USC vs Notre Dame Game Preview

Why USC Will Win

It’s been a rough, rough run for USC.

Clay Helton was fired early on, the team hasn’t been able to settle into any sort of a groove, the Pac-12 title hopes are all but crushed, and everyone just wants to get to 2021 and the new era – whatever that is.

But the team has enjoyed two weeks off, and it’s had a strange way of rising up and adjusting its way to a win to follow every clunker of a loss – and it’s coming off a loss to Utah.

The crazy part is that the team isn’t playing all that poorly. The defensive pressure is starting to ramp up, the passing game continues to produce, and the offense is the best in the Pac-12 in total yards.

Talent-wise, it’s all there to matchup just fine with an Irish team that’s struggling with its consistency – at least with the ground game.

The Notre Dame offensive line isn’t good enough, the quarterback situation is in constant flux, and …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Notre Dame Will Win

The passing game should work.

Don’t get too comfortable no matter who’s in at quarterback – Jack Coan is probably going to get the early nod – but the production will be okay against a secondary that got hammered by Utah for over 300 yards a few weeks ago.

USC hasn’t cranked up the pass rush for the entire year – the sacks haven’t been flowing until the last two games.

Yeah, USC has alternated win-loss-win-loss from the start, but the wins have come against the mediocre – San Jose State, Washington State, Colorado – and the losses have come against the mediocre-to-better.

Utah is getting stronger, but the Trojans have yet to play anyone who’s all that great. Outside of the Utes, they haven’t dealt with anyone who’s a rock solid lock to go bowling.

Notre Dame’s win over Purdue looks a whole lot stronger now. It dealt with Wisconsin’s defense, Virginia Tech’s style, and it played okay in the loss to Cincinnati.

However …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can the Notre Dame offensive line produce?

No, USC’s defensive front hasn’t been good enough this year overall, but it came up with seven sacks in the last two games and 12 of the 24 tackles for loss on the year.

The Irish allow way too many plays behind the line, but against the Trojans, the defense will make up for the problems.

Don’t expect anything from the USC running game, but Kedon Slovis and the passing attack will keep on producing late.

Notre Dame will get the late takeaway it needs to survive.

BYU vs Washington State Game Preview

Why BYU Will Win

Forgetting everything else about this game – at least for a moment – BYU should be able to keep the passing game going to give another Pac-12 team a fight.

The Cougars lost to Boise State and Baylor over the last two weeks, but they started the year off with wins over Arizona, Utah, and Arizona State. Since then, the passing attack has improved – over 300 yards in three of the last four games – and Washington State’s offense has been just okay.

The wins have been there for the Pac-12 Cougars lately, but the attack hasn’t hit 400 yards in four o the last five games.

The BYU O will be a bit more balanced – it’s been able to hit 400 yard or more in each of the last four games.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Washington State Will Win

So …. anything interesting going on with Wazzu lately?

The Jake Dickert era starts just as the Cougars were starting to get going.

Takeaways have been a big part of the Washington State defense all season long – with two or more in every game but the win over Cal – and the offensive side has been more productive when it’s getting its chances.

The team is miserable in red zone offensive production overall, but now it’s scoring touchdowns instead of settling for field goals.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Washington State played great through the Nick-Rolovich-refused-to-get-vaccinated circus, and it should continue to be strong now that it’s over – at least for the players and the football team.

BYU gave the ball away four times in the loss to Boise State, and it struggle on third downs to keep the Baylor offense off the field last week. Expect a mix of those two things as Washington State gets past the last few weeks and keeps the production going.

Dickert isn’t going to mess with anything. Continuity will be the key, and he’ll make it happen.

Colorado vs Cal Game Preview

Why Colorado Will Win

Now that’s more like it.

The 34-0 win last week might have come against lowly Arizona, and the running game didn’t really work, but the offense was able to come up with one of its better games all year and the team looked and played like it got two weeks off – which it did.

Football is more fun when you score.

The Buffaloes have enough of a defense to get by against most teams. It’s great on third downs, it allowed fewer than 20 points per game, and the pass D is solid.

Enter Cal. The Bears are known for their defenses under head coach Justin Wilcox, but they’re not generating their down stops, they’re allowing way too many passing yards, and they don’t have the offense to pick up the slack.

However …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Cal Will Win

Colorado needs takeaways, and it’s probably not going to get them.

The two interceptions weren’t the reason why the Buffs beat Arizona by 34, but they certainly helped.

Those were just the fourth and fifth takeaways on the year for a defense that hadn’t come up with a pick since the opener against Northern Colorado.

Cal has a whole slew of issues, but turnover margin isn’t one of them.

The three giveaways against Washington were a killer, but they’ve spread out the other three turnovers across the other five games.

This won’t be any sort of a shootout. The team that makes the fewest mistakes will win this, so …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Cal will finally get a win over an FBS team.

There won’t be anything pretty about it.

There won’t be many big offensive plays, but the Cal offensive line will be okay, the Colorado offense will stall too often, and the Bears will own the time of possession battle well enough to get out alive.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Oregon vs UCLA Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Will the Ducks state to play like they’re supposed to?

They haven’t been all that great over the last three weeks, but they managed to win two of the three – getting by in a fight against Cal last Friday – and they’re the final hope for the Pac-12 in the College Football Playoff chase.

For all of the problems and the inconsistencies, the offense has managed to run for over 200 yards in each of the last two games and was decently balanced against the Bears to get by.

For all of the good things UCLA has done to get to five wins, the pass defense is last in the Pac-12 allowing 290 yards per game. Oregon QB Anthony Brown has been up-and-down and much maligned, but he’s coming off a 244-yard day hitting 71% of his passes against Cal.

Most importantly for this, he’s not going to make big mistakes – he has just one pick on the year.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why UCLA Will Win

UCLA’s running game continues to be fantastic.

The Oregon run defense might be a major strength, but few teams were able to keep pounding away and keep pushing. Arizona was able to give it a shot and ran for over 200 yards, and Ohio State and Cal averaged over four yards per carry, and now UCLA’s running game has to come in with an attitude.

Zach Charbonnet has rushed for over 100 yards in five of the last seven games and is coming off a season-high 131-yard day against Washington.

Even if he’s not tearing off big dashes, coming up with a few yards on first and second downs is enough  – the Oregon defense is lousy on third downs.

This isn’t your normal Chip Kelly offense that goes 1000 miles per hour. It will control the clock for stretches, and in this, controlling the game and making Oregon press matters.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not exactly going to look like a team that should get to the College Football Playoff and do some damage, but Oregon will push through in the second half after a fun back-and-forth fight in the first.

It’ll look like this is the game the Ducks were waiting for. The defense will show off the talent and athleticism to hold up against the run as the game goes on, and in a positive momentum sort of way, the offense will feed off of it.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Washington vs Arizona Game Preview

Why Washington Will Win

Arizona’s offense can’t find the right mix.

The defense isn’t all that great, but that’s not really the problem. The Wildcats can’t seem to stop giving the ball away with 12 turnovers in the last four games.

The quarterback situation hasn’t been settled – Jordan McCloud threw too many picks against Oregon, and Gunner Cruz isn’t generating anything down the field – and there isn’t enough of a running game to take the heat off.

Washington isn’t exactly burning it up offensively, but the pass defense hasn’t been solid allowing just four touchdown passes and coming up with four picks. But …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Arizona Will Win

Yeah, the Washington offense. It’s struggling.

It’s gotten to the is-what-it-is point, only getting past 350 yards in the win over Arkansas State and its miserable defense.

The passing game is struggling, the ground attack is worse, and Arizona has to take advantage of all of it to stay in the game into the fourth quarter.

This isn’t the type of Washington team that’s going to run away and hide with the game. There’s not going to be a giant explosion of early points from the passing game, there will be a few turnovers, and Arizona has to take advantage of all of it.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona played a Colorado team last week that should’ve been ripe for the picking.

There wasn’t any offense happening, the Wildcats were playing reasonably well in close games – to a point – and …

Colorado 34, Arizona 0.

Washington doesn’t have an offense, and it’s not going to roll easily, but it’ll methodically get just enough to overcome a good start from an Arizona offense that’s desperately looking for a little luck.

The Wildcat passing game won’t be able to come through in the second half against this UW secondary.

Georgia Tech vs Virginia Game Preview

Why Georgia Tech Will Win

Well look at who’s getting the passing game going.

The Yellow Jackets followed up a 359-yard day against Pitt with close to 300 yards through the air in the win over Duke. The running attack has the parts to use whenever needed – even if it’s only averaging 4.2 yards per carry – but as long as Jeff Sims can be accurate and not throw picks – not a given; more on that in a moment – the offense will be fine.

Can Virginia stop the run? It’s not even close.

The Cavalier D has allowed over 200 rushing yards in three of the last five games and over 200 passing yards in every game but the win over William & Mary to start the season.

Georgia Tech will move the ball however it wants to.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Virginia Will Win

Virginia will also move the ball however it wants to, and that will be through the air.

Brennan Armstrong has been a machine, throwing for way, way over 300 yards in every game but the win over Miami with 19 touchdown passes and just six picks.

He might not be accurate over the last month – he’s struggling to hit 60% over his last four games – but that shouldn’t matter. Georgia Tech has the least efficient pass defense in the ACC, getting cranked up over the last three games with Pitt’s Kenny Pickett and Duke’s Gunnar Holmberg bombing away.

Armstrong will get his yards, and so will Sims. However, the Georgia Tech quarterback will continue to throw interceptions after giving away two in each of his last two games.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Tech hasn’t been consistent, but it’s been fighting. It’s also in the midst of an every other week pattern – if you care about these things.

The Yellow Jackets have gone L-W-L-W-L-W, and now they get a Virginia Tech that’s on a three-game winning streak and deep in the mix for the Coastal title.

It won’t always be perfect on either side, but both offenses will produce with a whole lot of big plays – Virginia games are like that, except for last week in the 48-0 win over Duke.

It’ll be fun – again Virginia games are like that – with Armstrong and the Cavalier offense being a bit more consistent in the fourth quarter and the defense picking off Sims to help open things up.

NC State vs Miami Game Preview

Why NC State Will Win

The defense is doing a phenomenal job of generating stops to get off the field.

No. 1 in the nation at generating third down stops, the Wolfpack allowed 11-of-33 conversions over the last two games and they’re still giving up just 25% on the year.

Miami’s defense isn’t generating those stop on third downs, and it’s not coming up with enough big plays period. The offense needs any sort of help it can get without D’Eriq King around, and the other side just isn’t getting the job done.

On the flip side, NC State leads the ACC in total defense and comes up with the takeaways the Hurricane defense is supposed to.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Miami Will Win

The offense hasn’t been bad under Tyler Van Dyke.

He’s not King, and he only hit 44% of his passes with three picks against North Carolina, but he’s thrown for over 200 yards in each of his three starts and the team was in a position in each of the last two games to get wins.

No, the Hurricane defense hasn’t been good enough, but the plays in the backfield are there and any pressure should be enough for the secondary.

NC State is doing a lot of things right, but it’s not coming up with a whole lot of big plays down the field – last week’s win over Boston College aside.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Can Miami finally catch a break and be on the right side of a close game? Eventually, yes, but not against this NC State team.

The Wolfpack D is too strong, and the O is too good at consistently just keeping things moving, and three takeaways will be enough to open things up by the early fourth quarter.

Boston College vs Louisville Game Preview

Why Boston College Will Win

The Louisville offense has been outstanding over the last few games and it hasn’t mattered.

As good as the O has been, the D has screwed it all up in back-to-back losses against Wake Forest and Virginia – the pass defense wasn’t even close.

This might not be the same Boston College offense without Phil Jurkovec at quarterback, but the passing attack was just fine against Clemson and the offense overall has been able to move the chains. Throw in a defense that’s good on third downs and …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Louisville Will Win

No, the Boston College O didn’t go in the 33-7 loss against NC State.

Getting things going on the ground has been an issue over the last two games, and Dennis Grosel isn’t a sharp enough passer to make up for it.

Having to press, the mistakes are coming from the offense with five giveaways over the last two games after only turning it over four times in the four four outings.

The Louisville defense is the worst in the ACC and it doesn’t come up with takeaways, but this is the game to start doing it. It doesn’t hold firm in the red zone, and it doesn’t easily get off the field, but generating at least two takeaways is a must.

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It’s not exactly do-or-die time for both teams, but …

It sort of is for Louisville.

The 3-3 Cardinals still have at NC State, Clemson, and Kentucky still to deal with – they can’t afford a loss in a 50/50 game like this.

Boston College has an easier path to get to six wins and a bowl game, but it has to quickly pull out of the two-game slide.

In a fun, close game, the Louisville offense will be a bit sharper – and the team will play with a greater sense of urgency – even with the defense having a rough time putting the game away.

UMass vs Florida State Game Preview

Why UMass Will Win

The UMass running game is having its moments.

The team is rested after getting two weeks off following the win over UConn, running for 247 yards a few weeks after the O cranked up over 500 yards against Eastern Michigan.

It’s not like Florida State can take anyone lightly – it’s still smarting from the loss to Jacksonville State earlier in the year – but this is the breather between going to North Carolina and getting Clemson next week. The full and undivided attention probably won’t be there, but …

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Florida State Will Win

The Florida State running game has settled in.

It wasn’t good enough over the first part of the season, but it went for over 200 yards in each of the last three games with 247 against Syracuse and 238 against North Carolina in their first two wins of the season.

The Noles will run for at least 250 yards against the UMass defensive front. That all ties into the other big key for them over the last two weeks – they’re converting on third down conversions. That was a problem in the three losses after the fight with Notre Dame.

The UMass defense is the second-worst in the nation in third down stops.
