The more time that goes by the more we see the head-tilting reactions to Patrick Mahomes landing at No. 4 in the NFL Network’s Top 100 Players list. It is not surprising that certain teammates of Mahomes had some strong opinions on their leader being slighted on the list.
“The NFL poll is what it is. It’s TV land. I don’t want to harp on what happens in TV land, but everybody has their opinions and everybody has their favorites,” Tight end Travis Kelce said. “Obviously, I’m a big fan of Pat’s. I think he’s the best player in the National Football League. You can’t tell me there’s a better quarterback than him, that’s for sure. You can turn on whatever film you want, he’s the best player in the National Football League in my mind. He led us to a Super Bowl because he is that.”
Linebacker Anthony Hitchens didn’t vote in the NFL Top 100 players list this year, but he knows where he stands on the issue.
“In my eyes, he’s the best player in the league, but I mean I’m not voting. I know Pat, he’s just going to get better and better,” Hitchens stated. “This is motivation for him, which not that he really needs more, but he’s definitely the best player in the league in my eyes, and he’s young and he’s just going to keep growing.”
Safety Tyrann Mathieu, one of the vocal leaders of the defense, brushed off the ranking and explained his own mindset.
“I don’t really care too much about the NFL Top 100 unless I make myself care,” Mathieu said. “I’m highly motivated to prove to everybody that I’m one of the best players in this game, and I still have that motivation”
The Chiefs are the best team in the NFL and they have the hardware to prove it. While it seems that within the walls of the Chiefs organization, there is zero doubt about who the rightful No. 1 player in the league is, it also seems as if Mahomes might work to make sure everyone else has zero doubt about it come next year’s list.
