Draft day is quickly approaching and with just a few days left before the first round, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields still can’t seem to gain any traction.
There were rumors that after a second pro-day in which Fields threw for San Francisco and a handful of other teams, that the Niners were starting to make a lean toward the Buckeye QB. However, it seems like word is getting around that Fields won’t be in the 49ers’ future plans.
NFL insider, Ian Rapoport reported late Sunday evening that according to several sources, San Francisco had narrowed their top two choices down to Alabama‘s Mac Jones and North Dakota State’s Trey Lance. If that information is correct, it leaves Fields on the outside looking in.
As the #49ers close in on their decision of which QB to take at No. 3, sources say they are down to two prospects — and the belief is those two are #Bama QB Mac Jones and #NDSU QB Trey Lance. Several sources say the focus does appear to have shifted to those two.

It’ll be too bad for OSU fans and Fields if the Niners end up going with one of those two picks as it feels like Fields would thrive in Kyle Shanahan’s system. It’s always possible that San Francisco is blowing smoke, but it’s doubtful since they’ve already traded up to the third spot.
There are several other teams who seem intrigued with Fields, most notably the New England Patriots. The Pats are sitting at pick No. 15, but have been rumored to be looking to trade up into the top ten to secure Fields. Right now, it’s anyone’s guess, but one thing is for sure… Thursday night can’t get here soon enough.
