Despite their lack of success this season, the presence of Victor Wembanyama has given the San Antonio Spurs and their fans something to be hopeful for this season. The 20-year-old Frenchman is an incredible talent who clearly has the skills to be the centerpiece of the franchise moving forward.
Unfortunately, as noted, the Spurs as a team have been rough this season. And on Monday night, they ran into a buzzsaw. And that buzzsaw was named Joel Embiid. San Antonio lost to the Philadelphia 76ers, and Embiid put up some incredible numbers. They ended up losing to the 76ers by a score of 133-123.
After the game, Embiid had some high praise for Wembanyama.
“He’s great, man,” Embiid said via ESPN. “He’s got everything, size, skill, got everything. Bright future. He’s already pretty good. Once he develops, he’s going to be a lot of problems for a lot of guys in this league.”
He also noted that he hopes he’s out of the league by the time Wembanyama takes over.
“Hopefully when I don’t have to guard him and I’m out of the league, hopefully he can break all these records,” Embiid said.
Wembanyama finished the game with 33 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and two blocks while shooting 10-of-19 from the floor and 2-of-5 from behind the three-point line.
Meanwhile, Embiid put up a franchise-record 70 points to go along with 18 rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block while shooting 24-of-41 from the floor and 1-of-2 from behind the three-point arc.
