Kirk Herbstreit is not a believer in how the Ohio State football program filled out its roster. The Buckeyes added a few of the most notable names in the transfer portal.
From superstar Alabama freshman Caleb Downs to Ole Miss running back Quinshon Judkins, the Buckeyes beefed up their roster with several key SEC players. Don’t tell Herbstreit that.
On ESPN’s College Gameday, Herbstreit, who called Judkins an Ole Miss backup running back, tried to use some logic to indicate that Ohio State didn’t necessarily upgrade its roster.
His rationale was that it added a slew of talented players, but the Buckeyes don’t have numerous players with experience playing with each other. Nick Saban somewhat agreed with him, noting it is more important who you pay than just bringing in the best of the best.
However, he forgot to mention the incredible stats players like Judkins and Downs put up. Judkins rushed for over 1,500 yards as a freshman. Even an Alabama account was taken back by Herbstreit’s comments.

He’s trying to make the argument that Ohio State didn’t go all-out in NIL to upgrade the roster… how can you possibly even begin there?

The Buckeyes have many transfer players on this roster, and there’s a chance they don’t mesh well early on, especially without a challenging non-conference schedule to test them before some big-time Big Ten games.
That said, the talent is certainly there. Ohio State went all-out for talent, and it has it. Now, it just needs to ensure it meshes on the field.
