Maine Red Claws join Boston Celtics in suspending season

The Maine Red Claws have joined the Boston Celtics in suspending their season indefinitely due to concerns about the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

If you were hoping to fill the hole left by suspended Boston Celtics games after the NBA indefinitely put a halt to the 2019-20 season with some Maine Red Claws games, you’re going to be disappointed.

But, the G League’s decision to suspend operations along with the NBA was the right call to make, as even the comparatively smaller size of Red Claws and other G League games represents a significant risk.

Following the lead of the parent club, the Claws released a statement on the closure, noting that the team has been working closely with the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention.

They also noted that the Maine CDC “determined that no Red Claws players, staff nor game attendees face any significant risk from the case involving the Utah players” after center Vincent Poirier’s time with the Red Claws following Boston’s Mar. 6 tilt with Utah.

The Claws had eight games remaining in their season, and the team is weighing whether to ask players to remain in the Portland area should the league decide to resume activities this season at a later, safer date.
