C.J. Beathard to start for 49ers vs. Cardinals in Week 16

Nick Mullens suffered an elbow injury in Week 15.

The San Francisco 49ers will have a different starting quarterback this weekend when they take on the Arizona Cardinals. Jimmy Garoppolo is still on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain and is not likely to play this week.

Nick Mullens, who has started eight games for San Francisco this season, suffered an elbow injury in the 49ers’ 41-33 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. He will be out this week, so head coach Kyle Shanahan said C.J. Beathard will start.

Mullens had gone 2-6 as a starter this season and threw interceptions in six straight games.

Beathard, though, is 1-9 as a starter in his career and has not won a game since 2017.

He has had limited work in four games this season, completing 28-of-45 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns.

In 17 career games, he has 14 touchdown passes and 13 interceptions.

He has started three times against the Cardinals, losing all three games. In those starts, Beathard has thrown three touchdown passes and three interceptions, getting sacked 13 times. He has rushed for two touchdowns, though.

Kickoff is on Saturday at State Farm Stadium at 2:30 p.m. local time.
