Buffs a bit above the NCAA-mandated limit of 85 scholarship players.

In addition, there will be many high-profile visitors on hand for the CU scrimmage.

With all of those factors in play, Saturday afternoon could serve as a challenge of sorts to incumbent players. As for those players who may not continue to play for Colorado, Sanders had this to say:

“We don’t weed anyone out; they weed themselves out.”

And about the many recruits who are coming to Folsom Field this weekend?

“This weekend is going to be phenomenal,” Sanders said. “It’s going to be a lot of ‘24 players as well as guys that … we’re going to sign right now and hope to sign and hope to get a commitment when they come on the trip and see how beautiful this city is and this university is. We’re happy.”

With the multitude of factors in the equation this weekend, the spring game could very well carry more weight than a simple showcase.

It could be the continuation of a crucial numbers game as Colorado heads toward the homestretch of an offseason unlike any other in Buffs’ history.
