Despite it still being available to buy on Steam for $24.99, Bungie is removing Destiny 2’s Forsaken expansion from the game in February next year, at which point it will enter Destiny 2’s DCV, the Destiny Content Vault. When The Witch Queen expansion arrives in February 2022, Forsaken is being vaulted along with a host of other Year 4 content.
This comes shortly after fan backlash to skill-based matchmaking in Trials of Osiris.
Bungie says vaulting the content will allow more room for future features, locations, and missions. The Tangled Shore location is also being removed, along with the Presage and Harbinger Exotic missions.
The Proving Grounds strike and Battlegrounds are some of the only activities from Year 4 that will survive the cull.

“Vaulting this content will allow us the space to launch The Witch Queen expansion and its new Throne World destination, as well as new features like weapon crafting, the new Legendary difficulty campaign option, the new Glaive weapon archetype, plus all the additional content we have planned for the four new Seasons to come starting in February,” Bungie explains in an announcement post.
“Beginning in February, the existing Battlegrounds will be combined with strikes into a new ‘Vanguard Operations’ playlist that will be free for all players. In addition, the Warden of Nothing strike will remain in the game and will be available to all players for free. Lastly, all of Spider’s currency exchange function will be taken over by Master Rahool in the Tower when the Tangled Shore is moved into the DCV.”
Bungie will make the Forsaken campaign free to play from December 7, 2021, giving people a couple of months to experience it before it’s gone forever. However, those who don’t keep up with video game news could still purchase the content before then, only for it to be removed a short time later.
Fans have taken to social media to decry the decision to remove the expansion.
And the start point for the story in the game currently is a mission where a main character from the campaign (which doesn't exist anymore) dies tragically and you're supposed to care.
With the new expansion launch, they're deleting that and the entire revenge-seeking campaign.
