GAME NOTES (PDF): WyomingColorado State

ODDS: Wyoming -8.5

OVER/UNDER: 42.5

SP+ PROJECTION: Wyoming by 10.4

FEI PROJECTION: Wyoming by 10.6

PARKER FLEMING PROJECTION: Wyoming has a 71.34% win probability (30.99-23.22)

Colorado State had an opportunity to get back in the win column last week, but came up just short against San Jose State. The Rams had their largest offensive output, in terms of yards, of the season, but just couldn’t finish when it came down to it.

This week, the Rams welcome the Wyoming Cowboys to Fort Collins for the 114th Border War matchup. The Bronze Boot is on the line. The Rams can play spoiler for the Cowboys; as Wyoming looks to maintain pace with Boise State for the Mountain Division title.

Craig Bohl is in his 9th season in charge of the Cowboys. He has a 51-53 overall and a 31-36 conference record in his time in Laradise. Andrew Peasley and Titus Swen are the main threats on offense for the Rams to watchout for.

Now to the keys to victory for the Rams.

Three Keys to a colorado state victory

1. Keep the QB protected

Before the San Jose State game, the Rams had done a little bit better job of protecting the quarterback. Against one of the best fronts in the MW, it all came apart. CSU surrendered nine sacks and when trying to give Clay Millen more time accidentally took him out.

Colorado State will face another tough challenge this week as they face a Wyoming defense averaging close to three sacks a game. If the Rams want to bring the Bronze Boot home, they will need to give Clay Millen, or whomever is starting, time to get through his progressions.

2. Defend the Run

The Cowboys like to run. 57% of their total yards this year have come on the ground. And Wyoming isn’t the best at passing, as they mainly use it as a tool to open their running game. Titus Swen is the main rushing threat, but there are others including D.Q. James and Dawaiian McNeely.

Andrew Peasley is also a threat to run, but if the Rams can contain him and force him to throw they have a chance this week. If they start letting Wyoming run all over them, it’s going to be a long game. The Rams have a shot to disrupt the standings, but need to man up and defend the run in order to do so.

3. Capitalize on the Big Plays

The Rmas had 11 explosive plays on offense against San Jose State. They were only able to capitalize on two of them, and that was only because they directly resulted in scores, a 56 yard Avery Morrow run and a 40 yard Tory Horton catch. The Rams just couldn’t finish against the Spartans.

Against Wyoming, the Rams will have to capitalize. The seven pass plays of 20 yards or longer against San Jose State, need to turn into points against Wyoming if they happen. We saw a glimpse of what this offense can be, but now we need the players to show us that they can finish.

what will happen

It’s a rivalry game, so throw the expected out of the window. No one knows what will happen. The Rams know what this game means to the community after hearing from former head coach Sonny Lubick. This game is going to be a fight and will come down to the last minute. The Rams pull it out but it won’t be pretty.

Final Score: Colorado State 31, Wyoming 27

There must be a curse or something as just two times has a team been ranked No. 1 in our power poll has not done well the week after. This week was no exception when Air Force fell to Boise State, 19-13 after being crowned the best team.

Now, the top team is Boise State and they received every single first-place vote this week. There is other movement throughout but the order of finish is going a bit more to plan to what the preseason projections said. Sort of.

Clarity is happening

The Mountain West top to bottom is shaking out mostly for how we thought it would be. Boise State is leading the Mountain Division with San Diego State and Fresno State in the running for the West Division.

The overall records may not be great, especially for the Bulldogs and Aztecs, but they are the frontrunners are projected.

All signs point to UNLV making a bowl game this year and it would be the first time in almost a decade they’d go to the post season. San Jose State could win the league, and it is looking more and more likely that the conference could have seven teams go bowling. There are three teams with five victories and three with four. Fresno State is looking more like a bowl game but they are just 3-4 at the moment.

College Football Playoff expansion: What would the top 12 project to be if the new format was in place for 2022?

College Football Playoff Expansion Top 12 Projection, 2022 Version After Week 9

The College Football Playoff powers-that-be continue to hem and haw about the minutiae of how to make an expanded version happen, but it’s coming.

There’s too much money on the table to not figure this out for the 2024 season to take this thing to 12.

Again, the basics – 12 teams, top six ranked conference champions, six at large teams, top four conference champs get a bye, and – most likely – the first round will be played at the home parks of the higher seeds.

The full explanation is at the bottom of this, but what if the playoff was expanded for this season? Here’s how it would look at the moment, and as you can see, it’s not as easy as it might seem to get into the top 12.

Top Four Projected Seeds After Week 8 (top four conference champions)

1. Georgia (SEC): Sugar Bowl
2. Ohio State (Big Ten): Rose Bowl
3. Clemson (ACC): Orange Bowl
4. TCU (Big 12): Cotton Bowl

At-Large Seeds

12. Cincinnati (AAC Champion) at
5. Tennessee (SEC)

11. Wake Forest (ACC) at
6. Michigan (Big Ten)

10. USC (Pac-12) at
7. Alabama (SEC)

9. Oklahoma State (Big 12) at
8. Oregon (Pac-12 Champion)

Top  Five Teams That Would Be Left Out
UCLA (Pac-12), Penn State (Big Ten), Utah (Pac-12), Ole Miss (SEC), Syracuse (ACC)

[lawrence-related id=553490]

Here’s how it’s going to work (this is from the College Football Playoff):

1. The 12 teams will be the six conference champions ranked highest by the selection committee (no minimum ranking requirement), plus the six highest-ranked teams not included among the six highest-ranked conference champions.

2. The ranking of the teams will continue to be done by a selection committee whose size, composition, and method of selection will remain substantially unchanged.

3. The four highest-ranked conference champions will be seeded one through four and each will receive a first-round bye.

4. The other eight teams will play in the first round with the higher seeds hosting the lower seeds either on campus or at other sites designated by the higher-seeded institution (No. 12 at No. 5, No. 11 at No. 6, No. 10 at No. 7 and No. 9 at No. 8.

5. The model allows for first-round games to be played on either the second or third weekend in December in a way that best accommodates the format and the participating teams, with at least 12 days between the conference championship games and the first-round games. The Management Committee would make the final determination of the calendar.

6. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four quarterfinal games and two Playoff Semifinal games would be played in bowls on a rotating basis.

7. The national championship game will continue to be played at a neutral site.

8. Subject to reaching agreement with bowls, the four highest-ranked conference champions will be assigned to quarterfinals bowls on selection day in ranking order, and in consideration of current contract bowl relationships if those bowls are selected for the rotation. For example, if the Pac-12 champion were ranked #1, the Big Ten champion were ranked #3, and the Rose Bowl were a quarterfinal site, the Pac-12 champion would be assigned to the Rose Bowl and the Big Ten champion would be assigned elsewhere.

9. With the four highest-ranked champions assigned to quarterfinal games in bowls, the opponent from first-round game winners will be assigned by the selection committee based on the bracket.

10. The higher seeds would receive preferential placement in the Playoff Semifinal games.

2022 CFN College Football Schedule & Results

College Football Rankings: 1 To 131 After Week 8

College football rankings from CollegeFootballNews.com from 1 to 131 after Week 8

College Football News 2022 college football rankings after Week 8 for all 131 teams with results and who’s up next week.

After last week when Tennessee shook up the world with its win over Alabama and Michigan cemented itself as a top team with a dominant victory over Penn State, things settled in a bit.

Georgia and Michigan had the week off, Tennessee had a light scrimmage against UT Martin, and at least at the top, everything else went according to plan.

Oregon took care of home with its win over UCLA, Alabama crushed Mississippi State, and Clemson survived Syracuse – all of that caused a wee bit of shuffle at the top.

Oklahoma State beating Texas, LSU taking down Ole Miss, and TCU pushing past Kansas State were all a big deal, but South Carolina taking out Texas A&M and convincing wins by Oregon State (Colorado) and Texas Tech (West Virginia) caused a little bit of a shake up.

The big changes are coming soon as the season hits the finishing kick, and now the rankings start to skew more towards how good the teams are right now after changes and shifts – think Boise State – over early misfires.

Like last week, there’s a bit of forgiveness for teams that lost their starting quarterback – Minnesota, for example, doesn’t get punished too much for not having Tanner Morgan around.

As always, the college football rankings will change wildly on the fly.
