Gavin Wimsatt is solid once again as Rutgers football rolls to a win over Wagner

Gavin Wimsatt was solid once again for Rutgers football.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Gavin Wimsatt again produced a clean performance for Rutgers football in a 45-3 win over Wagner.

Rutgers is now 4-1 (1-1 Big Ten) and has completed their non-conference schedule. Wimsatt finished the game 12-of-19 for 146 yards and a touchdown. He also had two rushing touchdowns on seven carries for 15 yards.

The performance from Wimsatt, while not as decadent as the scoreline would indicate, was still a solid one. The most important factor: no turnovers.

It was also a significant improvement from last year.

Against the same opponent, Wimsatt was 4-of-12 for 63 yards with a touchdown and an interception. In that 2022 game against Wagner, he also had six catches for 62 yards.

“You know, he continues to take care of the football so that’s what we want to see and he made some really good throws,” head coach Greg Schiano said after the game.

“He got hit once on the sack, which was the smart thing to do. I think he just played a very measured game today. And he hit some shots. So I think he was what was 66 percent, maybe 67 percent. That’s a good outing.”

Wimsatt played deep into the fourth quarter, despite Rutgers being up multiple scores. It was a bit surprising to see the starting quarterback in the game where he could be exposed to hits.

But Wimsatt and much of the starting offense played deep into the game. For Wimsatt, that was not an issue at all.

“I’m definitely fine with that,” Wimsatt said after the game.

“There’s never a point in the game where I can’t learn from you know, even when I’m not in the game, there’s plays that I can learn from. So I think it’s just you know, also getting reps and just being able to learn in different situations.”
