Giants’ Daniel Jones sounds like a broken record: ‘I’ve got to be better’

New York Giants QB Daniel Jones sounds like the same broken record Eli Manning became toward the end of his career.

The New York Giants were embarrassed on Sunday, 36-9, by a San Francisco 49ers team that was without 10-plus starters. The Giants were plagued by the same mistakes and issues that have dogged them for a while now: turnovers on offense and the failure to get off the field on third downs on defense.

Quarterback Daniel Jones has had his issues when it comes to turnovers. He threw another interception on an ill-advised pass on Sunday in the direction of tight end Evan Engram, who was in tight coverage. The ball was picked off by Niners linebacker Fred Warner.

“Poor decision in that situation,” Jones told reporters after the game. “You can’t afford to turn the ball over and force the ball to Evan there, so I’ll look at the tape and learn from it. Certainly a costly mistake.”

Jones and Engram combined for another costly mistake when Engram missed a pitch in the backfield on the Giants’ first possession. The loose ball was recovered by Niners defensive end Dion Jordan (yes, that Dion Jordan) on the Giants’ 42.

“Just a poor pitch and something we worked on all week,” said Jones. “I’ve got to do a better job there.”

They worked on that play all week? It looked as if Jones tossed it a little high and behind Engram, but it was certainly catchable.

The Giants are now 0-3 and are 3-12 to start Jones’ career as their quarterback. He spoke about what lay ahead for him and his teammates in what appears to be another dismal season.

“I think for us as a team and for everyone in the building, it’s important that we correct the things that went wrong. We understand what went wrong and we’ll improve from this game, and not to let it define us as a team,” Jones said. “We know that we’re capable of playing a lot better than we did today. I think there were a lot of things that happened that were uncharacteristic of who we are and what we can be.

“As a team, we need to understand that, we need to move forward and go back to work determined to play better and to fix the things that have gotten in our way these first few weeks. We’re not going to let it affect our confidence, we’re certainly not going to let it affect how we work and how hard we attack this week, how hard we attack the preparation towards the Rams. I think we have the guys in the locker room to do it, and that mindset and that approach this week will be key.”

Time will tell, but given the fact that they were schooled by a bunch of backups isn’t giving the fan base a lot of hope.
