Frank Reich talks how confidence impacts QB position

Frank Reich believes getting back to the basics could help their new QB.

The Indianapolis Colts are expected to bring in Carson Wentz to be the new quarterback after agreeing to a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles and one major part of his game that needs correction is his confidence.

An aspect of his game that has seemingly made its way to impacting him negatively on the field, confidence is something Wentz needs to get back. While Frank Reich isn’t allowed to name Wentz specifically, he did talk about what confidence means to the quarterback position.

“That’s a great question and a very relevant question always – the confidence level of players at every position, certainly not just the quarterback position. I think one of the great misnomers is that sometimes fans think the greatest players in the world – I’ve seen some of the best players in the world. Everybody loses confidence for a moment. It may be brief, but it always goes back the same way Jim (Ayello),” Reich told reporters on Thursday.

Wentz has to get more comfortable and confident with his mechanics and feeling pressure. That’s one part of his game that has failed him n recent seasons. It seems he’s seeing ghosts and feeling pressure that might not actually be there.

This gives him pause in stepping into his throws and using proper mechanics with his lower half, something that Mark Schofield of Touchdown Wire brilliantly pointed out in his breakdown of the 28-year-old.

And Reich hopes to have a solution to help Wentz get his confidence back.

“One of the ways to build confidence back is you go back to the basics, you go back to the fundamentals and technique, you go back to your basic schemes and you build it one play at a time,” Reich said. “That’s true for any of us. So that is the way we will handle every position.”

The Colts have a lot of work to do in getting Wentz to a point where he’s more of an impact player than a liability, but it all starts with his mindset and confidence in the pocket.
