Former Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez jokes about coming out of retirement

Gonzalez wants to help the Chiefs “Run It Back” for the 2020 NFL season.

If Rob Gronkowski can do it, why not? That’s the current line of thinking from former Kansas City Chiefs TE Tony Gonzalez.

On Tuesday, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers traded the New England Patriots to acquire the contract rights of Gronkowski, who spent the past season retired from NFL play. Now, Gronk will rejoin Tom Brady with the Bucs, reuniting one of the most iconic QB-TE duos of all-time for at least one more season.

Gonzalez, who retired in 2014 and currently works as an analyst for Fox Sports, got to thinking that perhaps he could make a Gronkowski-like comeback of his own. The 44-year-old joked about rejoining the Chiefs to help the team as they defend their Super Bowl title.

“As you can tell I’ve been working out, getting in shape,” Gonzalez said in a video posted to his Twitter page. “I saw Gronk talking about coming back and I said to myself, ‘Hey, me too, baby.’ I’m coming back. Double tight end set. Me, Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill, Patrick Mahomes, Sammy Watkins, great defense. [We’re] going back to back Super Bowls, baby. Alright? It’s time to get back to work.”

Gonzalez last played football for the Atlanta Falcons in 2013. He doesn’t look half bad catching passes in the video. While Gonazlez is only two years older than Brady, he immediately becomes the oldest player on an NFL roster if he did come out of retirement.
