Mexico head coach Tata Martino has ended any lingering speculation that Javier “Chicharito” Hernández could earn a shock recall ahead of the 2022 World Cup.
Hernández, Mexico’s all-time top scorer, hasn’t appeared for El Tri since 2019. Though the LA Galaxy forward is having a strong season in MLS and has repeatedly stated he is open to a call-up, Martino told the media on Tuesday that he would not be calling the forward in.
“In the case of Chicharito, we are simply going with other forwards,” Martino said. “We will try to choose the 26 players who are closest to our game.”
The reason for the veteran forward’s exile isn’t completely known, though there is speculation that it could be partially down to disciplinary reasons.
While Chicharito has consistently stated his willingness to accept a call-up for Mexico, another MLS star is in the opposite camp.
Carlos Vela has not played for El Tri since the 2018 World Cup, though his strong form with LAFC has led to calls for his return.
Vela himself has already declared his time with Mexico to be over, and Martino added to that by saying the 33-year-old had previously requested not to be called in anymore.
“Roughly three years ago, Carlos Vela informed us that he did not wish to be called into the national team,” Martino said. “That hasn’t changed.”
Mexico will play Peru in a friendly on Saturday at the Rose Bowl, and against Colombia on Tuesday at Levi’s Stadium in the Bay Area.
