Cowboys prime candidate for summer starring in HBO’s Hard Knocks

The Dallas Cowboys are a prime candidate to host next season of HBO’s Hard Knocks.

Every year football fans get a behind-the-scenes look at one NFL franchise’s training camp through HBO’s television series, Hard Knocks. Longtime fans of the Dallas Cowboys should remember as the club was the focus of the show in two of the first four seasons of the program, both in 2002 and 2008.

The NFL certainly understands the draw that the Cowboys are in the national media, and the attention a Dallas Hard Knocks could garner. During the annual NFL Fall Meetings in 2013 the league revised the selection process, and under the new approach, the Dallas Cowboys are one of the most likely clubs to host the hit show in 2021.

The Cowboys have no shortage of storylines in the upcoming offseason; Dak Prescott’s injury recovery and looming contract extension, Mike McCarthy’s first real training camp with the club, and the pressure on this talented roster to have a bounce back season, are just to name a few.

Any team may volunteer to participate, but if none do, a team that meets the updated criteria will be chosen, and the Cowboys are one of only a few teams that would be entered in the pool.

The criteria is as follow:

Teams can be exempt from hosting the show if they…

  1. Have a first-year head coach
  2. Have made the playoffs in at least one of the previous two seasons
  3. Have hosted Hard Knocks in the last 10 years

Based on those benchmarks, if no franchise volunteers, the Cowboys would be joined by the Giants, Cardinals, Panthers, and Broncos as the potential centerpiece of the production.
