If it had been anyone else on the roster, the moment probably would not have indicated anything. But in Avdija’s case, it illustrated a central character trait. Perhaps no Wizards player is harder on himself than Avdija, an attribute that both drives him and limits him at the same time. Team officials who have seen other talented, young players endure inevitable growing pains sometimes feel compelled to urge Avdija to conjure some patience. “He’s a hard worker, and he’s always probably his toughest critic,” coach Wes Unseld Jr. said. “So it’s just kind of reassuring him: ‘It’s going to take time. You’re in your second year. It’s not all going to happen at once. Just keep working, keep playing the right way. Good things will happen.’ But I think at times, he gets a little frustrated when he misses shots or misses an assignment. Then it takes on a compounding effect where he’s dwelling on that missed assignment or next shot, and it affects the next play.”
