Dale Earnhardt Jr. says Washington NFL’s team name was a ‘dark cloud’ over franchise

“For me, I’m ready for a new chapter.”

Dale Earnhardt Jr. has been a fan of Washington’s NFL franchise forever, never shying away from giving his takes on the team’s struggles on social media or elsewhere.

On his latest edition of his podcast, Earnhardt Jr. shared his thoughts about the franchise’s name change, and he approved of it.

“As a fan of the team, I’m excited about the change,” he said. “We haven’t won a Super Bowl since 1991. The state of the franchise and its success, they all play a role in the emotion over this change and decision. For me, I’m ready for a new chapter.”

“And I’m ready for this conversation to no longer be part of my experience as a fan of the team, and the debate over this and the frustration over it, and how it affects the franchise,” he added. “It’s a dark cloud over it all the time and it’s not going away. It’s hard to continue to support the franchise when this is part of the conversation.”

As for picking a new name?

“I’m not going to fall in love with one. I’m just going to wait,” he said. “I don’t want to really like one and find out it’s the other. I’ve invested in this franchise for decades and I want to continue that relationship, and so I’m going to be open-minded as to whatever it becomes.”
