LSU adds Freshman All-SEC defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo

Jamar Cain lands highly coveted defensive tackle transfer.

New defensive line coach Jamar Cain is already paying dividends for the LSU Tigers. They added their second transfer of the day when Freshman All-SEC defensive tackle Mekhi Wingo committed to LSU.

LSU was among the top four schools vying for one of the top talents available in the transfer portal. They can add him to the interior group that already includes Freshman All-American defensive tackle Maason Smith.

Wingo was No. 3 on 247Sports’ list for the top 10 available transfers.

Wingo — a three-star recruit in the Class of 2021 — was set to visit LSU this past Wednesday through Friday, Oklahoma this past Friday and Saturday and USC Sunday and Monday, according to 247Sports’ Carl Reed. During his true freshman season in Columbia, Missouri, Wingo combined for 27 tackles, one interception and one sack in 11 games (three starts). Wingo earned All-SEC Freshman honors for his performance.

Early on Tuesday, the team added offensive tackle Tre’Mond Shorts from East Tennessee State. The new staff continued to add to the trenches. Tigers have eight spots remaining to be filled with still more work to be done. Six spots could likely go to new transfers as they wait on a couple of high school recruits.

Wingo finished with 27 tackles, two TFLs, one sack, and one pick-six in 2021.
