Iowa opens up Big Ten play with a 12-9 overall record at Michigan (13-11, 2-1 Big Ten) from Ray Fisher Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Hawkeyes enter the series against the Wolverines having won six of their past eight contests and fresh off a series win over Central Michigan.
After surrendering a 2-1 lead in the top of the eighth on Sunday versus the Chippewas, Iowa freshman Sam Petersen delivered a two-out, two-run single that scored Andy Nelson and Kyle Huckstorf. The Hawkeyes held on for a 4-2 victory after redshirt sophomore Jacob Henderson induced a fly out, a strike out and a ground out to notch his first career save.
“That’s a good team, winning two out of three is good. Winning the series against a team picked to win their league is a good. It will look good late in the season,” Petersen said of the series win over Central Michigan.
Petersen described what he saw on the 0-2 pitch that he laced to left center for the game-winning two-RBI base knock.
“Two strikes, I am always a hitter that likes to sit fast ball, but with two strikes you have to be ready to hit everything. He gave me a fastball up in the zone that I was able to stay on top of and hit a line drive,” Petersen said.
Iowa opened up Big Ten play against Michigan last year as well. The Wolverines took three of four in that four-game series from Round Rock, Texas.
Let’s take a look at game details and how fans can follow the action this weekend.
